Workshop Tear Down & Re-Build has Begun!!

Ойын-сауық

This is the first video of the workshop project (and playlist).
We are tearing down the roof and building up the walls, and turning it into a workshop again as it hasn't been used in decades.

Once you get the walls repointed you should look into putting in a "ring beam" to make the building walls more stable, and give the roof a frim foundation to build from.

Absolutely! We will definitely be doing a sort of ring beam except ours is going to be located slighly differently to an ordinary ring beam (it’ll be at the middle point of the wall between the stone section and the concrete block section) :)

I love it that you’re keeping the walls and the trees!!🤗 If it was me, I would go ahead and point it all while it’s open and easy to do. And if I wanted that side door, I’d do that now too for the same reason. Take it from an old do it yourselfer, once you finish the roof it will miraculously start filling with stuff!! (It happens while we sleep) And then all the pointing will be harder. lol🤗❤️🐝

Hmmm yes the immediate filling once the roof is on does sound very likely so I think that is an excellent point. We will endeavour to finish pointing the walls before the roof is finished. Thanks so much for the suggestion!! :)

Do you cover the new mortar work with old sheets or burlap bags and wet them down? If the mortar is kept damp for three or four days while it slowly cures it will set stronger.

Oooo brilliant thank you. We definitely will try and do this as the weather hopefully gets hotter but for the last few months trying to get things to dry off has been the problem. Thanks for the tip though. We will try this!

I have so many questions. My first is how you looked at the stone work and its base to is how far you need to go with the stone work.. Is this type of work you've done in the past ?

As nice as the trees look close to the building, I am afraid you will only have more problems in the future. The roots of trees weaken foundations. The ever expanding trunks will put pressure on the walls they are up against, the branches will fall on the roof eventually, and all those leaves piling up on the roof, doesn't matter what material you use, will damage the roof from excessive moisture. I learned all this from experience.

The front of the building is being pushed back so that we can keep the trees. But if that wasn’t the case we certainly would be doing the old chop chop. Best to keep any trees one can in my opinion
