Work-around Found! GH5, ATOMOS, MixPre HDMI Timecode and Control

Please see the pinned comment below for the work-around details using a powered HDMI splitter box. Can power via USB.
I've received the same question 4 times this week alone: How do I get timecode and Record Start/Stop controls to work with the GH5, ATOMOS (Ninja V, Sumo, Shogun, etc.), and the MixPre (3, 6, 10T) via HDMI?
I was NOT able to get all of them working by routing and HDMI cable from the GH5 to the Sumo, and from the Sumo to the MixPre. However, I confirmed with the same cables that it works when you use just the GH5 and MixPre or just the GH5 and ATOMOS recorder.
One hypothesis is that an HDMI splitter might solve the problem: Route an HDMI cable from the GH5 to an HDMI splitter, and from there, one of the splitter outputs to the ATOMOS and the other output to from the splitter to the MixPre.
Has anyone had success with this?
If this works, there's still the problem of how to power the HDMI splitter as most of them require power. But I believe there are some which are USB powered so that might work.
Thanks if anyone has information on whether the HDMI splitter approach or any other approach works. I'll create another video if we are able to find a solution.
I know that this is a bit of a Frankenstein type of rig. I don't usually shoot this way but I used to and many others still do for various reasons.
Thanks!

Thanks to @Keith Francis, it looks like there is at least one solution: Keith uses the J-Tech Digital Splitter JTECH-18GSP12M. It requires power but can be powered via USB battery bank. It looks to be a fairly high quality splitter so it isn't the cheapest solution, but it is a way to trigger and send timecode to a Ninja V and MixPre-6 at the same time from a Sony A7III. I had the issue with my Sony A7 III with the Atomos Ninja V and my Mix-Pre6. I purchased the J-Tech Digital Splitter JTECH-18GSP12M and it solved the issues and no issues with 4k video. So now timecode works to trigger both the MixPre and the Atomos to record with the signal from camera. Works great and I power the J-Tech with a Anker USB Powerbank to keep it remote so no AC outlets required. I did try another cheaper splitter and it introduced noise into the recorded video so i'd stick to the J-Tech.

I am using an external monitor (Atomos Shinobi), so since I'm not recording the HDMI signal I don't mind a bit of noise (unless it's very visible and disturbing to view).

Yes! I ran into this same problem several months ago with a Ninja Inferno and MixPre-3. I emailed Atomos in June of 2018 and got this response: "The timecode and trigger are output, but for some reason, audio filed recorders like the Mixpre3/6 do not detect the signal. The work around is to use an HDMI splitter, and send one branch to the Inferno, and the other branch to the Mixpre3." The plot thickens because my Blackmagic Design Video Assist passes the timecode just fine. I was hoping some firmware updates would fix it, but no luck. Thanks so much for making this video! I was this close to making one myself.

Dear Curtis. I'm going to record video from my fujifilm X-T3 externally onto an atomos ninja v, and record the audio separately onto a mix-pre 6. I've been considering using ultrasync ones to add timecode and genlock/word clock to my recording, but today I read that mirrorless cameras can't receive genlock. Would sending timecode from my camera using an HDMI splitter to the atomos and mix-pre 6 provide exactly the same results as using timecode form two ultrasync one devices? Or is there still a benefit (such as less drift) in using a timecode generator like the ultrasync ones, in this scenario? Thanks very much!

  • @curtisjudd

Hi Nick, I don't know what effect an HDMI splitter will have in terms of timecode. I don't use HDMI timecode so I don't have much experience there. I would use two Ultrasync Ones: One for the camera's audio input and the other connected to the MixPre's 3.5mm input. The HDMI solution is rather dodgy from the standpoint that the micro HDMI connectors pull out even more easily than 3.5mm plugs.

Certainly looks like it's the Atomos that is not passing TC through correctly, if at all. Presumably the Atomos SHOULD be buffering/reshaping the TC signal, rather than simply passing through. Does this work with a different HDMI TC source? Do you have one to test?

It works directly from GH5 to MixPre. Is that what you mean by a different HDMI TC source?

  • @timbeaton5045

    @timbeaton5045

    5 жыл бұрын

@@curtisjudd Not exactly. It occurred to me that maybe the GH5 TC/HDMI output was maybe a bit marginal, so trying to output to two sources simultaneously was a possible reason. And maybe a different camera, or source of TC might work better. Looks like most TC sources are NOT from HDMI, of course, so may be difficult to test. However, I still would have thought that the Atomos would have reconstituted the TC signal, i.e. some sort of re-clocking, or at least buffering, would be happening. The use of an HDMI splitter to get the TC to both Atomos, and MixPre is basically using the splitter as a sort of distribution amplifier (good old analogue stuff!) and functions in pretty much the same way... i.e. one output used to drive multiple sources, which in the analogue world would mean impedances, cable lengths, capacitance etc would degrade signals and would give unreliable transmittance not unlike this.* However, HDMI (and correct me if i am wrong) is an entirely digital protocol, so there should be no problem in, say the Atomos reshaping the digital waveform, to pass on the signal, but i suspect, still that this is where the problem lies. I am also assuming that all three devices are using the same HDMI protocol version, or at east compatible versions? * Yes, i am aware that digital signals also degrade over cable lengths, but the point of a digital protocol, is that you CAN re-clock, if done properly without the attendant degradation of the S/N ration inherent in the analogue domain.... Just sayin' 😎

