I wish Oceans Liners would make a come back. The journey to your destination should always be an experience.

Normandy was also a great vessel and she deserves to be recognized as such, she had great looking modern smokestacks and looked like she was more aerodynamic. 💕💕

In 1966 I had a summer job in a hotel in Cowes on the Isle of Wight. This is overlooked the Solent and was the perfect point to see the liners as they awaited their tugs to take them into Southampton. It was also one of the final years when there was a regular passenger service. All the classics were there, Queen Mary, Queen Elizabeth, United States and France together with the Union Castle fleet. Incredible sights.

It would have been wild to see the Normandie. Full on French luxury.

I remember reading somewhere that originally Cunard had thought of calling her Queen Elizabeth (the Tudor one) or Queen Victoria (I think it was) and when George V was discussing construction with the Cunard people at some event he asked, "What do you plan to call her?" The response was, "Sir, we are planning to name her after one of England's greatest queens". To which George said, "That's wonderful! My wife will be so pleased!" And thus, Queen Mary was named.

The Queen Mary beat Normandie by less than half a knot. Even with engines that had 60,000 more horsepower. The QM geared turbines were antiquated compared to Normandie's turbo electric drive. Normandie was the superior design in every way. That being said: Long Live The Queen!

We were recently discussing the QM in class, and I, being the ocean liner nerd that I am, was heartbroken at all the QM slander, just because of the rumours that she was haunted.

Thank you, Alex, for the great work you are doing. I live just 30 minutes down the highway from RMS Queen Mary, and was not quite 3 years of age when she steamed into Long Beach Harbour. My dad was one of many who went out to greet her, and years later still spoke with reverence and awe of the sight of her coming into port under her own power. She was the first liner I was aware of and was what made me fall in love with Ocean Liners, and her magic that enchanted me years ago has never left. I remember being thrilled to be aboard her and the memory of seeing one of her huge propellers still gives me goose bumps. I wanted to stand up and cheer when you said that both the QM & Big U should be saved. I couldn't agree more. They are priceless pieces of our history and must be saved. We need to open more eyes, minds, and hearts to these wonders of the world. You are doing just that, and I thank you. Let all of us who love these great ships stand together and never give up. They can, they must, they will be saved!

Thank you for doing these. I grew up visiting the QM, which got me interested in all the other Golden Age liners. As the last surviving examples of this bygone era, they're worth preserving. I just wish that wasn't such a precarious thing, financially... I know it's unlikely to ever be possible, but I wonder if she wouldn't be better off in San Diego or up near Iowa in LA.

From the thumbnail and title, I thought this was going to be an actual simmed race ! I wasn't disappointed though. Your voice is perfect for historical documentaries.

I really do hope that the next operator of the Mary is able to make her a truly world class attraction that people visit time after time. Great video! It's also interesting to recall the speed and size competition on the Atlantic during the period from 1890 to 1914. The fierce competition between the British and Germans over the fastest, largest, and most luxurious liner during that time is to be almost as legendary as the fierce competition during the 30's over the title of worlds fastest liner.

IIRC, there's a story that says that when United States passed Queen Mary, she signalled "Sorry to have to pass you like this.", to which Queen Mary replied "That's alright, a real lady doesn't like to be seen in fast company!"

Alex, I just love this video. This is great History! I have never met anyone, in person or virtually that loves Queen Mary as much as you in this Generation. Queen Mary is the epitome of Ocean Liner travel. What I wouldn't give to sail on her. She is so beautiful. I miss her everyday. The hardest part about being in Indiana is that I am 2000 miles away from her whereas when I lived in Rancho Cucamonga in California I was only an hour. Thank you so much, Alex. Thank you.
