@LegalEagle (Most) modern diesel engines don't have a throttle the way that gasoline engines do. They "throttle" by first adding fuel, and then the added combustion energy spools the turbo, adding supporting airflow to increase engine power output. It is desirable for many diesel owners to have their engine control system tuned by aftermarket providers to increase power, throttle response, and even to improve fuel economy. Obviously, this can be taken to the extreme, and a few dopes will have ruined this (aftermarket tuning) for the rest of us (like always). Generally, a small "puff" of smoke is indicative of turbo lag. The sustained output of black smoke when "rolling coal" is a deliberate act and potentially damaging to the engine.

Having ALLEGEDLY owned a radar detector in my youth, I can attest to the fact that anything on the cheaper end of the spectrum will in fact detect radar and sometimes even LiDAR but will also detect toll booths, cars and trucks with side detection or adaptive cruise control, and automatic doors on the front entrance of buildings.

Detectors are usually not illegal for one, for two your youth must have been fairly recently because adaptive cruise and side collision detection is a fairly new feature on cars (I'm onto you). And lastly, cheap radar detectors will detect an automatic door from a mile away easily. It's the ability to know it's not a threat, and filter it out, that you pay for. - Someone who owned radar detectors in their youth, and in their not youth... Yesterday I owned one even. Today is still in question though, things are expensive and the V1 could be stolen when I get into my car... Could happen!

And it's one of the safest drugs there is, assuming that you use proper inhalation techniques and don't forget to breathe oxygen in between does. Should you decide to try nitrous, please don't use the automotive grade stuff, since it has other additives in it that *are* in fact hazardous to your health. Buy the food grade stuff that's meant for refilling whipped cream canisters. Your local smokeshop usually sells them.

I find that the US tends to have obvious corruption, especially at the state and local level. This is in contrast to other countries, who are much better at not mentioning their corruption, because they always show a united front to outsiders.

17:52 those are known as "Czech hedgehogs" and are a tank traps. These are static barricades meant to stop vehicles including.... tanks. Caltrops are specifically meant to be portable and have a point sticking up to pierce a tire, foot, hoof, etc.

Growing up as a girl in the 90s in a rural area with a TON of long and desolate stretches of roadway, one of the first things I learned about the police is that you never, EVER pull over for an officer at night. You call dispatch and tell them to inform the officer that you will not pull over until you can reach a gas station or someplace well-lit and relatively populated. Because you don't know if those flashing lights belong to an actual officer or some rando with strobe lights.

Spies enter foreign nations secretly or under false pretenses in order to either gain access to information they are not authorized to have or to exert covert influence over a political situation in a way that benefits the interests of the state-sponsor. A "license to kill" is just their way of saying the UK will overlook all the crimes that benefit them. However, the country they commit those crimes in are probably not going to overlook those crimes, so, yeah, Bond's still breaking the law for a living.

Always wondered about the legality of the 00 status… does it only apply in Commonwealth nations, or is it a UN recognized thing.

The part about imitating a police officer really hit hard. In Nova Scotia recently, we had a gunman go on a spree of violence in a mock police cruiser wearing a mock police uniform. The imitation was nearly perfect. Got a lot of it from police surplus auctions (though most of the guns were smuggled from the US) and now its illegal for police to auction off their decommissioned equipment.

Usually from what ive seen. There isn't any "switch" for rolling coal. They just have their fuel maps dump a stupid amount of excess fuel into the engine at the top of the rev range and that smoke is umburnt fuel. Dumb for alot of reasons. But a huge waste of diesel is a major one.

@@sophierobinson2738 Probably, depending on speed. For combustion you need fuel and oxygen. If you were going too fast, the fuel concentration may be too low for ignition. At low speed it should ignite if you used a flamethrower. You would probably damage your car more than theirs as you could create a large fireball that you are driving into. Not good.

A plate cover could be useful for people at car shows or posting photos to social media. It would reduce the sharing of your plate numbers to random strangers.

@@finthegeek you can use plates to find the registered owner of a vehicle through the department of licensing here in the US. Then people have the owners address and other personal info which high end car thiefs do use for tracking down valuable cars, same with housebreaking.

