Worker shortage closes Los Angeles and Long Beach ports
A dock worker shortage has shut down the Los Angeles and Long Beach ports for a second day in a row.
The shortage comes following months of labor negotiations between the union that represents dockworkers and the industry group representing maritime shippers.
Many industries and retailers rely on the ports and are feeling the effects of the shutdown.
Kimberly Cheng reports on April 7, 2023.

@@qbconnect2883 especially when the alternative is to ordered by the la /lb ports to sail slowly so they are not appearing to be waiting on a slot at the port, then when they get 70 miles from the port anchor there and wait several days for a slot to keep the exhaust further from populated areas. The wait time is no longer 90 days because of slow sailing and waiting further away to be out of sight and out of mind of residents. The best part of using the la/lb ports is the ports are slow to unload and even slower to get containers on a chassis and truck and into commerce. Then the ports are threatening to charge the shipping companies for taking too long to move containers. They have continued to "waive" the fees, but can enforce them at any time. The fees start at $100 a day and increase by $100 a day for containers being on the lot, even though the delay is the inefficiency of the port and lack of trucks. Then most of the freight is put on the rail system to reach the east coast to the population centers. With the expansion of the Panama Canal, the larger ships, and the east coast ports investing in improvements to their deep water ports and land side infrastructure, YES! Absolutely shipping companies are using east coast ports. Here is the thing. Accurate scheduling is more valuable than fast service that is never on time. Los Angeles and Long Beach ports have lost customers due to the lack of reliability.

They also blamed dock worker’s shortages and truck driver shortage. That’s all lies lies lies. Fact the reason why ships were backed up and couldn’t unload it was because. All ports were not letting us use their equipment to pull there containers like always. We had to wait long periods of time inside the port in line to come across a chassis to pull a container. And these ports we’re stacking up all the equipment so we couldn’t use it making impossible to pull containers out the ports …. SO BLAME THE PORTS FOR THIS LACK OF SUCCESS AND BAD ECONOMIC . Even for the workers who've been there for years, the ports incur multiple accidental injuries per year and average at least 1 death. Imagine an area the size of Manhattan with thousands of heavy equipment vehicles moving around 24/7, 365, cranes 40 stories high bringing 40000lb shipping containers down off of ships. And it all has to be done in a hurry to keep the other inbound ships from waiting out at sea. They dock around 70 ships a day. Each ship takes between 1-3 days to load/unload. They move about 9,000,000 containers a year. Sorry, I know your didn't ask for all that but I find it all amazing;)

Don't let this distract you from the fact that Hector is gonna be runnin three Honda Civics with Spoon engines, and on top of that, he just came into Harry's and bought three T66 Turbos with NOS and a Motec system exhaust.

We need our truckers getting loads. They are as important to our country as our military. Let's keep their wheels turning.

My father worked in the port here on the East Coast. Of Canada. He saw this happen in his career. The rise of machines and containerization. Now automation. And with AI, it will be white collar workers out the door next. A worker free economy. We can't even think how the future will be so different than today.
That's good they need to stand up against automation
It's bad enough the truck drivers don't get paid for their waiting or drive time only a fixed fee for the pick up and delivery and now this...
Just taking one day or two is enough damage and lack of sells production. It’s bad very bad! Sadly trucker won’t come back the majority of worker left the fields last two yrs.
This is absolute crap when you are short of workers, it just takes longer to get the work done. You don’t stop working. That doesn’t help anything and now they economies just gonna get worse and everything sitting in the bay.
Its not a shortage its a strike .
The national guard needs to be sent to the LA port to keep operations running.

I'm glad maersk the biggest port on the west coast is becoming fully automated. They did not sleep on the opportunity to build the port during slow times. Imagine how much more cargo can be moved on a daily basis without no interruptions or 90 minute breaks. We can go thur system failure every now and then instead of going thur union problems on a daily basis. 🤖 🤖 🤖 🤖 🤖 🤖 🤖 🤖 🤖 🤖 🤖

@@piratetown5403 been doing this for 10 years already and trust me I can tell the difference between a man moved machine vs a robot machine. Automation will help you In 35 minutes you'll have empty off and load on ready to leave. compared to 2/3 hours for a single transaction cus some union member is having a bad day and don't wanna move fast.. there has been time where 1 person will have to help up to 50 truckers at once and we all know that can take up to 10 hours for 50 truckers
YO, how do I apply for a job here? Been online but don't see actual place to apply.
How much were they currently paying workers?
Union strike for more convicts to get good paying jobs lol 😅 it's ridiculous
this is exactly why we are not counting on ports in Califuknia but rather in Florida and Texas for getting our food and cargo in. China actually controls the port of long beach for something like the next 88 years or something close, so its already a bad deal

@@rein3684 True, but unions are corrupt to the core, and tend to embezzle and otherwise squander large percentages of the dues paid into them. There has to be a better way. In the mean time, put people to work because it's not fair that the union workers hold the entire country hostage with their demands. The more they do that, the more everyday Americans dislike them and will refuse to support them.

How long do you think it takes to learn that port system? You can't just replace those jobs by any bum off the streets. Currently they see around 2 accidental deaths a year, even amongst the veteran workers. You bring in new poorly trained people and see hearses waiting in line instead of trucks 🚑

I hope it destroys California economy. The AB5 law and then banning all tractors older than 2010 and now banning diesel. Well it's going to destroy everything.
The unions and their tactics of work stoppages simply reinforce the need for automation. The unions are all about the unions. These aren’t jobs the average Joe can get. Those jobs are awarded only to family of current union workers. That’s exactly why they are disappearing.
I'm willing to work 🖐 were do I sign up?

You can’t even work at the port They legit have gangs or club union that run the ports if you ain’t connected, no employment
Pls I don’t know if is true but am interested to know if there’s any vacancies available pls let me know thanks
This just shows why automation is needed. These workers are crying themselves out of a job.
We need to rethink unions working with critical services
Better wages and stronger unions will solve the problem, management can squawk and cry and kick up a fit all they want but until they get they get the message this won’t change.🤙🇺🇸Union Strong.
