Hey Jim. I’m a sheller. I clean my shells with white vinegar. Try putting some in a bowl covering them with vinegar. The bubbling begins instantly as the vinegar starts dissolving the calcium carbonate. Be sure to check the shells often so the vinegar does not damage the shell. Rinse with water and clean off with a toothbrush. Have fun.

I never understood the addiction to lathing. These people just love it. My handle for my favorite non-stick pan ended up breaking off, and I needed a replacement, so I used my cordless drill to use as a small lathe, and carved out a fancy little handle with a copper wire inlay. Now I want a lathe really bad, because that was so much fun.

That is a fantastic look! We live on the West Coast of Canada with abundant access to shells. Glad you mentioned the use of a respirator when sanding the shells. I was told by an artist who works with shells that the dust is quite toxic. Great work and instruction!

Hi Jim, I recently discovered your channel and instantly became a fan. I have only recently become the owner of my first lathe. It's only a small worktop mounted machine which I saved for to aid me in my wooden ring making. Prior to this I've only ever used a lathe once before when I was allowed to make a bowl at school, aged 12, for being in the top 5 in woodwork class (as we call it here in England).Now I have it, I find I can't stop wanting to do more and try bigger tools and equipment. I live in what others call a 'deprived community'. We believe we live in a united community and will collectively own better equipment in the future and use our skills to improve our lot. Thank you for passing your knowledge to us. 🙌🙌🙌👍

@@SpragueWoodturning Honestly, a lot of different kinds of people have terrible handwriting. My brother's a righty and his writing is so awkward it's hard to figure out what the letters are supposed to be. I see chicken scratch, flowery-to-the-point-of-illegible, lazy, misspelled, ultra-tiny, too-big, balloon and all kinds of handwriting that's just awful to try and read! Honestly, I just want to recognize you for caring enough to do well and also for having the skill to pull it off too!

Excellent video, thanks for sharing! I've not done inlays in wood yet but have done a few silver rings - if you use a diamond file, credit card size ones are cheap, you should be able to fill the inlay well above the recess and cut it back no problem.
@SpragueWoodturning

I don’t think this will work, the CA or resin will clog the diamond card. Thanks
@leftmono1016

@@SpragueWoodturning - it works fine on silver inlay rings where I’ve used CA to set lapis lazuli and other hard stones. Ground down no problem but obviously less volume of material. Just checked and it’s the double sided folding diamond files on Amazon which I’ve used. Always used wet which may help avoid clogging?

Jim, go onto a channel called Zebrano Wood Craft. Dan has a very nice finishing technique and he always makes sure his inlays stand proud of the surface. He uses Titanium Carbide sandpaper, I believe and appears to have no problem sanding even quite hard inlays flat.

Definitely liked seeing you use a respirator, most people don't understand how much dust is involved in turning. I was wondering if shells, abalone or mother of pearl, make you break out after working with them? Might need extra precautions if they do 😁 very sharp inlay 🥰

I’ve never had a problem with with breaking out with anything but MOP can be very bad for your lungs. I always wear the respirator when finish turning. Thanks