We had a problem at one point of a person impersonating a cop. Cops told us we could call 911 before pulling over and verify it was an actual police officer behind us.

Just so your aware the image at 16:48 during the nitrous talk is a dry sump oil tank or possibly a coolant tank. Nitrous would be in a “fire extinguisher” style tank due to the amount of pressure it is under. Love the videos! Keep up the great work!!!

Radar detectors: I heard a story 20 years ago of a governor who would carry a radar gun on state business trips in the helicopter. When over the expressway, the radar gun was aimed down below. The cars that had radar detectors emitted an alert that cause multiple brake lights flashing as drivers reduced their speed to the limit.

@@cirlu_bd Unfortunately that's not how it typically works in the real world. Most highways the unofficial speed is around 5 mph over the limit - though I know a couple where it's as high as 20 mph over the official limit. (And I've gone past cops with speed guns on that road at that speed without getting a ticket.) But that's not even really relevant - what is relevant is that when people know there's a speed check they tend to slow down. Note that I didn't put a 'to below the speed limit' there - they just slow down, regardless of what their speed was, what the speed limit is, etc. Sometimes this is a good thing and what you want. Generally slower traffic is safer, after all. But just doing it randomly can cause accidents or traffic snarlups.

Roads are often built inappropriately for the posted speed limit. Usually they're far too wide. Speed trap towns are common along highways, where the same road you were driving 75 on suddenly has a speed limit of 40 as you drive through the town. If we designed our roads better, we wouldn't need to rely on traffic cops and radars to keep the desired speed.

For the record, sir Eagle, the KTO Rosomak is not in fact Polish, but Finnish. It is a Patria AMV 8x8 (also known as XA-360) manufactured under license in Poland.

18:53 It's actually legal in Missouri and a few other states for wreckers to have red and blue flashing lights on the truck. In MO they classify wreckers as emergency vehicles and allow them to run with lights and sirens to police tow calls but only if requested by the police.

Pennsylvania, firefighters are permitted blue lights without sirens. Location and type are at owners’ discretion, interior lights were illegal until about five years ago. Many other states permit firefighters to have reds and a siren (myself included). That said, there is wicked penalties for using them when not on a call or on scene at an emergency, and for the love of god, don’t initiate traffic stops. Highway patrol will gladly have your vehicle crushed into a cube.

Blue lights are found on snowplows and a few other road maintenace vehicles in MN. It's most common on state vehicles, but some county and local plows and such have them, too. Not private plows, though

I am shocked, SHOCKED I tell you, to hear that the people in the Fast and Furious movies who were engaging in illegal drag racing, were actually BREAKING THE LAW by using nitrous oxide!

That was my thought too, especially on a super car or something exotic that a lot of people would take pictures of. If youre not obstructing your plate while driving on public roads, its just a plate holder The actual legal basis for it being "illegal" is usually state VTL regulations, and it would generally be an equipment violation (e.g. registration plate display regulations) and that would be a fix it ticket or a small fine, I'd be hard pressed to see criminal charges come from it

Just remembered: in the 90's during one case of radar jamming (and bricking) it was discovered that the 'culprit' didn't know that the decommissioned fighter-jet he was transporting to a museum still had its SAM Detection and Neutralization system installed (let alone that it was self-activating, which *was* a good thing for its intended purpose) … he did wonder why it tried to fire a, thankfully not mounted (for legal reasons), Shrike.

So he's just towing it down the street when all of a sudden the cockpit comes to life with the "MISSILE LOCK DETECTED" tone and the ECM on it was still present enough to zap back some kind of jamming signal powerful enough to damage the police radar system? Huh, I thought that kind of electronic countermeasures stuff was typically classified electronics that got ripped out along with the actual weapons. Somebody would probably be in trouble for even letting the museum people HAVE that. Still a funny story to hear about, though. Also, maybe the guy shouldn't carry the still-partially-working fighter jet around with the batteries connected, I guess.

In Co, radar detectors won't get you in trouble... but I know a number of people that had their car towed by cops for various reasons; just to find the radars were "missing" by the time they made it to the lot... I'm sure a jammer is illegal. (i got a radar detector at 18, and it actually helped me break my speeding habits... instead of using it to speed any time it was not active, I was constantly reminded to check my speed when I saw it.)

