World's First RC Me-163 With Real Rocket Engine

The world's first Rocket Engine mounted into a RC Messerschmitt Me-163B
It's a DIY ECU-controlled re-ignitable rocket engine.
Model Data:
Maßstab / Scale: 1/10
Spw. / Span: 950 mm
Länge / Lenght: 585 mm
Gewicht / Weight: 970 g (voll betankt ), 830 g leer / 1.98 pounds (with fuel) and 1.83 pounds empty
Powerplant: ECU-controlled hybrid rocket engine with 79.66 lbf·in (1.98 pound) thrust that can be switched off and re-ignited at any time.
EPP foam model from "Durafly", stripped to a minimum weight and reinforced with carbon fiber.
-- ENGLISH --
Kai has developed the engine including the ECU for over 20 years (electronics technician) and over the last 4 years, Jo was responsible for converting it into a model and slimming down the engine mass, including manufacturing the engine components for use in the model.
Our motivation was the dream of a Me-163 with an „original engine“ over many years. In comparison to the original Me-163 this engine should be absolutely safe and reliable at model scale operation. Another huge challenge was to start and re-start this engine without any pyrotechnics.
Already available of-the-shelf rocket-motors can only run once after ignition and cannot be stopped. This engine is fully controlled by an own developed ECU which controls first ignition, safe-stop and re-ignition during flight. It even enables thrust control within certain limits.
Next to the challenge of the engine development itself, the operation and integration into the RC-model in regards to center of gravity, changes of center of gravity due to fuel consumption and especially intensive lightweight construction was mandatory.
The maximum runtime of the engine is almost 30 seconds which could not be reached completely at the first test flight due to several start attempts which consumed some fuel.
The inventors of this engine performed intensive research and could not find any report or documentation about a technology and its realization like that at model scale. For this reason this development could be worldwide absolutely new and unique.

Yes, the Me 163 was the only operating Rocket Interceptor in aviation history, remember almost 80 years ago. And still especially german modelers wann to fly this. I have three models same size like in this video, one in 1/4 scale and one under development in 1/32 scale wich we hopefully present on this chanel later this year.

@@ratajo Don't forget to mention that the wing of the Me 163 allows for a huge speed range without the need for flaps or slats... you can even build it as a glider. That explains its popularity with RC pilots too, I guess. Alexander Lippisch was a genius.

Thanks for this hint, but it's the old story of bigger is better. Not so in this Projekt: N2O consumption is hugde, means weight Increase and is very expensive. Is it a Hybrid rocket ? Burning hard plastic like Plexiglaz ( solid combustible ) in (liquid Oxydizer) Azote Protoxide ( Protoxal = laughing gaz = N²O ) . Where could I find more datas concerning this typical Rocket engine ? Congratulations for what you did : your success and the way you control the engine in-flight re-start .!

  • @ratajo

    @ratajo

    Жыл бұрын

Thank you so much! Yes, it's a typical hybrid rocket-engine as it is well known in the model-rocket scene. We come from rc-plane modeling and had the dream of a scale Me 163 with an engine close to what the full size used in WW2. We use a mixture of wood and resin to press solid combustion material and we use liquid nitrous (N2O) as oxidizer. Ignition and re-ignition is quite a challenge in such short period as needed in flight. Propane gas, a kind of glow-plug and a high precission oxidizer-valve controlled by ECU is used. Every singel coponent has a multible redesign and is stricktly built under light weight principle.

@@ratajo In any case, it is a perfect success! When I was younger, I had the same idea. I had found the Me 163 in Kit (ABS fuselage, and foam wings) And fairly powerful solid propellant rockets: The D-7 = a peak at 35N for 2 sec, then 10 N for up to 9 sec. (at Wolfgang Carstens in Hamburg) around 1977. I still have them . Your adaptation of a hybrid thruster is remarkable. Your in-flight re-start are spectacular ! Félicitations !

Hello Amazing Username, maybe you didn't see the whole video or check the description? The invention is not a rocket-motor in an RC-Me 163. It's about beeing able to ignite, stop and re-ignite a hybrid-rocket during flight for multible climbs, like the fullsize machine was capable. If you, or anyone else did something similar, wi'll be pleased to share the experience. Would you please be so kind to let us know your oxidizer-type, ignition- technique and sequenze parametrs for comparison? Feel free to also link pictures or videos.

@@ratajo Respekt.

  • @ratajo

    @ratajo

    Жыл бұрын

May be it'll be possible, but consider the loss of fuel when you only have 30seconds runtime in total. Red colour is historic, it represents the airplane of Major Wolfgang Späte, leader of the "Jagdgeschwader 400". It was painted this way for him as a kind of celebration to his efforts.
