To create header or footer, double click the margin at the top or bottom. And you could add everything you want on it

missed the most important part - if you create a header, it will remain the same and repeat itself for all pages you create in the same file. You don't need to keep adding that information each time.

how do I get the content on the header to be normal like the rest of my paper? meaning not looking like more light shade of black, it can also be seen on this video when you typed in name and date,thanks!

Word will gray out the header and footer when they aren’t being edited. However, if you print the document or export it as a PDF, the header and footer text will appear black (or whichever color you have selected). There doesn’t seem to be a way to change this behavior, so if you want the header to appear a certain way you may need to export it as a PDF. Hope this helps!

It’s possible to edit the template that Word uses for new documents (Normal.dotm), which allows you to set the default look for all new files: support.office.com/en-gb/article/change-the-normal-template-normal-dotm-06de294b-d216-47f6-ab77-ccb5166f98ea. However, we would not recommend doing this unless you need to, as it requires navigating into some hidden folders and potentially changing important files. Instead, we would recommend creating a document that has the header you want, and saving that document as a template. Then, you can open that template whenever you want to create a new document with a header. Hope this helps!

Here is a scenerio say i have a five page report. The first page is the report and the second is the table of contents. How do i start my 3rd page with a #1?

The only way to adjust the header is to change the size of the top margin. You can do this by going to Layout > Margins or by using the ruler on the left side of the screen. The header should then adjust automatically to match the size of the header. Hope this helps!

To enable the ruler, you can just go to the View tab and make sure the Ruler check box is checked. Hope it helps!

You’ll need to use the “Current Position” option to add a page number without overwriting the header. While editing the header, make sure you’re in the Header & Footer Design tab, and select Page Number > Current Position. It should add the page number to wherever the cursor currently is.

This DOES not work, in the latest version of word you CANNOT double click to get in and out of the header.

We’re not sure what is causing this, but there are a couple of things to check. Click the View tab and make sure the view is set to Print Layout (you can also use the buttons at the bottom of the screen near the zoom slider). If that doesn’t fix the issue, go to File > Options > Display and make sure the “Show white space between pages” option is checked. Hope this helps!