There was a case in Europe where the guy used signal jammer so his kids couldn't use phones during a night time. He obviously got into a lot of trouble because jammer blocked the signal in a large area.

Well, common sense isn't as common as we might wish. A lot of people don't understand the difference between ownership and use. Same way right now there's a huge issue with people not understanding that private social media companies do not have to abide by the first amendment. They have a very basic understanding of the law and think that it just universally applies instead of the incredibly nuanced (often to the point of absurdity) reality.

Got the bottoms right but a pipe with a valve can be used for other things other than your exhaust making it not really illegal I don't think it's the way you use it is illegal if I'm not mistaken I could be wrong and if I am wrong then the plumbing industry probably is in a mess and your faucet on the side of your house is illegal too if this is the case

That was horrendous. It’s awful that he managed to get so far, especially when everybody already knew how iffy the guy was. So scary. Impersonating a police officer is a serial killer move if ever I saw one.

The fake cops coming up to your window are why you need the driver’s side flamethrower.

In relation to firearms, keep an eye out for the word "loaded" as it is often the key word in many of these laws. In many states the difference between legal, and illiegal is as simple as: is the firearm loaded or unloaded, assembled/disaassembled, visible/not visible to others, or accessable/inaccessable to the occupants. What is even more confusing is that some states require the opposite of other states. Sort of like how some states make it illegal to conceal carry a firearm, presumably so that with everyone open carying, other people can see who has a weapon and anyone attempting to hide weapon can be assumed dangerous and authorities alerted. Other states might make it illegal to open carry to prevent people from being triggered by a past trauma just because you're carying a weapon.

actually, it's illegal to pass laws that restrict someone's ability to carry firearms in the US. It's also illegal for police to assume a firearm in a vehicle is loaded, or to perform a search without just cause to determine whether it is loaded or not. In other words, you cannot break the law to prove someone is breaking the law

Where I live, which isn't in the US, there's a law protecting citizens against people impersonating the police. If you're driving in an area with very little traffic and/or other potential witnesses, e.g. in the countryside, you can legally refuse to pull over if the police officer (or impersonator) is driving an unmarked vehicle. You are however obligated by law to seek a safe place to pull over, e.g. at a gas station, as soon as possible. You can't get in legal trouble for refusing to pull over in such cases. However, this doesn't give you immunity against any other infractions or crimes you may be committing while driving. It's even part of law enforcement policy to not bother pulling over people for simple infractions, i.e. anything that wouldn't make you go to jail, if the officer is driving an unmarked vehicle. This means that if you later complain to the police, there's a chance the officer in question will get reprimanded. You may even call 911 while being tailed by an unmarked vehicle ordering you to pull over in the middle of nowhere. They'll be able to contact the police and verify if the person tailing you is really a member of law enforcement. If it turns out to be an impersonator, they'll send real police officers after the impersonator. They might even direct you to lead the impersonator into an ambush.

@@fawazgerhard2742 he didn’t make it up. The UK police advise that if you are in doubt, signal to the “officer” that you acknowledge them, but drive to a safe place before stopping. You can also call 999 and ask if it is genuine (you decide whether you want to do that whilst driving or not). A genuine officer will appreciate the optics of the stop and accommodate the caution. Or they will wait until you are in a more clearly lit and safe area before signalling to stop. There are exceptions, such as dangerous or drunk driving where it may be imperative to stop straight away, and the police will factor that into their decision and how to do it.

One legal/illegal modification you didn't cover: high powered, LED headlights bulbs. They are sold at every auto parts store alongside other headlight bulbs. The warning they are too bright for roads and only to be used off road is in tiny print. I see cars with overly bright headlights from time to time and wonder if these people were unaware they installed the wrong bulbs or deliberately flouted the law.

No one gets stopped for them. If you're using an LED light bar mounted on your roof, on the street, that's different. And if they're color changing or you're driving with red or green or other color headlights, that's illegal

@@SpartacusLegends117 It is enforceable. Police choose not to do it most of the time. It is just like the tint, they need a tool to read it and the first offense is usually just a fixit ticket so they don't bother. That being said, if you are in an accident and the other person says you blinded them, absolutely expect them to check your headlights.

