World's RAREST Muscle Car Ever Built - 1 of 1 Production - 1968 Camaro - Only Video Footage To Exist

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

The 1968 Camaro Z28 Convertible was a 1 off production car built for GM Executive Pete Estes. This car was pulled from the regular Camaro assembly line and converted to a Z28 to try and impress Pete Estes who controlled the purse strings for Chevy's racing program. The car was supposed to impress Pete to give the race guys the funds for their Trans-Am program. Apparently, it worked because the car survived and had been restored. Since the timing of this footage, the car has gone back underground. This might be the only actual footage of the car.

in 1968 and 69, I was working at a Chevy Dealer near my home, as a "Wash Boy / Car Porter". This was an after school job, that went full time in the Summer. I had saved all my money from that job, and in June of 1969, I placed an Order for a 1969 Camaro with 396ci, 375hp, Convertible, SS but also all of the RS Options like Hide Away Headlights and additional Gauges on the Console, called the Instrument Package. Color was "Hugger Orange" with Black Stripes, Black Top and Black Interior. The Salesman was laughing at me, saying things like "Dream On Wash Boy"... until I tossed Five Grand Cash on his desk... He nearly Crapped his Pants! The car came to a total of $4679.00 which was the most expensive Camaro they had sold there, and only like $600.00 less than a Corvette. A couple weeks later there was a problem, because they did not want to build this car as a 4-Speed Convertible... but the Owner of the Dealership stepped in, and told them it was for his Son, who had just come back from the War... a Couple weeks later the car showed up. Being the "Wash Boy"... I asked to have the afternoon off, to spend the next 6 hours Detailing the Car and giving it a Triple Undercoat on the sly... (only paid them for One Coat.) About a half hour before closing, I was about to drive the car up front, and lock up the bays. All of the other kids that worked there were Amazed by this car, and all day kept saying things like... "Wonder Who got This Car." I never told them... until I was driving it our the back door. Just before I did a Screaming Burn Out, I yelled... This Baby is Mine!! ... Save Your Money! ... That was a Very Good Day... :>)

I am from Southwestern Ohio and grew up there. I went to Cincinnati Technical College, which I studied automotive service management. In 1987 we had a class trip to the Norwood plant about a year before they closed the plant. Sadly, I hate to say it, but the employees at the time had themselves partly to blame for the closing of the plant. They had up to 40 percent absenteeism on a daily basis and there was a lot of drug dealing and drug abuse in the plant. When we took a tour of the factory I could plainly see the poor quality control there that was going on. I had several people over the years tell me if you wanted a decently built Camaro or Firebird that you had to get one that was built at the Van Nuys factory. That's exactly why that plant wasn't shut down for at least a year or two later and production was transferred to Ontario Canada. It was truly sad because it about ruined the economy of Norwood Ohio after it was shut down.

Sorry to disagree but it was ordered through the COPO process and was built as a Z on the assembly line. That makes it as much a production car any COPO (not just the Camaros). The special options that were available with Zs but had to be installed by the customer (the cross ram, headers etc) were installed in the engineering center. Unlike the BOSS 429 it was not sent out to another company to be built.

Absolutely brilliant. It was their loss to not jump on such an opportunity. I'm looking forward to seeing all 14 of them. It's just something you can't see anywhere else. I can't say I'm a fan of Mecum or Barret-Jackson. They pulled the money men into muscle cars intentionally. 85% of them don't even look at the cars, they have a buyer pick them based on potential ROI and it's put into storage. That's their job, get more money for the cars. I'm sour because I was stuck rebuilding Chevelle's starting with one good wiper blade and building a car around it lol.

@@xminusone1 I'm with you, they used to be dirt cheap. A high school kids hero car reaches max value when he is between 45 and 55. The nature of life allows the value to decline after that. Model A's, tri 5 Chevys, 60s muscle cars in general have greatly declined in value with things like model A or roadsters declining the most due to age of the fans. There's something of a hard deck they don't really fall through. Even what they call square body 73-87 Chevy trucks had the bottom drop out. The key is to live forever. Be around long enough to see the bottom drop out ha ha.

Very interesting and well done video! Brings back memories of a good friend I had for many years out in California who purchased and sold a 1964 Ford Galaxy 500 XL Fastback with a 427 engine. What was unique about this vehicle was that it was ordered with only one Holly four barrel carb rather then the two that was common. Turns out it was one of only twelve that were produced in model year 1964! I saw a Hot Rod magazine with a picture on the front cover of one and stating that if you had one of these in the 1980’s it was worth around 85k! He paid $3500. lol

Another thing that I thought was a little odd, was the fact that the interior was white. I had always thought that the interior was supposed to be the same color as the top. And the number of options on this car, was just incredible. That Pete Estes was 1 lucky guy. Thanks for the video, I really enjoyed it.

  • @maddpeanut6313

    3 жыл бұрын

COPO was not a production division. It was a paperwork mill that was used to specify configurations not available through the RPO process and included everything from taxis to ZL1s. The car was built as a Z on the assembly line. Special optional parts available with any Z but customer or dealer installed (cross ram, headers and such) were installed by Chevrolet engineering because there was no dealer.

COPO: Central Office PRODUCTION Order If it was a COPO car, ordered through the COPO program, with COPO paperwork, then technically it would be a production car. If Estes didn't go through the official order program with official paperwork, then no, it's not production. The difference is whether or not anyone else could order a car this way, regardless of whether or not anyone else did or not.

