Workstation Sinks: Uses, Benefits, and Costs

Workstation sinks are versatile, configurable, and can tackle just about anything. They're great for food prep and clean up, can help prevent food cross-contamination, and can provide valuable extra counter space. Design Consultant Kerry takes a look at some common workstation features and how much these functional sinks cost.

I'm looking for a sink like this for my camper due to the small counter space available in the tight space, glad I stumbled across this design while browsing for sinks.

That sink in your video is a two-level style, which is even more expensive than normal. I have actually seen work station sinks in the $400 range. I don't think that some of the features of these sinks are as beneficial as they appear, unless you are a super user. For one thing, if the cutting board is below the level of the counter top, you will hit your knife on it. I think that prospective buyers should picture maybe one or two accessories that they want to use, and base their purchasing decision on that. For my purchase, I really am interested in the roller mat, which can create a lot of space.

Thank you for this review, I'm ucrrently planning my kitchen remodel and since counter space is at a premium, I was hesitant of buying a huge sink (which I've always wanted since I bake a lot and use very big pans and they're a pain so wash in narrow sinks) and was wondering if a workstation sink could make up for the room I would be taking away. This seems like a good compromise.

A full sheet pan is 26 inches, which is shorter than the 31" which seems to be the average length of many undermount sinks with a single bowl. A workstation sink won't help you with that task. You could get almost any sink with no divider and it will work. But a workstation sink is nice for other tasks. For example, you can use the colander for storing sponges, soap, etc, if you want to get them off your counter.

Below he has a link to the sink. It is 4' long, which absolutely ginormous in the world of sinks. 36" is probably bigger than the average family needs; 32" or so would be perfectly adequate.

This review was absolutely worthless. In many cases the cost of the sink will be less than the installation. Workstation sinks are typically deeper than normal sinks. You may have to lower your hot water and your cold water. It may also be necessary to lower your waste line. Purchase of the sink may be around $500 expect another $500 to $1,000 in installation.

For someone who is going through a remodel, some of the issues you mention can be handled during construction. Then again, some sinks will be more expensive to install as they relate to counter tops. I need to investigate that issue myself.

Nope; mine was $100 more for the sink, not deeper, and no alteration in plumbing at all. Did it as part of a total renovation, but nothing had to be altered for the sink. I did not do an extra large workstation sink. I didn't need it.
