Woodworker Sophie Sellu On Creating Objects That Celebrate The Organic Forms Of Nature
In our new film series Modern Makers, we’ve been meeting some of the most exciting artisans working today, from a glassblower creating mesmerising colourful objects to a ceramicist inspired by the storylines of biology. In this episode, we visit the home studio of woodworker Sophie Sellu, founder of Grain & Knot, in Penge, south east London.

Well, to be honest Wood is Never called waste It is always recycled in some way
I love how she really just enjoys the process.
Thank you for sharing your story 🙏🏼 What a wonderful way to get lost in a craft. I have a much loved wooden piece from Bali of a mudra that is ‘unfinished’ from the perspective of the workshop I purchased it from. They tried to talk me into the polished and stained ‘finished’ pieces, but I wanted instead the visible cuts, the gnarly knots and unstained raw wood. When you mentioned that you like to retain the wood cuts, I nodded in agreement and looked across and smiled at my wooden mudra 😊
I have also been inspired like others on here by this making series. I find the spoken word and the makers thoughts equally as interesting as their creations themselves.
I love this series so much! So great to see creative people making stuff :)

It is inspiring to see such dedication to one's creative gifts. Despite all the wood shavings Sophie keeps a very orderly work environment.

I’m happy you found something that brings you ☮️ try adding God as well! This reminds me I’m gonna try soap carving for a more affordable and semi permanent attempt at possible hobbies.
Her voice sounds like it’s coming out of someone else.