The reason no Z28 convertibles….. without the roof as structure, the unibody could not take the twist. My 69 Z and most others have small cracks in the corner of the 1/4 window sheet metal, (not only Z28s but also other high HP Camaro). They can twist so bad that when you shift at about 7000rpm the shifter can neutral lock until the body untwists.

I too owned a 68 Z28 back in the 70's. Hardtop, but still one awesome car back in those days. Sold it and bought a corvette, then years later wished I would have kept the Camaro. But that's how things were back in those days.

I lived in Port Arthur Texas , and there was a Red 67 or 68 Camaro 396 4speed . Badged as SS 396 with white nose strip . It had the 69 hood it had 2-4 carbs with offset Offenhauser intake function hood . But the badge on the fenders was Rat 396 and on the gas lid . The inside was red with the same as the corvette dash and console. It had the rally sport head lights . Rear and front spoilers. It had the solid tail lights with separate backup lights . I’ve never seen another one ever ! The owners name was McCloud . He also had a black 67 GTO , we used watch him street race .

I’m sorry but they built this one off car specifically for that gentleman, it’s not a production car nor is it a prototype because there was no plan to build more, it’s a one off special edition! It’s still super rare but it was never a production car!

@@sergeantmasson3669 YOU ARE WRONG. COPO is not a division, it's an ordering mechanism for configurations (including paint jobs) not available under the RPO system. The car was built as a Z on the assembly line. They said the "special Trans Am parts" (cross ram, headers etc) were added by engineering. Those parts were available to any Z buyer but NEVER installed by the factory rather by the dealer or customer. COPO = Central Office PRODUCTION Order

1 of my business partners showed me the 1 of 1 68 Camaro in a magazine of high end cars while he was looking for something completely different back around 2000 +/-. I called to see about looking/buying it and the guy told me the story of the GM having it built his way etc. I asked how much, he said "if you have to ask, it's to much" I went on to buy a very nice 69 RS/Z28. Very cool story!!

My 90 year old mother has a friend at her retirement home who swears her late husband special ordered an early 60's Corvette convertible with every available option including "Woody" side panels and white wall tires. I told her that if that were true, it would be the rarest Corvette of all time because I couldn't imagine anyone in their right mind wanting such a thing!

The *woody Corvette* was only available on the 1956 model, with no orders, so they dropped that option. On the other hand, the *rumble seat* was the most popular option on 1957 with 75% of all 57 Vette's having a rumble seat. The *first split back window* Vette (1963) included the *split ass-cheek seats* on all orders with the Rochester FI 360hp engine to keep your ass planted to the seat as you blasted off at every stop light. Your ass cheeks would *pucker up* as you smashed the accelerator down to the ground. They only came in black leather so you could wipe the sh!t off easily 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

@@paulmahon1613 Oh! I definitely agree! 1.) My 91 year old mother retold this story that another widow of extreme age at the nursing home told her about her late husband's "Special Car" that he would not allow anyone else to touch or drive. Evidently he was quite the narcissist and abusive toward the entire family. Part of the story is that when the husband, father died, the wife and kids could not wait to get rid of dad's "Pride and Joy" and disposed of it quickly, as it was associated with too many bad memories for any of them to keep it. 2.) I don't care how you word the Google search, you're not going to find a Corvette of ANY vintage with "woody" trim anywhere. They just don't exist. I'll admit that a '56 or '57 might look striking with its 'parabola' in woody trim in place of the usual two-tone. But I can't even imagine anyone back then ordering one that way: it never made any sense and I see no record of Chevrolet ever offering that option on a 'Vette of any vintage. 3.) Understand that the information was relayed thru 2 women whose interest in things automotive is near zero, the kind of person who describes a car by telling you what color it is because they all look alike in their eyes. If the woody existed, I doubt it was a Corvette.

It was the NEW "space-age" seat". Chevrolet discontinued that option (wasn't available in '68) due to personal injuries 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

When we were teenagers getting cars in early 70s, reasonable peiced back then, alot of them around even in smal northern towns, before salt days, cameros and mustangs everywhere and we ran around with lake kids and a boy had a 67 convertible. He was a show off and would sit on top of short bucket seat, little short shifter on his 4 speed, and romp on it shifting trying to make front end cone up. One day going around a lake curve with 6 teens in it ,he had just put top up looked like rain, went around a curve with lake close and water was coming across road, he lost control and went over bank on lake side and landed on its top! All 6 kids managed to get out unharmed, shaken but unhurt. Car was towed to local junkyard, we got it out and brung it to my house towing it, lots of seaweed and junk all over it, told him dont turn it over, hard telling whats laying in carb, so he did! And it sucked stuff in motor. After home we looked and car was unharmed, a small dent in front fender that popped out, just got the top, and bent window posts. Found a donor car and bought the top, we put top on, pushed window posts out until top locked in. While working on car as teen i didnt know Cameros like i did later in years. But remember it had only a tach and speedometer on dash. No gauges, and under the Tach/Speed it daid RS/SS Experimental. 67 rag top. Was told later on that was a rare track car GM built first production to test out the cars. Then sold off and were only a hand full of them made. Dont know if ot had a 327 in it but it jad like LT-1 Camero valve covers and was a strong running engine, woth mid range gears. 4 speed muncie. Typical cragar mags and wide tires. Thinking what it would be worth today or what happened to it! Kid was hard on cars and had somethibg different all the time . Was a city kid. They never kept anything. I asked about it and he said he was working on it. Few years later he quit coming to lake area, lost track. Thinking that was a rare car.
