Working as an Off-Broadway Audio Engineer in NYC | Duties, Money, Celebrities, & More

I sat down and interviewed Ross about his job as an audio engineer in NYC. Ross has been working as an audio engineer for the past 7 years, and in New York City for the past 3. He primarily does Off-Broadway theater, but he has experience working in almost any kind of live entertainment you can imagine.
In today's video, Ross shares how he got to this point in his career, what his responsibilities are, information about the money of it all (pay, benefits, etc.), the long grueling hours he works, his interactions with celebrities, & more! He also gives you a tour of his current work space, and a very basic tutorial for running an audio mixer.

Nice interview! Something to consider; LA and NYC are certainly the largest, but are also the least practical places to self-start in audio - bc let's be real, the cost of living there is outrageous, and audio grunt work doesn't pay well anywhere. Alternatively, Nashville, Atlanta, and Miami provide similar volumes and types of work, and have reasonable COL estimates.

Ross is so great!!! Such a great interview. I also gotta give my love & applause to anyone who works Behind the Scenes in Live Theater especially sound technicians. They are the ultimate magicians who bring what you see on stage to life every night. So sad I missed Broadway Bound Hunter.... I love Joe Iconis's music!! Playwright's Horizons is such a great Off-Broadway space.... the history of new original works that have been developed there.

Hi Hannah and Ross ! Ross , can you explain the difference between Broadway Shows and Off Broadway Shows and where Off Broadway theaters are located? There can be a lot of confusion about them . It seems that you're establishing yourself and will be a member of the union soon ! ❇️ Great advice for anyone starting a career ! 🐶❄️🍒

  • @therealhannahlee

I can explain that one! Broadway theaters have more than 500 seats, Off-Broadway theaters have 99-499 seats, and Off-Off Broadway theaters have less than 99 seats. That’s the only real distinguishing factor. It doesn’t actually have anything to do with the location or quality of the show. 😊

Thanks for the great video! I’m a professional audio engineer in the area. I currently do a lot of work in New Jersey. Musical theatre, theater, general live sound. My main bread and butter is mixing and mastering recorded audio but I’d love to get more involved in the city! Any tips on where to get started for someone who doesn’t have any contacts?

OMG actors and microphones - I'm always hunting mics and packs aftershow. Not a big deal, but it would be nice to not have to do that. (Or have an A2 to do it, which I don't always have depending on the show)