I guarantee that asthma is far more common than "eggshell skull" so a battery charge for rolling coal would be pretty hard to defend against. The sad part is that you get away with it every time. Nobody's going to catch the license plate for rolling coal, and at least in my area I've seen them do it right in front of police vehicles, they don't care.

I looked into Rolling Coal laws and the states with the strongest penalties tend to be the ones colored red on Election Day, and CARB states of course. Texas has some fierce fines. But Greg Abbott removed the funding for the reporting hotline as soon as he took office, because of course he did. But, if you piss off a cop, they can ruin your day, week, and month. Thousand dollar fines and your vehicle is no longer road legal until you have the system removed and the vehicle inspected to ensure it is back in factory condition. One of the ways that Texas makes up for personal income tax is fines, fees, and such.

Speaking of licence curtains, I've seen plates modified to illuminate the letters and numbers when you switch the headlights on. The numbers and letters are made of translucent plastic and have soft white light. The fonts are also not standard. The problem is that at night, it has the paradoxical effect of making the licence plate more difficult to read from a distance compared to standard plates.

Honestly, the rolling coal thing being battery against cyclists should be far more prosecuted. In the US and Canada, drivers seemingly always become just irrationally aggressive when they see a cyclist for no good reason.

I’m only angry at cyclists because 9/10 times in my area they drive on the road, and not off to the side of the road. Now I’m not clinically insane and would never endanger cyclists. But the reality is that if you are on a road and riding a bicycle, you better be off the road itself. Or at least across the fog line. The city I live in is rural, there are no bicycle lanes, and for some bizarre reason the city bans bicycles on sidewalks (even though there is 0 pedestrian traffic). So what happens is bicyclists ride on the main roads, never at the speed limit because obviously they can’t, and then traffic has to pass them.

@@sorenkazaren4659 It's really a safety thing that cyclists ride in the center of the lane because it ensures that they're seen by other drivers and makes sure that they have the space to safely ride. If a cyclist is riding on the edge of a road, especially in a more rural environment where shoulders aren't common, one mistake from a driver or the cyclist can force them off the road.

I think he could get a ticket for recklessness. Like, if you modify your tires in such a way that they give you less grip it is considered illegal in many places. In Denmark(where I live) you can get a ticket of the equivalent of 140$ if your tires are too worn.

@@namebrandmason I live on an unofficial main route alternate. Three doors down we have a stop sign and the T-intersection it regulates has a pull out on the top. The noise from speeders (45+ in a densely residential 25 zone), straight pipes taking off from the signs and idiots doing donuts is appalling. We're used to it but guests have a hell of a time.

@@namebrandmason My city just installed a noise camera to go after loud cars downtown. I'm not a fan of "big brother is watching you" camera systems, but it's all the city can do because the cops are utterly corrupt and will just ignore noise violations and "rolling coal".

I'd love to hear from LegalEagle about semitransparent license plate covers. He apparently lives in DC areas (as I do), so he must see them a lot, especially on VA cars. For those who don't know, this is a permanent cover made of transparent plastic, and people claim it is is to protect the plate from fading or damage (clearly BS). The plastic is tinted which makes reading the plate much harder. The outer surface is also usually convex, and I suspect the only reason for that is to create a reflection to obscure the tag when a speed camera flashes its light. How can these be legal? Or ar they illegal but the law is never enforced?

This video is coming on the heels of the second anniversary of Canada's deadliest mass shooting, which was done by a man pretending to be an RCMP officer, right down to a mocked up car and uniform. So the bit with the fake lights and sirens being so easy to get... is more than a bit terrifying. Not that there's any point in trying to ban the sales of such things; the exact same skills and items I used to put lights and sounds in my R2-D2 recreation I could use to make fake cherries and a siren; the kit is saving me maybe a day's work? But it makes me sad that someone out there decided it's a good idea to sell a thing that makes us all so much less safe.

The thing is, a lot of states allow non-state emergency vehicles, like tow trucks or utility vehicles, to use flashing red, or blue lights, provided they're either mixed with yellow, or just the one color. And that's what these are manufactured for. But, it's a shame they're sold to anyone, anywhere without having a way to know that the person buying has a legitimate reason for them.

