I hope you can imagine the smell. The reason I do woodworking is probably because of the smell. When wood cut down, every piece of wood gives off its own unique smell. It's a pity that I can't pass this on to you guys. If you visit my workshop, I will let you smell it. It's free.

I’m not sure if I’m just watching and reading the wrong videos and forums, but that’s the first time I’ve seen someone dowel through the mitres like that, that’s a brilliant idea that I’m going to use. I build my gates for wood fences with mitred corners, and I think adding that dowel will just make them stronger. Great build 👍

Wohowow. My mate u r mental. Some little while back first big project was a posh shed for the wife. Had a mitre saw and KZread. Hadn’t quite worked out how stability is achieved by small things (like putting on the skin/the back). The sparks comment on seeing my re engineered 14th century southern german timber frame was the above with a few f-words put in. So according to him my wife now has Britain’s only Hurricane secure studio and if I ever need an earthquake secure book case... I still over engineer everything it’s worth it Brilliant mate. Absolutely brilliant

  • @billparrish4385

The cross-lap joint is one of the most under-appreciated joints, probably because it's hard to cut precisely, and if you try to 'sneak up on it cutting the wrong side, you can throw the rest of the shelves off (you did great, however!). I first saw it in a simple, 'tool-less' 6-pocket shoe rack. I next saw it as the pedestal holding up the deck of a heavy king-sized water bed -- and they just used fairly cheap-looking 3/4" OSB without glue. It held up all that weight (right at a ton!) because the joint was able to hold the board edge-on to the weight, using the strongest dimension of the board, and without danger of racking or flattening due to the strength of this joint. Leave out the glue, and it's an easy knock-down (but strong) bookcase. Use 1/4" plywood and small-size pockets, and it's a great core for a torsion-box bench top. Such a versatile joint! Glad to see you using it.

Only pro woodworkers would try that out. The interlocking of all pieces is quite impressive, although it's nothing new to us it needs perfection to cut.

Nah man, that's what I LOVED about this video. If you follow the way he does it, stacking the wood, sanding as a group, this is almost a beginner level project. You set the fence for the dado cut, and flip the wood. All the pieces are exactly identical and fit perfectly. I felt like honestly the hardest part was probably the steep angle cut on the table saw. Not sure if a jobsite saw could handle that cut. Everything else looked basic. I'm considering doing this project with my wife as a starter project it's so straightforward!

That is nice. The cubicles are a new form to storage books. It would serve well the purpose of displaying cherished items.
