Work From Home (Physics Version) | A Capella Science
Ғылым және технология
Tim and Nate go head to head in a Fifth Harmony science vs. fitness battle! Who will do more work, Nate's muscles or Tim's simple machines?? Only an a cappella extravaganza is worthy of such a tale...
------------------
Want to work out you're too much of a nerdy weakling like me? Simple machines are the answer to your problems! Want to do the same amount of work with only a third the force? Thanks to work-energy conservation, all you gotta do is go three times the distance! Armed with these principles, I set out to the nearest registered MMA gym to go head to head with the toughest guy around, Nate Perl. My science and engineering prowess vs. his brute strength. Who shall triumph??
Well, me obviously... my secret weapon being sweet five-part a cappella and the wit of a few good puns.
You'll never listen to Fifth Harmony's "Work from Home" the same way again!
---LYRICS---
I ain't working out never
I ain't getting no stronger
I'm trading force for displacement
Multiply and conquer
Break out that lever
I'ma make it longer
Get that mechanic advantage
And I won't get tired
You know I always hoped I might lift
But I can't budge these weights alone
I need an incomplex contraption
To boost the force and lift the load
You ain't gotta feel the work (work work work work work work)
But you gotta put in work (work work work work work work)
Equal power equal work (work work work work work work)
Levers yeah that's how they work (work work work work work work)
Putting work to load
Tryna figure out the tension?
Look at Newton's laws of motion
Counteracting one force with two ropes
So you gotta take a quotient
Spread the work out broadly
You can lift a heavy body
With the displacement replacing the force
Ain't no need to be burly
I know you bros out there you might lift
Without a fulcrum, ramp or rope
But I'ma use that work equation (work-energy conservation)
Reduce the forces on a slope
You ain't gotta feel the work (work work work work work work)
But you gotta put in work (work work work work work work)
Force and distance make it work (work work work work work work)
Ramps and pulleys yeah they work (work work work work work work)
Putting work to load
Oh yeah
Bro can you lift for me
Zero delta-x, hold there for me
Ain't no work now; figure that for me
When he still putting out energy
Actin binding repeatedly
He running through that ATP
Muscle tension's costly
Motor proteins throwing off heat
Woah
So we think
Push or pull
Take some power as a rule
Well surprise, that ain't true!
Just a force don't need jack
But of course you'd think that
Spending all your time in your body
Yeah you gotta work that load
Yeah you gotta put in work

This is clearly the ultimate workout video. Next time my dad (also a physicist) is telling me I should spend more time at the gym, I'll make sure to send him a link. :)
I just had war flashbacks to physics class...

First, I would like to pitch an adaptation of The Proclaimers 500 miles when you get to 500K. For 60K, a song with number 60 in it. Though to be honest, I wouldn't mind learning 60 random facts about you and acapella scientific music production. Behind the scenes and how the sausage gets made or a plain old Q&A or a day in the life are also good options! :) {I feel I've missed the train to do something for 10K so feel I should try and get going towards the next milestone so I make something too! :p}

From what I've heard, the Proclaimers don't really like people parodying their song. Annoying, as it's almost as parodiable (???) as All About That Base.

I am amazed at your vocal range - you're like a one-man Pentatonix! I'm adding this one to my favourites of your videos so far. :)
Nice song for all physic guys out there working out (which doesn't include me, but I liked it anyway :D ) I especially liked the "zero delta x" part. It's not only done so well musically and lyrically, but it also adresses problems many high school students (myself included) have, when they first hear about holding up a weight is not actually doing mechanical work.

That basic counter-intuition bothered me for YEARS. I only really got a clear mental picture of what's going on as I was preparing this video.
I was getting into lifting (before COVID crushed my dreams), and this is my favorite thing.

Same here! The original lyrics are pretty uncomfortable...
My physics teacher showed this to the class and it was amazing
Awesome
Ok so I love the science, but that's not even the best part I love the performance, but that's not even the best part. The best part is how you add so much life to the arrangements! Like, despite being done in a studio with access to all manner of synths and such, the original was boring; here, using only your voice, you've made the arrangement so much richer, more dynamic, more interesting! Brilliant work, kudos!
Dure, you're so full of life, cleaver and funny too. You gave me this huge smile on my face. Thank you for this :-), I will follow you for sure. Keep up your good work !