However, I had to do some more research (particularly useful was reading a Sound Devices website pdf on”Setting up a Panasonic® DSLR with a MixPre-3 or MixPre-6” and searching the full GH5 instruction manual for “Time Code”). Here are some of the things you have to get right in addition to what you showed in the video: ON THE GH5: - GH5 must be in Creative Video on the mode dial - Rec format cannot be MP4, though it can be MP4 (LPCM) - Rec quality should be 4K/8 bit/60p, even though the Ninja will show it as 4K/10 bit/60p - Menu > Motion Picture > Time Code > count up - FREE RUN ON THE MIXPRE: - System > mode - advanced - Outputs > St Out Gain - minus 36dB - Inputs > Aux in Mode - camera - Inputs > Camera Gain - plus 20dB - Headphone > HP Preset - Camera Stereo - Timecode > TC Mode - HDMI TC In - Record > Rec Trigger - HDMI Flag in ON THE NINJA: - Menu > Timecode > Source - HDMI But, after shutting down all the gear, then turning it back on, I found that I needed to go back in the Ninja menu and turn timecode on again, but at least it works predictably. - HOWEVER! I have been unable to get the MixPre to show timecode again, even after double-checking all of its menu items. Driving me crazy - I’ll follow up here if I can get it again.

Great topic, Curtis! Would it make sense to use the MixPre's timecode engine as the master TC and feed that TC via audio input to GH5 rather than use GH5 as the master TC generator. GH5 would then feed the TC via HDMI to Atomos (it looks like this bit is working in your video). This way all three devices will be in sync. This does not solve the record trigger issue (unless GH5 have some sort of TC input trigger for recording) but it will make a usable system . I managed to get all three devices in timecode sync (fuji being the timecode master) and I was also able to trigger the record on both Shogun and MixPre by pressing the Fuji record button. However, this setup is highly unstable - 5 out of 10 times I experienced the same issue you recorded, the other 5 it worked. I am not sure which is the culprit here (the firmware of all three devices are up to date). I tried with both regular HDMI TC + trigger and HDMI Fujifilm TC + trigger and both worked 5 out of 10 runs. The timecode and record trigger work perfectly between Fuji and Shogun. Also, I had no luck triggering the MixPre recording by tapping Shogun's record button which makes me think the HDMI trigger might be passed along by Shogun with no manipulation. However, Shogun is a slow beast and I noticed that feeding it with audio from MixPre runs into a 2 frames delay between video and audio - there is no delay between MixPre and Fuji. I assume Shogun is not designed to work properly with HDMI timecode, it has a GENLOCK IN at the back and I guess the Shogun can be fed with TC from MixPre (MixPre's timecode engine seems more accurate anyway) but I have not studied this in detail, it might worth it - I generally use a physical hand clap to sync my video and audio, old fashion but always working :)

Is the HDMI to micro cable also a 2.0 cable? Maybe the Sumo doesn't like passing the timecode data from a 2.0 input to a 1.4 cable. Or maybe it's the HDMI port/connection on the MixPre being mismatched with the incoming HDMI 2.0 signal. The timecode may be getting "lost in translation" so to speak. Seems a bit nonsensical but that's exactly the sort of glitch that often happens with software. Have you succeeded in getting the Sumo to pass through the timecode signal to any other kind of device? Like another display? Try something that only has an HDMI 1.4 input if possible, as well as anything that has a 2.0 input.

Good question, I thought it was but not certain looking closely at the cable. It says high speed HDMI with ethernet so I suspect it is actually an HDMI 1.4 cable. Now I need to order a new cable. :) Thanks for that!

@@curtisjudd - I actually only saw a single 2.0 micro HDMI cable listed, at least on Amazon. Still curious if you have been able to pass through the timecode signal to a second HDMI monitor or something. Not sure if the cable really has anything to do with the problem, since I doubt very much the HDMI port on the MixPre would report readiness to accept a 2.0 signal regardless of which type of cable was used. Really leaning toward this being an ATOMOS firmware issue, and you should continue shining a bright light on the problem until they fix it. A lot of people will thank you.

Can someone give me a HONEST replay about PASS-TROUGH latency on Ninja V, I know that the monitor has some latency on screen, what I want to know if the HDMI OUT signal is also processed or it can be just passed trough without any change and no lag? I need this device to record PC/Console 4K/HDR gameplay without buying a second PC, its nice small package, BUT i need to actually PLAY the game at the same time, so HDMI pass trough is extremely important to me, it has to be clean untouched signal, no delay, no lag.

Hi Mr. House, I don't have a Ninja V on hand to test. It passes through a clean signal, but I'm not sure about the latency of the HDMI output. Perhaps someone like EposVox who focuses more on game recording would know (he's on KZread). You might also contact ATOMOS support to see what they can tell you. Best wishes.

I use a D850 just as a sensor and lens. I record the log out to a Ninja V, I want the Ninja V to output the TC to MixPre 3 ii and in turn trigger the MixPre 3 ii to record. But Nothing I do can make it work. I'd of thought this was a good use case but no-none seems to have an answer. I get told to use the stereo out from the MixPre 3 ii and record the audio on the Ninja, but... The audio is not great on the Ninja V. I do use the stereo out to have a match on waveform, but I am male, so often forget to hit record on the MixPre, so end up with just the Ninja audio. 😐

@@curtisjudd Hi, I did look at that, I'm mainly using Ronins S, so extra cabling and batteries may be overkill. I'm surprised this has not been addressed given it's the most logical way to run, camera to 10 bit recorder then out via HDMI to trigger sound and or TC. I'm guessing they sell a "solution"
