Yup, haworthia and aloe bowls, they look really good inside with rocks covering the soil. Im taking a wood turning class next month just so i can make small planters in wood. Going to see if laser engraving and wood bowls could lead to some creative designs. I imagine you can epoxy it and really make cool, semi cheap planters. Cant believe you already did this. You're an inspiration.

Kent, you should consider upgrading your drill chuck to a keyless chuck. The keyless chucks are self tightening so if they start to slip a bit, they usually tighten up by themselves. You can get Jacobs keyless chucks if you want to spend a lot of money, but the ones from off shore are likely 1/5 the cost, and just as good, especially for this type of work. Get yourself a 5/8" chuck and you'll never look back..... Also, when inserting the chuck or other device into the tail stock, give it a bit of a 'snap' push into place. That will look the arbor into place...... standard machine shop practice.

Alumilite makes a food safe epoxie I use to make wooden mugs, that you can wash with soap and water. It is used on counter tops also.

Lovely project! And the spalted wood looks perfect with this. I'm afraid though, that over time the wood will decay because of the water/soil combination, in spite of the epoxy. I guess you could drill a slightly bigger hole and use a pot liner (? not sure if that is the correct word), an inner pot that can be taken out, also for drainage purposes. Plants love drainage. That being said, I am off to my shop to dig out my batch of spalted silver birch. Thank you for the inspiration, Kent. Keep spinning! edit: in the comments, someone speaks of a glass insert. That's the word I was looking for. A glass or plastic insert would be a good idea.

I made a beeswax/walnut oil mix that I use on cutting boards and water just beads off..maybe it would be good for cups to drink from, if applied regularly.

Great video, hey Kent and everyone else that's interested. Wood Owl Forsner bits are the best, the centre self feed screw is removable, the edges are easy to sharpen, and Milwaukee has a drill extension that is 7/16" true and is perfect for the wood owl bit 8" or 12" perfect for deep coring. Very nice project! There's an FDA food-safe-approved penetrating epoxy that I've used for drinking vessels. I have a project I'd love to share with you Kent. Its a cherry wood mug, one side of which retains the natural bark. I use the same grain orientation & general steps you describe here, but 3" foresner. There's a twist however: I shift inside slightly off-center to the outside; this allows the exposed-bark-side of the mug to be slightly thicker than the opposite smooth side. I gain a lotta pleasure drinking my coffee from it. On another note, I've really appreciated seeing you use 5 minute epoxy for stuff... that's gotta be so much better than the long-drying stuff I've disliked using. I don't like using epoxy. I'd love to meet you in person and express my thanks (with tears!) to you for your teaching & inspiration. Chuck w

Well I've made 5 so far. Some spalted, a fog oak, and a wet cedar birds mouth( my first) that I was drying in the microwave. Learned from my sawmill guy that I can get a faster, better dry process by using the defrost setting. I used timed setting, mostly because I couldn't figure out the weight setting, which is what he used at 1 pound. I was running it for 3:33 min. then cooling for 10 minutes. Working great until I tried to excellerate the process by using a salt paste I saw on a woodworking site. BAD IDEA! Bowl cracked twice, maybe the wet salt or just the moisture. If I do that again ill try dry salt. Anyway, thanks again for the great idea. I'll be selling mine at upcoming craft fairs in March

Hi Kent, not being pedantic but dressmakers use CMs woodworkers use MMs, and you are right spalting always looks nice, the kind of project I would do if I was still working at the craft shop.

You could. Just make sure the glass is a loose fit because the wood will shrink especially if it's wet. I've made thinks with dry wood and even it will shrink to some extent and you don't want thee glass getting stuck.

Nice idea. I really like using a forester bit for the inside. I had not thought to make a planter. I make small spheres, very similar to this, but drill the inside to fit a tea candle. Also...cool shirt!

Yes, but be careful. The grain direction is reversed compared to side-grain bowls. A scraper is also good for hollowing a small piece like this one. Happy Turning!

Kent, I love this project great ideas. I do have a question on Chuck jaws. I have a super nova 2 Chuck I am having trouble with my tenons. I have made sure that I have the dovetail angle and the diameter correct. But my project keeps moving around. Looking at the inside of my Chuck jaws they are flat with a little triangle at the tips. The out side of the same jaws are dovetails. How do I create a tenon that will hold my project? Thanks

Kevin, my One Way chucks can break off the edge of a dovetail tenon. I make straight-sided tenons or recesses and the teeth in the jaws grab nicely.
