Altered Carbon was absolutely a novel first, by Richard Morgan. Extremely good book, the whole noir elements from the series are even more pronounced in the book, especially because it really gets into Takeshi's head. Also, in terms of sci-fi, I have a special place on my bookshelf for the Lensman series by E.E. "Doc" Smith (who was a PhD chemist IRL). They're even older than Heinlein; the stories that are now chapters of books 3, 4 and 5 in the series were originally published in Amazing Stories as individual installments. If you want to talk about world building, Heinlein learned in from Doc Smith, and he would tell you the same thing. Some of the characterizations have aged like milk, but if you keep in mind several books were literally written in the 1920s and 1930s, the stories are amazing. Also, I read an article that Admiral Nimitz wrote to Joseph Campbell (publisher of Amazing Stories) that one of Smith's inventions in the books was the seed for the CIC in WW2.

E.E. "Doc" Smith's Lensmen series and associated works were my first introduction to science fiction. I remember waiting impatiently with my brother for the snail mail to deliver each package of books we ordered by mail back in the day (no Amazon or Ebooks back then). They were so engrossing and "realistic" to this kid that you didn't even realize they were written before men even landed on the moon. Next was Asimov's Foundation series and Heinlein's Man Who Sold the Moon short fiction. These were my gateway drugs to Science Fiction which I still re-read today. Great stuff.

I don't read much Si-Fi these days, mostly history type stuff. But the last, actually of several, that I really enjoyed of the old school is John Scalizi's Old Man's War pub 2005. I would recomend starting with that one, the first of the series. He has been conpared to Heinlein. The story, people, and worlds are well written and is logical, so much so that sometimes you can guess what might be coming but not that much and not in anyway take away from the story. But then I am old and can identify with the story. I am mostly a DD player, though I like Toulon. I hear WG is going to bring out a new French DD line, Le Hardi class? Hope WG does not screw it up. Torpedo centric DDs? I read the French used the Fubuki as one of the models for the class.

Forever War by Haldeman is excellent. You mentioned Heinlein for great there. Berserkers by Saberhagen. Bolos by Laumer. Hammers Slammers by Drake. Armor by Steakley. Heirs of Empire by Weber.

Alterted Carbon is actual a book. The Netflix Altered Carbon made some changes that are actually MUCH better than the book and improved the story.

Sci Fi... John Ringo, John Scalzi, and David Weber. If you like Audio Books. Try The Expeditionary Force Series by Craig Alanson is damn good.
