Woodturning: Turning a Flaming Boxelder Natural Edge Bowl in (Mostly) Real Time 😉

Ойын-сауық

In this video I turn a small chunk of flaming boxelder into a natural edge bowl/slightly closed vessel and finish it off with shellac and the Beall Buffing System.

    Wow, Lisa, what a surprise! You (almost) channeled master wood turner Andy Philip of Yorkshire, England, as you created a beautiful natural edge bowl that could easily have been one of Andy's creations. Until now, I had no idea that you're one of Andy's fans. Well done and absolutely brilliant! 👍❤

Spent all day on the roof doing the wood stove chimney so didn't have time to do much fussing around. Soon though I'll be relegated to the couch and I'll have some time for editing 👍. Left one. Labrum in both shoulders in time but the right one only limits my overhand throwing and has been that way for 20 years, so no softball etc. But the left one is torn such that the shoulder dislocates and that's happening more and more frequently so it's time to get it fixed.

    Hi Lance! Yeah mine is to repair a torn labrum. Actually have that in both shoulders but my right one just limits my overhand throwing motion and has been that way for 2 years. The left one actually randomly dislocates and gets worse every time it happens so it's time to fix it. I go on Nov 13. I'll send you good healing vibes 👍

    Nice bowl Lisa. Hope your surgery is successful in fixing the problem. In the video you use both Thompson and Hurricane gouges for turning. I’m in the market for another bowl gouge and wonder if the Thompson is really that much better than a Hurricane. The Thompson is nearly double the price if I get a handle to with it. Thoughts? Take care, Stuart

  • @LisaRamlow

    @LisaRamlow

    9 ай бұрын

    Hey Stuart! I love my Thompson and it does hold an edge a bit longer but I use the Hurricane as least as much and am quite happy with it - these are the standard HSS Hurricane gouges not the M2 or M42 Cryo. I added the link to the video description so you can see the set I have. I find the handles to be completely satisfactory on the Hurricanes. I do love the big, heavier Thompson handle but for the money I am really pleased with the Hurricanes.

    @@LisaRamlow Thanks for the feedback Lisa, I really appreciate it. I have one Hurricane bowl gouge already (3/8"). It's... ok but I don't use it much except when removing tenons. I like the handle fine and prefer wood anyway. I prefer a 5/8" for nearly everything as it can do almost everything a bowl maker needs done IMO. With my new lathe I can do up to 15" bowls over the bed so I'm seriously considering getting a 3/4" just for roughing.