There's no Province that allows red-and-blue or white-and-blue on anything other than a peace officer's vehicle, and very few that allow blue by itself or mixed with amber. Red-and-white is usually an ambulance or a fire truck. Private vehicles, be they security, tow-trucks, construction, or what have you, usually use amber, though apparently funeral vehicles have begun using purple. School buses use white strobes.

@@davydatwood3158 Here in Ontario we use blue-only for the snow plow. As to the murder spree you've mentioned... I don't think the fake lights made the real difference. Among the many, many other failings was the problem that the gunman got his hands on proper police decals for the vehicle. Without that, having flashing lights would have just been a way to draw attention and get caught.

Take a page from the books of various navies of the era of the Washington and London naval treaties: The magic phrase is "fitted FOR but not fitted WITH." For example: take the County class heavy cruisers of the royal navy. To meet the maximum 10'000 ton limit, they had no belt armour. But you would notice them riding suspicously high in the water. After the treaties were dispensed with, they recieved an armoured belt and suddenly rode at about the right height in the water. Make of that what you will... Or the japanes Mogami class "light" cruisers. They had turrets with 6" guns but by pure coincidence, the IJN had some 8" gun turrets laying around in a warehouse that would - again by pure coincident - end up replacing the 6" turrets on the Mogamis... You could try something similar with your car to prep for the inevitable zombie apocalypse...

As a South African. Yea... I remember the the anti hijacking flamethrower. It was very well-known but is and has always been VERY illegal to install.... But some people still did it. Crime is a serious problem here... From the criminals to the people who break the law thinking/trying to protect themselves.

@11:00 the exhaust cutouts are tricky, it's not that it's illegal to have that valve installed, it's just illegal to use a valve to dump exhaust gasses without it passing through the vehicles emissions devices, like a catalytic converter and muffler, you can use these if and only if the exhaust also passes through a catalytic converter and muffler, for example my old truck had one of these valves but it simply rerouted the exhaust through a second aftermarket muffler that allowed me to make it loud or quiet at a flick of a switch while still being legal

If it showed up in court, it would probably come down to intended purpose. If you owned something that was obviously a caltrop or tire spike, that's illegal, but if it was a metal D4 of a reasonable size that happened to resemble a caltrop, I doubt anyone would bother taking you to court unless you actually tried to use it like one.

I've cooled a little bit on my opinion regarding drivers of needlessly large trucks. Everyone has their tastes and passions, and apart from consuming more than one's reasonable share of energy, big trucks are fairly innocuous. But coal rollers can absolutely drive themselves into a lake.

My biggest problem with them is the danger they pose to pedestrians. Getting struck by a higher sitting vehicle is more likely to send you under the tires rather than over the hood. No one intentionally hits someone but the more trucks on the road the more opportunity for accidents to happen. Not saying someone shouldn't get a vehicle they like because of that fact, but they're not entirely innocuous.

Parking lots and a not insignificant number of roads aren't built well for them, which isn't exactly their fault, but they are highly inconsiderate of how to treat a vehicle in those spaces which causes problems for everyone. Pulling too far forward at an intersection where someone trying to turn in the other lane can't see to turn or whatever. Not staying in their lane in traffic (just going straight...or otherwise). And parking. I can't count the places I went just this week where lots were overflowing, but still had suv's parked over lines and crooked, not pulled up far enough and causing potential problems especially if people are speeding down an aisle... I counted 20 unusable spots (and gave up) for exactly this reason in one lot yesterday. I keep bringing up the idea similar to compact car parking spots, maybe some SUV or otherwise 'oversized' vehicle spots. But people don't bother to make basic infrastructure improvements anymore. You have to fight hard just for bike lanes now.

There's a difference between a "big truck" like an F250/F350 or Silverado HD2500/HD3500.....and an F150 or Silverado 1500 with a 6" lift and 35s with spacers.... Most of the people with the lift kits and bigger tires will never actually make use of the additional capability. Most don't even seem to understand that their vehicle is actually less safe that way. I've had a bunch of them complain about brakes wearing out too fast because the brake system was completely ignored and now has to stop all that additional weight. At the same time, most of those vehicles don't track properly and they suffer from reduced visibility. (Sure, they're easier for everyone else to see, but they can't see nearly as much as they could with the vehicle stock) Those trucks are a danger to everyone in a car.

