Woodturning - You've Got to Love What You Can Do With Yew!
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
I was asked to make two cake stands by a colleague from my full-time job, she had many ideas but left me down to the final design. This was a bit of an experiment for me, as I wanted to try something I hadn't before by combining wood and epoxy in a river table style. The wood I chose was Yew, mainly for its unique wavy edges and bold colour.
The piece has been sanded to 10000 grit and finished with various food safe oils and wax.
The piece is approximately 23 x 12 cm.
Let me know what you think, and if you've got any ideas for the second cake stand!

Disclaimer:
My videos are for entertainment purposes only. Some of my techniques might not be the "best" or safest, so when using any tool or machinery always read and understand safety/manufacturers guidelines first.
And Yes, I'm aware that wearing gloves while woodturning is considered an unsafe practice. The gloves I wear are tight-fitting and don’t have any loose threads. I wear them for the protection of my skin. This is a risk that I am willing to take, however I am still very conscious of the potential danger and I do not touch any spinning parts of the lathe. DO NOT copy my actions if you feel unsafe doing so.

Beautiful! I made a wand for my magical wife for Christmas. Half sapwood and half heartwood, tied a ribbon and bow around it and placed on a tree bough. Christmas morning when she took it down, it was curved! The wood had been cut for about 10 years, so it was well seasoned. Beautiful wood, though!
Красота не реальная. Просто глаз не оторвать. Залипаю. Спасибо😮
+1 for thinking that color was not going to work out and +1 for being surprised how great it looked when all was done. Thanks again for sharing your projects and talent.

Thank you very much! I really appreciate the comment.... I think I'll have to make another soon 😁👍
I'm with a couple others who said they were not sure about the resin color at first, but it turned out complimenting the yew wood very well. So pretty!. I like the river style form as well.
Yew, came up with a great project for the of yew! Greg
I wouldn’t have done it that way. But hey, yew do yew….. (Looks great, Harry!)
Beautiful piece 👍. Cheers
I never question your choice of color or technique because it always works out in the end. Very nice cake plate. You made me LOL when you put the tiny mince pie on it. Thanks for the laugh.

Beautiful! When you were mixing the resin I was saying “Blue! blue! blue! blue… eeehhh pink???” 😹 But that colour turned out so perfectly well with the wood. And the shape is lovely!

@@HarrySmithWoodturning well… for some reason I think that pearl dark blue looks so nice with reddish wood. But this pink you have here is really something else!
Hey new sub here 👋 Nice piece
👍😊 Nice job. I made a very effective super thin parting tool from an industrial hacksaw blade. Does a better job than sawing. .

Way to let the wood speak for itself!
What's up with yew?
Epoxy resin, the fidget spinner fad of woodworking 🤔.
Too early for mince pies...

Still turning plastic. 😢
I’d ditch the gloves if I were you - if a glove catches on your work you can sustain a lot of damage to your hands. Never wear gloves near a spinning tool!
