Woodturning Scrap Walnut Surprise
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
This is my first attempt at turning a true hollow vessel. I used some scrap walnut off cuts from the legs of my end table build. This was great fun and I plan to make more hallow vessel type pieces in the future. I got some new tools I am using in this video, I plan to go over all of these as well as the new finish I am using in a video soon. This may be the last time I use the urethane resin for a while, I want to go back and try the epoxy again now that I have had some experience with the urethane. Hoping to get a solid technique locked down so I can share some useful information. This was the closest I have come to having a mold fail in the pressure pot. I don't think I will try a diameter smaller than 7" with the polycarbonate sheet. All and all I am pretty happy with how this piece turned out. I really liked the black mixed in with the blue resin. I think the proportions are a little off in the finished piece, but I may just be too hard on myself. Will definitely be trying this one again down the road. Thank you very much for watching and I hope you have a great day!

The blue you use compliments the wood, but as a redhead I'm partial to green.

Absolutely beautiful. Congratulations on such a great piece of art. Thanks for sharing your talent.
Using a laser pointer is brilliant, never seen that before!
These epoxy art pieces are really beautiful, but so many people do it now that it’s kinda pedestrian. Don’t get me wrong; these guys have way more talent, skill and vision than I will ever have. Beautiful piece. Plus, I’d probably put some chicken in the cooker too. Two birds, one stone!😜
Stunning!! You are very talented!
Muy bonito el jarrón, un saludo desde Granada, España
Turned out absolutely beautiful. The colors really compliment the piece.👍👍👍
Great first attempt!! Can’t wait until you’re well seasoned! Absolutely beautiful!!
You are a talented and handsome gentleman. Blue is my favorite color. That vase is stunning.
Oh my goodness, why did I not think about using a laser? Thank you. Loved the turning too, novel and covetable. Got my like anytime!
Very nice. Very good shape. Good proportions. Very good color. Good production. Don't care for the music, but I don't like any music. I like the sound of the tools. I would like some commentary or at least a few captions. What brand of resin and the source? What thickness of the polycarbonate and the source? How long in the pressure pot? Thank you for sharing. Have a great day and stay safe.🙂🙂
tasteful creation nice work!
The way the wood layout gives a beautiful spiral effect. Also, the spacing enhances that as well. Excellent in all ways! Looking forward to seeing future projects.
Simply beautiful!!

Undeniably excellent execution of a challenging project. But what a consumption of epoxy resin and nearly all to go to waste! 😢 Tempting as colour may be, just use different contrasting wood species. ❤
Fascinating. That is a beautiful work of art. It would have been nice to see what the piece looked like at each change of tools.
Very nice work. Those colors go great together. Well Done!!
Congratulations Commander! Great work of art!!! 👋👋👋👋👋🇧🇷
Absolutely beautiful turn. It’s obvious you’re very meticulous with the entire process. The blue with that walnut contrasts beautifully. Fantastic work.

Definitely something I will be trying in the future. It’s on my list for future video ideas. I’ve always really liked the way resin looks butted up to charred wood. I’ve made some pieces in the past using electricity to burn the wood and back filled it with resin. It is a very cool look. Thanks for watching! Hope you have a great day!
Beautiful work. May I say also very brave!! Turning this vase without a lathe steady was very courageous 😮
I have a 12 and 20 general lathe, i love mine

That is the best combination of wood and resin turned into a vase that I've seen. Still a bit confused about the original "off cuts". The dimensions seemed to be pretty accurate or is that just me? Anyway, congratulations. This was brilliant.

Thanks for watching. The off cuts were from a previous video of building two end tables. I did cut the pointy ends off so they would fit in the pressure pot, but I just got lucky the angles worked out. Thanks for watching and leaving a comment. I hope you have a great day! Scott
That's lovely !

Nicely done piece. I also have used A. slow cast for a long time. Have always turned urethan and never epoxy. I do get some major chipping with slow cast if to aggressive with my larger diameter carbides! Enjoy your videos, stay safe.
Very nice. Lots of work.

Beautiful piece. Was that a laser pointer guiding you on the wall thickness? I've never seen that before, Ingenius. I love the whole blue/black streaks/walnut blend...it really works well together.

What and where do you get the plastic you use to wrap around the project?
Wow!
Did you know that rubbing alcohol will release the bond of hot glue?
Very nice artisan-ship, .... it's interesting that although "oil" is now a dirty word, that polyester resin is so popular, I guess most greenies don't even realise thier phones are made from fossil fuels.
Oi ficou show meus parabéns

A very elegant piece with the wood and resin shapes. I can’t wait to hear about your tools. I have a Jet midsize lathe and am wondering if there is a hollowing system I can use for deep pieces like this. I also noticed you using a buffing pad of some kind. That is also something that looks interesting to use for a smooth and perfect finish. I am enjoying your videos and hope you add some narration or subtitles down the road. Thank you

Thank you very much! I do plan on adding some narration In the near future. Possibly the next video. I struggle with it a fair amount and it makes the videos take significantly longer to make. We will see. I am also considering making a second channel. One for no talking and I’ll use this channel for talking. Still trying to figure this all out. Thanks for watching. Hope you have a great day!
What is the flexible clear plastic material you use to enclose your epoxy casting?
Хорошо, люблю токарные работы.
Another amazing piece! You sure got lucky when the secondary glue failed on your mold!! I notice the pieces of wood you used all had the same “twist” to them. Was that from the design of the table legs you got the cut offs from? Did you polish the inside? Or what did you do there? Your precision is inspiring and clearly a sign of the exacting craftsman you must be with “flat work.”
@squareandlevel

Those scrap pieces were exactly how they came off the end tables I made. Wasn’t really a twist to them, those were just the angles I made the table legs at. Definitely glad I didn’t fill my pressure pot with resin. That would have been a unfortunate mistake. Thanks for watching! I hope you have a great day!

Great video-This gives me some ideas for table legs with walnut blades and epoxy. My coffee table legs are usually 17 inches starting out. What is the max height of that pressure pot? Thanks love the blues!
@squareandlevel
3 ай бұрын
This pot has a max height of 12 inches. I ended up choosing this one because of its height too. It was pretty much the biggest one I could find before the price increased significantly ( think I paid $70 for it). Good luck with the table legs. Hope you have a great day!!
Nice. Please lathe guys stop the turning regularly so we can see how it develops. I zoom by a lot of the endless turning to the stopped moments

I'd pay 100's for that piece. cheers
The machine hum almost gave me a heart attack. My stove just caught on fire and then I heard the hum and thought it was the refrigerator. I honestly had no clue there was a difference between urethane resin and epoxy.
Wow!!!! May I ask how much the resin for this project cost? I am new and interested in resin turning, but a hobbyist turner.
@squareandlevel
2 ай бұрын
I’m sorry I’m not sure of the dollar amount of resin in each piece. I buy the resin in larger quantities so it is a bit cheaper. 3 gallons of resin will usually make 3-4 pieces depending on the size.
You got lucky that the form held. Next time wrap a with tape to prevent failure.

If it doesn't bother you, use the advice Place a “container” in the tank in which you will lower the product. The additional capacity will protect your main tank if the filling compound leaks. Otherwise, what leaks out will remain in the tank forever, and this is sad
Wooooow
how much would you sell these for