What an awesome way to make my hellish time in Gym worth living for. Love ya, Physics
This video has motivated me (and continues to motivate me) to go to the gym. Thanks, Tim. And thanks Nate and Tom, too.
And some people think the Egyptians must have needed alien help to build the pyramids… Don't know exactly how they did it, but however it happened, it wouldn't have been more complex Newton's laws. As you demonstrated. Love the vids!
This is amazing Tim. Keep up the good work
*finishes physics homework three times as fast*] That's what I call mechanical advantage. Also, considering the arm itself is a class-three lever, I'd say both of you are using simple machines.

Sure, but a class three lever requires a greater force over a smaller displacement to move the same load the same distance as the class one lever used here.

I remember the nostalgia!!!!!! Omg I saw this so long ago too Love your music ❤️
When I was watching this- I thought "Oooh, yeah, biophysics!" It was mostly just alluded to in the latter half. But it's a really fascinating interdisciplinary field! Especially for me, since I've been exercising for over a year now! Stuff like isometric exercises basically being a tug of war between at least two different muscle groups to maintain a position, against the resistance of [a] free/bodyweight. Plus how lots of joints function like levers. And the non-isometric stuff has you doing all kinds of mechanical work. And how bones respond to stress. And more toward biology, I love how you can get improvements on stuff like VO2 Max and with phenomena like DOMS and Repeated Bout Effect. Like, mountain climbers used to be /extremely hard/ for me - arms shook from fatigue and I was gasping for air after like 5-10. But over time I've gotten to a point where I can do 120 in one go pretty handily! Feels awesome getting more efficient with these. And I also really love how it helps to regulate the HPA Axis to burn off anxiety. Psychologically grounding for that too. (Which has been one of my main motivators from the start. I'm so happy I've stuck with it!)

S. Holloway What is biophysics about, actually?
@ArtFreak17
7 жыл бұрын
Vampyricon Biophysics is basically where biology meets physics. Think about about the mechanical side to biology and you can start to see some cool things! It gets pretty deep/complex (as might be expected from a field that draws from even larger fields). I think a good example can be made about why bones are so strong. Their strength fundamentally comes from collagen (long protein chains) and calcium phosphates (crystalline salts). I like to compare those components to reinforced concrete. Concrete is pretty hard but also kind of brittle - with enough force, it will easily crumble/snap. Concrete is a lot like the calcium in bones, functionally. It's able to withstand high amounts of compression force, but not so much in ways of tension. But reinforced concrete has a steel mesh of rebar throughout it, these rods give many buildings flexibility and helps to distributes the weight of the structure and other forces that it needs to sustain (like wind), so the whole building can last longer. The mesh by itself would have low compression (a lot more easily squished down than concrete), but it can withstand a lot more tension (can be bent/twisted/swayed and be able to maintain physical integrity). Collagen in bones behaves a lot like rebar. Rebar's wikipedia article describes these properties pretty well: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rebar I also think this resource could a be a good jumping off point (anatomy and physiology - especially in regard to the musculoskeletal system): www.brianmac.co.uk/physiolm.htm (There is /a lot/ that can be covered by this field. Like how spongy bone tissue is reminiscent to bridge trusses, how muscles work, etc.)

Thanks for all your amazing work. I'd love to see more "basic" physics videos - Physics 101, if you will. While I love the MA/MS/PhD-level work you do, there are many many physics (and chemistry and biology) teachers that will love you for doing more like this one.

Wow, you are really growing better and better! I quite disliked the original song, though this is awesome and does deserve compliments. The arrangement was well built and complex, the singing was on point, especially your low notes, which I believe improved quite a lot (I was wondering, were they modified in any way? Because it sounds as if they were not), and the lyrics... well, carefully thought as always! Great job, man!
So awesome! I was never interested in mascular guys (some girls thought I was a lesbian lol, I'm not) but when someone is smart and nerdy, it's so great! Only nerds would be so cool, creative and smart to go into a gym and do everything with science! Nerdy boys are the best!
Yep we are working from home now

How have you enjoyed the rest of 2020 lmao, the title of this song would be how I would describe it in a sentence
The progression from 2:09 to 2:44 is the best.
u should win awards for this bro

Taking the "you can lift a heavy body" part out of context is... intimidating :D
My physics teacher showed my class this video and whilst i showed no emotion listening to this, i secretly jammed out lmao
Tim, just found out. You are truly Canadas smartest person, tied for fist, they should've just left it at that instead of giving it to Katy and throwing you off the pedastool, either way you are an amazing person and you inspire many.
