Woodturning // Segmented Aromatic Cedar Vase

Ойын-сауық

This vase is available a twoodbytoth.bigcartel.com
This Vase is made in cedar, black veneer and ziricote. Its 18 inches tall and 6 inches wide. Every ring on this vase is tapered to 7 degrees which makes you give the vase a second look. This is my 110th vase. I started the series back in 2007 with the hopes of making 100 vases, the series continues....

    When a Wood by Toth come up in my to-watch list I know I'm in for something special. Not every week, sure, but if it was I'd know something was wrong. These creations take lots of time, time and effort.

    I wonder if instead of black paper between the blocks if you used a translucent material like clear plastic (or tinted) if a light source was inside the vase, would it illuminate through the segments and look cool?

    Just awesome! Could you explain what mean by the 7 degree taper? Thanks, Stuart

  • @jackharris9740

    @jackharris9740

    4 жыл бұрын

    Unless I'm mistaken, if you look at each ring that makes up the vase, you'll see that they're not flat. Each piece has been cut with a 7 degree taper and then stacked, as rings, alternating thicknesses so that on any given side of the vase, you've got a short ring and then a long ring. I never would have thought of doing that, and I definitely don't have the engineering skills to do it.

    That traps the piece and also sawdust builds up by the stop block. A trapped piece can go flying. Cutting to a line is surprisingly accurate and easy.
