    @@leandrocrs for you it cause eye strain. Not everyone is the same, do not assume everyone is like you. 28+ years of 14-16 hours a day in front of a computer, different screens as the technology changed, and never had any issues, no eye strain, no dry eyes. Of course, if you have a crappy monitor, or misconfigured screen (especially with "Dithering" option enabled, this can be modified in NVidia cards; it's auto-enabled on Intel cards on battery power for power saving), or bad screen backlit (eg. PWM-controlled) or bad room lighting (especially no small light BEHIND your monitor - there should always be alight behind it, e.g. pointed to the wall), then you can have some problems. However, E-Ink won't solve those problems. I love E-Ink, but because of other reasons. It's simply something different - a screen that doesn't need a backlight to be readable, a low-power screen, so you can read for hours on a mobile device, a screen that resembles a real book with real paper - just so you feel "closer" to the real thing. E-Ink is not your savior, if you have a bad room lighting, bad font setup etc. you can have as many problems with eink as any other screen. Start thinking, not generalizing and claiming other technology will be a solution to all your problems.

    To play devil’s advocate, it sounds like what he might mean is there might be “abstract data primitives” (not to be confused with primitives in a programming context), like todo data, alarm data, notes data, etc that will be will be stored in a common location that all apps can access through a common API to allow for better ease of reusing data between apps that use common data like these primitives. Do I think this CEO explained it in a kind of silly manner? Yes. But, IF I’m correct in his meaning, I actually think that’s a cool idea. It’s not a technological innovation so much as it’s a process innovation by way of introducing a new standard, like POSIX (loose comparison). Does this introduce some new security considerations? Absolutely. Cool idea if it can be handled safely. EDIT: Some typos

    I think, he means, to have a common data store for all apps instead of letting apps decide how and what they want to store. This way, a lot of apps need to think how are they making data store and process There may be two notes application, from different companies. Samsung notes and Google keep. Just imagine that your Google keep notes can be read and modified by your Samsung notes

    he's talking about letting apps create native experiences, meaning to allow greater integration. I remember when I had docked winamp bar at the top and taskbar at the side. Quick access, always. You can't have that now. I also remember Samurize, where I had performance indicators in the taskbar. Can't do that anymore either. I always wished I could have a hot corner with an mp3 player, etc. That's what he's talking about. The way Windows and MacOs have a special calendar and clock that's integrated into the OS, and no third party app can work like they do. Now, achieving that while maintaining security is gonna be rough, but at least someone's looking into it.

  • @davidg1830

    @davidg1830

    @@0siiris The problem with this reflective LCD is that you will need to turn on backlight (Daylight will use amber backlight) more times than front-light on e-ink, because there will be a lot of ambient light situations where you can see e-ink text good but you can't see reflective LCD good enough. Also viewing angles are worse. So you use backlight more times, more power. On other side e-ink doesn't consume energy for static image, while LCD does. There is a type of LCD (Sharp Memory LCD) containing 1 bit memory for each pixel on display itself, so energy consumption on static image is very very low, no zero like e-ink but very near because external LCD control circuit can be off while displaying static image; but I suppose LCD used by Daylight won't be Memory LCD (in fact Memory LCD are manufactured in very small display size; years ago there was a 5-6 inches Memory LCD but it was discontinued because there was no demmand, and today bigger size is 4,4 inches), so it draws more energy on static image as it needs to drive control ciruitry. You can see Sharp refelective Memory LCD on Playdate console kzread.info/dash/bejne/jHuYspdymMvPdMo.html It is a very refelective LCD. On other side, when you turn on backlight on Daylight (and you will need to turn it on more time than on e-ink) you receive direct light to your eyes, even being amber light (not so disturbing like blued light), it is direct light. On e-ink, when you turn on light it is light reflected on e-ink, instead of light emitted to your eyes. I like Daylight and I am interestes, it is even possible I buy it after it has been reviewed, but it is a refelective LCD, no magic. I like amber backlight, it's much better than having no backlight, because being LCD you will need backligt in a lot of situations, and much better than having white/bluish backlight.

    Pretty good salesman, but you can tell that whenever he holds it at an angle (typically holding it flat like at 6:31 where he's talking to the camera) that it isn't as reflective as an e-paper display and shows that it's just a transreflective LCD. He talks as if he discovered a brand new way to do e-ink, but what he actually did was poorly explained how an LCD polarises light. I'm guessing he did this intentionally to obfuscate that it's just an LCD so that he can market it as innovative.

    Edit 2: This display is just a transflective LCD, and this technology has existed for more than a decade; see the Notion Ink Adam and the OLPC XO. Calling this new technology is literally false advertising. Edit 1: The title has now been changed from "World's first 60+ FPS e-ink display | Daylight" to "World's first 60+fps e-paper display | Daylight". OG Comment: Pretty cool, but the vibe from this guy is very much pandering to venture capitalists. Also not being bistable makes this inherently not e-ink, so the name of the title is misleading at best, and wrong at worst.

Also, yes, because the display is refreshing 60+ times per second, it will have very similar power usage characteristics as a regular LCD display. All this display is doing is instead of blocking a backlight with a twisted liquid crystal, it twists to show the black surface behind it and reflects ambient light to show "white".

Especially considering he didn't actually say anything **about** the OS other than saying "other OSes do this thing, ours doesn't". Other OSes like Windows and MacOS already run programs at an "OS level". Look up the "protection ring" Wikipedia article; if this guy is talking about running programs at ring 1 or 0, he's completely out of his mind and doesn't know jack shit about computer security. If he's trying to mystify running programs at ring 2 or 3 and beyond, he's selling snake oil with the pretense of some sort of "mindful" or "human" design or function. Kinda conflicted about this. I think if this new display technology is as effective as they say it is and it has comparable energy-consumption to conventional e-paper it could be really cool! But I'm just so wary of any tech company that 1) builds its entire premise around "productivity" by selling you a new piece of tech to do the same stuff you can do with other tech you already have, and 2) claims to be reinventing the entire landscape of computing as we know it. Especially with all the horrendous AI integrations happening rn, ie the rabbit r1 and the Humane AI Pin, I'm just so disillusioned with any tech that's posturing itself as the next hot thing. But again, that hardware looks really impressive! I'm hopeful they're not super closed off about it and allow it to be iterated on outside of their tablet. Hobbyist-accessible e-paper displays with high refresh rates would be such a cool milestone, certainly more so than a roided up kindle.