I've been mentally compiling stats on bad drivers in my state and found that roughly 75-80% of the time when someone does something really stupid on the road, it's a pickup truck or SUV. Most of the rest are sports cars, of course. When a sedan or coup does something stupid, I usually exclaim out loud about it because it's so uncommon. Now, most people say that the reason people in big vehicles are bad drivers is that the big vehicles are harder to control and see out of. This is not true. It's _easier_ to see from a pickup or SUV due to the high position and the large mirrors (at least, if the mirrors are adjusted correctly). Control only becomes an issue if the person is speeding. The _real_ reason large vehicle drivers are terrible is that you have to be stupid to buy a large vehicle. Think about it: unless you work construction or on a farm, how often do you use the bed of your pickup? Once, maybe twice a year, if that? The people I know with trucks don't even use them that much. Since a truck costs at least $10,000 (usually $20,000) more than a car with comparable capacity outside the bed, that means you're spending that much, as well as double the fuel costs, in order to be asked to help everyone you know move. As for SUVs: they're minivans with higher ground clearance and a longer front end, but cost thousands more and frequently have even less horsepower. That's pretty stupid unless you need it to go off-road, but many "SUVs" don't actually have any greater ground clearance than a minivan or car. If it's a "crossover" type, it definitely does _not._ And again, how often do most SUV drivers go off-road? Even less than pickup owners use their truck beds. As for towing, a minivan can tow as well or better than any SUV and most trucks. Only a "super duty" truck has more horsepower. The same was true of station wagons back when they existed.

At one time, one used to have to demonstrate that one was either law enforcement, a firefighter or an EMT in order to buy appropriate lights for personal vehicles. For mail orders (it was that long ago) one would often be required to buy them through ones department/service. In person purchasing might require a long drive, and you would still need to show credentials.

But what if you had a plate flipper with three copies of the same plate on it? "I just couldn't decide which background I liked, so I went with all three!"

I think an important distinction about exhaust cutouts: most people install them after the catalytic converter, but before the muffler. This does not violate any emission control laws. Cutouts are still explicitly illegal in some states, or the resulting decibel level of the exhaust may violate noise pollution laws. Still completely legal in many states though.

@@watsonwrote hp/torque increase, better exhaust flow, less acceleration lag from the pedal ect ect sounds nice also helps you listen to the transmission shifting in case of any issues with that, helps determine if you have a misfire ect. Very useful stuff. Here's another fact for ya.. did you know you could do your on vehicle maintenance yourself without paying out the ass for a mechanic 😮😂

if someones truck shot plumes of smoke at another person and they had an asthma attack requiring hospitalization, could they sue for their medical bills

How about carbon monoxide poisoning.

Reflective jammers have been scams since the 90s. Even active jammers are difficult to be effective with modern radar guns. Good luck jamming LIDAR which I'm sure just about everyone uses now.

Laser/LIDAR jammers exist and can be VERY effective ( in states where such devices are still legal...) ;)

Actually I'd argue jamming LIDAR is easier and legally less troublesome than jamming RADAR (from an FCC standpoint). All these speed guns use IR lasers with comparatively low polling rates. Having an IR detectors in a car should be a non issue (und be dirt cheap) and some well placed IR LEDs with a little bit of flicker trickery should be enough to mess with the delicate AGC and timing circuit of the LIDAR gun. Yes, the gun will probably report the tampering and you will be pulled over. And yes the officers will probably be very mad. And yes getting a lawyer to get you out of trouble is probably way more expensive than paying the ticket in the first place. But I'd argue it is very much possible to prevent a LIDAR measurement of your speed (that would hold up in court). Then again some states probably already have legislation outlawing "tampering with speed limit enforcement" so it doesn't really matter what technique is used to measure/jam anyways.

The scam related to passive devices is true. Lots of these bogus wire wrapped florescent tunes were sold through word of dumb asses in the 90's. The guy I watched make them just cackled everytime he sold one.

No FCC laws governing infrared light 😂 Seriously, if someone pushed it far enough in court, I don't believe the federal law would back it up on the national level on interference grounds...you'd probably have to have a state law in place to cover it
