To be honest i only listen to this podcast for 1. life updates/ anectodes and 2. Gawking at what I percieve to be this ridiculous and alien world of work and "productivity" that these two live in.

All of the stuff like the morning "boot up list" has been super helpful for managing my adhd and I really appreciate that Grey is open enough to share some of the less traditional stuff he does.

Ugh. I needed this. I woke up and checked my text messages and got completely derailed this morning with life and potential work stuff. I went on a great big emotional Rollercoaster, and as Grey says, it was "no good." I'm determined to take back my day and get back to what I actually need to do today, and these other tasks can come back to me later instead.

Time confetti (where you break up your time usage into tiny itty bitty little bits) is a real thing, and it's the least efficient way to spend your time. Checking your email absolutely creates time confetti. Also yes, there is a little wasted transition period when you switch tasks, your mental processor doesn't just click between tasks like a computer. There's inertia, and the minutes between tasks types are wasted time.

I put this on while organising my email! 300 unreads down to 0 and my primary inbox is actually things that are important again!

Honestly, the whole notification problem, is why I have completely separate work phone and laptop. My work stuff is only on there. When I stop working, I turn the phone/laptop off, or I put them away in a bag at the very least. So after that I only have my private phone and then I don't get notifications about work stuff. And notifications with private stuff is easier to manage for me personally. Hope, this helps someone out there... Edit: I just heard Grey and Mike rant about the idea of having two phones. I'm sorry, I can't really agree. I can only function well as a human, when I can separate the stuff. For me, that just shows again: never change a running system, especially when it works. And all of this is so individual, depending on so many different variables in a specific person's life.

I feel their frustration with Focus modes so much, it's already such a good feature but it's missing just a couple details to make this feel like "this device serves a different purpose while this is on" Hiding notifications entirely is one, but I also often wish I could "trap" apps in a focus mode. Like, I would love to get notifications from Microsoft Teams only while I'm in Work focus but you can't do that without also allowing Teams notifications when no Focus is active. I know I could set up a dummy "not work" focus mode, but that then doesn't solve the problem brought up in this episode, of the notifications still hanging around, and also Teams being in the app drawer and showing up in spotlight and me generally being able to open it regardless. I wish outside of Work focus, my phone would pretend I didn't even have Teams installed.

1:26:53 Grey calling it a "boot up routine" and saying it's how he prepares to be a human for the day is not helping his case against not being an actual robot 😆

I said this in the ai podcast, but I'll say it here too. It sounds like you need an administrative assistant. Someone to help handle the flood of messages and free you up to do the work that makes sense.
