Worker shortage closes Los Angeles and Long Beach ports

A dock worker shortage has shut down the Los Angeles and Long Beach ports for a second day in a row.
The shortage comes following months of labor negotiations between the union that represents dockworkers and the industry group representing maritime shippers.
Many industries and retailers rely on the ports and are feeling the effects of the shutdown.
Kimberly Cheng reports on April 7, 2023.

*JUST CALL IT A STRIKE.* That's what it is. Nothing wrong with workers striking! It's a part of a democratic society. Honestly, more workers SHOULD strike given the fact that so many once well-paying careers have been de-unionized and so many people are underpaid and have sketchy contracts. It's not just a "worker shortage" as if folks don't want to work there - quite the contrary!

@@qbconnect2883 especially when the alternative is to ordered by the la /lb ports to sail slowly so they are not appearing to be waiting on a slot at the port, then when they get 70 miles from the port anchor there and wait several days for a slot to keep the exhaust further from populated areas. The wait time is no longer 90 days because of slow sailing and waiting further away to be out of sight and out of mind of residents. The best part of using the la/lb ports is the ports are slow to unload and even slower to get containers on a chassis and truck and into commerce. Then the ports are threatening to charge the shipping companies for taking too long to move containers. They have continued to "waive" the fees, but can enforce them at any time. The fees start at $100 a day and increase by $100 a day for containers being on the lot, even though the delay is the inefficiency of the port and lack of trucks. Then most of the freight is put on the rail system to reach the east coast to the population centers. With the expansion of the Panama Canal, the larger ships, and the east coast ports investing in improvements to their deep water ports and land side infrastructure, YES! Absolutely shipping companies are using east coast ports. Here is the thing. Accurate scheduling is more valuable than fast service that is never on time. Los Angeles and Long Beach ports have lost customers due to the lack of reliability.

I’m a sub hauler for port of Long Beach ca areas . This is all due to ports not hiring more workers. Also when Covid came around and ships 🚢 were bieng backed up for long periods of time . They also blamed dock worker’s shortages and truck driver shortage. That’s all lies lies lies. Fact the reason why ships were backed up and couldn’t unload it was because. All ports were not letting us use their equipment to pull there containers like always. We had to wait long periods of time inside the port in line to come across a chassis to pull a container. And these ports we’re stacking up all the equipment so we couldn’t use it making impossible to pull containers out the ports …. SO BLAME THE PORTS FOR THIS LACK OF SUCCESS AND BAD ECONOMIC . THEY NEED TO GET THERE DUCKS IN ORDER AND GETS THIS WORLD GOING AGAIN. I’ve seen so many sub haulers going out of business cause of this . BAD BAD BAD SHAME SHAME ON THE PORTS .

They are all dangerous and technical jobs. Takes years to learn the system. Even for the workers who've been there for years, the ports incur multiple accidental injuries per year and average at least 1 death. Imagine an area the size of Manhattan with thousands of heavy equipment vehicles moving around 24/7, 365, cranes 40 stories high bringing 40000lb shipping containers down off of ships. And it all has to be done in a hurry to keep the other inbound ships from waiting out at sea. They dock around 70 ships a day. Each ship takes between 1-3 days to load/unload. They move about 9,000,000 containers a year. Sorry, I know your didn't ask for all that but I find it all amazing;)
