We shear sheep as part of our business, and I can tell you for a FACT, sometimes the sheep get nicked. It is unavoidable. When we first started shearing, I felt AWFUL anytime I nicked one. But they heal up fine in a week or two, with a little bit of antiseptic spray. The shearing machine has two blades, the "comb" and the "cutter". A really, really good sheep shearer can get about 10-15 one year fleeces out of a cutter. Someone who is shearing quickly, or who is less experienced will dull the cutter much faster, and maybe get 5 sheep out of a blade. When the cutter starts to go dull, it will snag skin and nick them. The combs that are used on the machines have anywhere from 9 to 20 "teeth". The more teeth they have, the less they bite into the wool at once. It looks like these guys are all using 9 tooth combs, which means they are using the combs with the biggest gaps and will cut a sheep faster than any other comb, because the wider gap between the teeth of the comb means that more skin can be snatched up into the cutter. However, with the speed that they need in this competition, it would be dumb for them to use one of the combs with more teeth. I am flat out amazed at how little they actually cut the sheep, at those speeds, with those combs. That takes real talent and skill. I attempted to use a 9 tooth comb on one of our personal sheep once, just to see how it worked, and I cut the poor girl 3 times before I ever got done with the belly. I said NOPE, recognized that I was not skilled enough to use the 9 tooth comb, and it hasnt been used since. I could probably use it now, because this was several years ago, but i do just fine using a 13 tooth comb. I dont have to shear a sheep in 45 seconds. Hopefully that explains to everyone what is actually going on here, while people are screaming about how cruel it is and how "bad" they are cutting them.

Those saying poor sheep and thats so cruel, think logically. The sheep is laying against their leg its judt their feet that are moved infront or behind the sheerer to maneuver better. Also it takes like 1min to sheer a sheep and its only done twice a year. Cuts and nicks happen but a good sheerer wont cut the sheep at all thats why they have contests to prove they are a good sheerer and take care of the sheep so more farmers will hire them.

  • @mikalola5620

Its not cruel as it is rushed. There not going to go this fast at all times and even with this the sheep are just uncomfortable not hurt. The fact that they can go this fast proves they know what there doing. And id rather some sheep sheering than other forms of actual animal abuse.

nothing against shearing sheep, I just don’t see why it needs to be a contest. it’s obviously stressful for the animal especially with all the commotion, and the shearer is under major pressure. Just increases the likelihood of a bad nick.

Ok let me just say. Some of the people shearing did a very good job. It was clean. There was no sign of struggle from the sheep. Overall nice job, but some of these people. They shear terribly. You can see cuts on some of the sheep. They should not be cut at any part of the shearing process. One has cut on its face, and the sheep were struggling. Usually in transition from each position they don't seem to mind at all. Some of these sheep jerk and they're being moved. That's not how a normal sheep being sheared acts. You can also see the the sheep get stabbed with shears multiple times. Stabbing them shouldn't be a part of this process either. That's all I'm saying. I get that I can't stop this. I can respect some people in this competition, but some of them... wow
