Woodturning - Split and Spalted Ash
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
In this woodturning video, I fill a large split in a cool piece of Spalted Ash with epoxy and turn a hollow form.. The original plan was to keep the natural edge on this piece but the bark was loose and I thought it would be better to spin it and show off the filled split..

I had to Google "spalted", and I now feel educated as well as artistically entertained! The subtle amount of blue resin really set the markings off a treat. Absolutely beautiful!

For those of us too lazy to check, Spalting is when fungi infect the tree and cause the wood to turn different colors

Not only do I not have to work today, I wake up and see a new video from Andy. Today is going to be a really good day.
The spalting in this piece is spectacular and you brought out every bit of its beauty. Wow! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
When you began turning the natural edge away I went, "Nooooooooooooooo!" so I'm glad you explained why you did it. I love the final shape of the vessel, and of course the spalting is exquisite.
Wow. Absolutely gorgeous piece of wood and work.

I love spalted maple and that is an excellent piece. Well done Andy.
Beautiful work of nature and talent 👏 from a Master Carpenter !!!
Lovely Andy! The patern on the wood made think of the time that you used and electrical current to burn random lines on the wood. You master so many techniques!
A particularly beautiful piece. I love the blue - just right!
You do an amazing 👏 ❤️ 💕 💖 💗 job of all of your work 🎉😊
Beautiful. Split + spalted = splalted? The blue-green vein in it gives it an extra punch of wow. Thank you again for sharing.

Another gem for your collection Andy. Thank you sir!
One very beautiful piece sir as always.
Really nice, Andy. Great choice to make a hollow form instead of a natural edge. Bill
Very beautiful piece. I love it
I don't think that could be improved in any way. The amazing natural patterning of the wood, the perfect contrast of the blue resin stripe. I love the pieces where the wood itself is the subject and you enable it to sing. Coloured pencils and mosaics of different coloured woods are great fun but there the star is the technique. Here it's all about the wood.

That really is a beautiful piece of Spalted Ash. it is by far my favourite Type of wood, no matter what tree it comes from. It is unique in the way it is produced and every piece is so different. I really love what you have done with this by adding the resin. It really has finished it off fantastically.
Loved it! The wood is so beautiful! It looks like marble!

When you use the tools on the inside of the piece, you can't see, you must be doing it by feel? Is there a term for that part of the process? I am in complete awe of the skill.
Muito bonito ; exelent 😊
Way to take advantage of an, otherwise, useless piece of wood for turning. Great job!
Wow!
nice piece ... just a thought but why dont you make a two or even three hole vase ... i just always see one hole vases
Thanks.
Keren banget sobat
Does anyone have any idea how often Spalted wood gets created on purpose vs. it being a natural occurrence?
The spalting looks like an antique map. Beautiful!
