World of Warships - First Look: Tier VIII American Battleship USS Nebraska

Ойындар

Here's our First Look at Tier VIII American hybrid battleship USS Nebraska. Nebraska introduces a concept that's previously been confined to a handful of premiums into the regular tech trees: hybrid ships. I'm not 100% certain the game is ready for - or truly needs - this idea, but here we are. Nebraska is largely based on the hull and armament of USS North Carolina, married to a squadron of dive bombers similar to those found aboard USS Lexington. Join me for a deep dive and we'll learn more.

So, I hate to be the guy that corrects historical content (I promise I do enjoy your videos), but catapults were actually widely used in this time period. Seaplane catapults were mounted on battleships and cruisers, and almost all aircraft carriers had catapults in the deck as well. That said, they were not used very often on carriers. The reason for that was that it was a quicker process to simply have the planes take off one after the other, as it is very time consuming to attach one then the other to the catapult, then launch them, then repeat. In other words, the planes of this time were capable of taking off without them, so they didn’t use them since not using them was faster. Anyway, there’s my brief lecture. I hope this was educational!

I knew about the ones aboard cruisers and such, but I've never seen them on historical hulls (like, say, Essex).

@@SeaRaptor I swear I had posted a reply to this, but I don’t see it anywhere, so I’ll summarize it. That said, if you look at a picture of the bow of say Enterprise, you’ll notice two grooves marked with white paint. Those are the catapults.

As I played ships today in tier 8 with 2 CVs and subs per team. I'm really loving this new more engaging direction from War Gaming. The community seems to be embracing the changes well. A new hybrid BB you say?? More planes? Yes please spot me from spawn! I'm having so much fun

Yeah me too. I am so excited about all this I can't bring myself to log on anymore, and have started playing something else. Which is a really ominous thing to do for me. I have a lot invested in this game, but not so much that I will play it while only ever being frustrated.

In 1941 a partial conversion of the Lion class hulls to hybrid battle-carriers was proposed by rear admiral Bruce Fraser. After going over the preliminary designs the Director of Naval Gunnery gave his assessment; famously noting "The functions and requirements of of carriers and of surface gun platforms are entirely incompatible [...] the conceptions of these designs [...] is evidently the result of an unresolved contest between a conscious acceptance of aircraft and a subconscious desire for a 1914 Fleet [...] these abortions are the results of a psychological maladjustment." Drachinifel would expand on this in one of his Drydock videos saying the big problem for battle-carriers is that with a gun boat you want to put as many of the "explodey bits" (ammo, fuel, etc.) as deep behind protection as you can, but with a carrier you're kinda forced to put them high up in the superstructure/deck. You're left with a white elephant posing as a best of both worlds; a carrier that lacks the proper numbers of aircraft for it's size and a battleship that will catch fire as soon as you sneeze on it.

That's one hell of a place to mount your primary air search radar...right in the path of the stack gases, which are pretty corrosive IIRC. Not to mention the extra heat. And every time something on it breaks, you'd have to shut down the engineering plant to fix it, unless you want some smoked ET's for dinner.

To be completely honest, this line split is almost a worse insult over even the introduction of the fattleships. USN doctrine never even considered fielding units like these. Bryan Szymanski talked about this with a USNI archivist when they dug up blueprints of ships similar to that and the design that became Kearsarge in-game. Had they been built, these ships would have been a colossal waste of money, manpower, and construction material without providing any real benefit. They really lack the capability to be proper battleships, and they are horrifically outclassed against a proper fleet carrier.

Hideous is the word for this thing. I got it from the battle pass. How on earth do you build a captain for this thing? Update: I figured out the captain build. I dismissed the captain, paid a little over 1300db to recover the xp from the 10pt captain that came with the ship, and used the recovered xp on the captain of another ship I consider worth playing. Now I'm just waiting for the ship event to end so I can sell this junk.

It's getting tough to log into the game these days. 2cv and 1 sub game so far today I played 3 games to this point). Sub had stealth and I couldn't locate him because of this, so I died. War Gaming needs to add to nations such as Canada to the game. This is (in my opinion)his point). War Gaming needs to add to nations such as Canada to the game. This is ( my opinion) their way of making more money at the expense of the game and player base..
