World’s Most Dangerous Roads | Eastern Europe: The Adriatic Highway (2010)
World’s Most Dangerous Roads - Mali: • World’s Most Dangerous...
The “Adriatic Highway” is one of the most beautiful coastal roads in the world. The “technical masterwork” was built in the 1950s and 60s, at the time of Yugoslavian President Tito. Abounding in curves, the asphalt road stretches from Ankaran in Slovenia to Ulcinj in Montenegro. More than half of the road is in Croatia (659 km) and a quarter in Montenegro (125 km). Shorter segments lead through Slovenia; only nine kilometers are in Bosnia and Herzegovina. For all four countries of the former Yugoslavian Federation, the 1,200-kilometer-long highway remains the main thoroughfare of Adriatic tourism.

I've been around a number of times even relatively early after getting my DL. These Adriatic roads are indeed beautiful but nothing out of ordinary. What elevates the factor of danger is the heat in Summer comined with travelling crowds in prime time and relative lack of space to overtake on relatively narrow, crooked roads. Lets he honest, most of the locals drive "Balcan style" (hi-speed, brake-throttle, phones, no seat belts, lot of horn usage) while tourists usually do not know well the topography of the roads and may be prone to "sightseeing" way too much from the window. Such road profile is typical in pretty much all Balcans, it's just the frequency of traffic and long-time sea view that makes it unique. In C Balkans you'll mostly fall into the rocky ravine not sea ravine if you slip - hard to tell what is worse;) Never been really worried driving there, finding corrupt cops (asking for a bribe in Bosnia or MNE) to be generally bigger worry than the roads itself.

Back where I came from we also have this kind of deceptive road. Superficially it looks great, with smooth road surface and nice road signs but the road slanted outwards which makes cars to move away from the roads and into the ravine. There's also crossing lines in areas where cars are going downhill, acute bends etc.

Yuop, as a tourist I have driven this one. It's indeed very tricky and you have to pay attention. Nothing is exaggerated in this documentary. Great stuff again. Thanks for posting.

He mentions accidents from 1995 to 2010 so its around 10 years old. Theres a real highway yes, but this road is still heavily used and its the only link to towns along it. And what do you mean theres no speed limit on the highway? Lol

There is a "real" highway to south, up to Ploče. Rest of it, to Dubrovnik is this local road. Max speed on highway is 130kmh..usually there are lots of undercover police cars,so be carefull about your speed..

I drove on the Jadranska Magistrala several times, during vacation, and I love it. My PC desktop is a photo of it since 2018. It is sometime a mess, during summer, but it is awesome and its beauty is stunning... I hope I can drive on it by motorbike, since I only got there with my autocaravan before and car+caravan recently.

Speaking of "World's Most Dangerous Roads", this road is not by any means one of them. Nevertheless, I must confess that I really enjoy these documentaries.

To keep the spirit, it would be nice to make a documentary about DN2-E85 Road which connects the capital city of Romania, Bucharest, to the north-east region of Romania called Moldova, to Suceava. That would be a subject due to the undersizing of the road compared to the traffic, and the madness of the drivers that are tranziting it.

The funny thing i found was at times he had someone driving next to him filming him through his drivers window on this dangerous road but it is with out doubt a beautiful road to go along reminds me of driving next to the lakes in Italy where you also get crazy drivers as well.

Construction in the 60’s and constant improvements and nobody ever thought of elevated pedestrian crossings?
