Working with Natural Born Killers: Using Natural Killer Cells to Improve Cancer Immunotherapies

Natural Killer - or NK - cells are one of our immune systems most potent defenses, able to attack viral infections and destroy cells that exhibit tumorigenic characteristics. UC San Diego physician Dr. Dan Kaufman, who has specialized in treating blood cancers for over 20 years now leads a research group at the UC San Diego Stem Cell program that is using induced pluripotent stem cells to generate NK cells that are targeted to destroy cancer cells. With the goal of providing safer, more effective, off-the-shelf cancer immunotherapies, the methods his lab has developed are being employed in a first-of-its-kind clinical trial anywhere in the world being conducted at the UC San Diego Moores Cancer Center.

It's really difficult to put all of these avenues of treatment into perspective. So many of them have the goal of presenting big bills to insurance companies. The track record of the medical industry insofar as cancer treatment goes is abysmal.

Norman Spurgeon No, in fact, cancer outcomes have improved significantly over the last 2 decades. Look at the reports from the International Cancer Benchmarking Partnership for empirical evidence supporting this. Cancer is still a major source of human suffering, and of course millions of people die annually from cancer and cancer-related morbidities. But to claim that the track record in oncology is “abysmal” is misleading and potentially eroding of public trust in our biomedical institutions and the professionals who devote their lives to studying it.

My sister in law passed away Wednesday. Early February she was declared a successful stem cell transplant for leukemia. I was shocked when we couldn’t give her organic healthy smoothies. They didn’t want anything interfering with host graft situation. The nutrition she got in hospital was shocking. , poor.

It has been discovered that these amazing NK cells are the true warriors. Antibodies come in later. They are the clean up crew.

Interesting, but expensive and not very fruitful. If you want to go the path of NK cells, try stimulating them nutritionally or naturally. This path is not toxic to the body!
