I wasn't certain what to expect with this exotic wood, but I had high hopes. Once the hidden grain in the wood was exposed, I knew it was something special. I'm so happy to share it with you here!

Rod, this is completely stunning. I keep rewinding and rewatching it on the turntable. The simple, wide bead in the base matches the boldness of the wide medullary ray flecks, and ties this piece together perfectly. What a gorgeous bowl!

Great cinema, this work. Leopard Wood, I had never heard of that before. The wood grain is wonderful and the matte sheen is a dream. Nice to see you turning "old school" again, without that CNC stuff. Sure, if you don't keep up with the times, you keep up with the times, but still the freehand turning is more real for me, it feels more testicular. It's similar to reading a newspaper, of course, I can read all the information on the internet on a PC or tablet, but holding a newspaper, a piece of paper, is something completely different. I'm a bit old-fashioned there, maybe it's my age. Greetings from northern Germany, take care and stay healthy. Schorschi
@RHumphrey
Жыл бұрын
Thanks very much, Schorschi! I appreciate that. I haven't gone the CNC route yet, but I've sure been tempted, to be honest. I still use an old school router too, which you'll be seeing soon here... I have enjoyed testing and reviewing the lasers though. I have family from Hamburg, and have been to beautiful Germany myself, though under less-than-ideal circumstances. Loved it!

I bought that big board a while back... couple years ago. I wasn't sure what I was going to do with it until last weekend when I got the segmenting bug and was digging through my wood storage... Figured it would make a pretty bowl or a great fail video, lol. Thanks, Doug!

@@RHumphrey not a fail for sure. Lovely bowl b
Beautiful use of such a fine wood, Rod. Really liked the form you chose, especially the bead. I have a very odd shaped off-cut of Leopardwood that will make a fine small bowl, or base. I cannot do segmenting, but I'm sure I'll find a place to use it well, as long as I'm not saving it like it's the last of its kind. I wondered how hard it would be, also. I just finished four Wenge platters, which was the most dense wood I've turned, yet. A challenge, but the results from those kinds of wood are awesome and going back to lovely maple will seem like a breeze. Thank you showing us what was inside that fascinating timber.
@RHumphrey
Жыл бұрын
Thanks very much, Jay! Give segmenting a try, it's easier than it might seem. Leopardwood is quite a bit harder than Wenge, about the same as Purpleheart. This completed bowl weighs about 3.5 pounds! Heavy! I agree, the really dense wood can give amazing results... and ahhh, maple! Turns like butter 😊

Big Thanks, CW! 😊
I worked with leopard wood before and I notice it has similarities to white oak. From my experience the pattern as it shows in this bowl depends on 2 things, the orientation to the grain itself and the proximity to the heart wood. Heartwood has less of that grain pop than the sap wood. Less so with white oak but with leopard wood is more so. With segmented bowls you NEVER know what the result will be so its all a roll of the dice. That said, nice work :) Nice lathe too.
Wow, Top! Not sure why some of the pieces had fleck and others didn't but it looks awesome!
@RHumphrey
Жыл бұрын
Thanks very much ,Billy! I think it might be because of simply flipping over the segments... but I'm not certain that's right. An oddity, but I like the contrast 😊
Have you ever turned leopardwood with the heart wood? I have recently acquired some large logs and the heart wood is full of figure and colours.
I have turned a bit of leopardwood but never encountered the figure differences you have here. Have you found a reason for this? It certainly is beautiful. Your finish certainly is beautiful. Acks is very good isn't it? I am surprised you didn't do the ring glue up on the lathe. You could have been a bit more accurate. Although after turning the bit of offset is almost impossible to detect. The end result is very good. Love the shape.👍👍 Thank you for sharing. Have a great day and stay safe.🙂🙂
@RHumphrey
Жыл бұрын
The only thing I can come up with is that some of the pieces were reversed in orientation due to the way I cut the angles on the chop saw. Yes, lol, the rings were a bit off center on that final glue up... I apparently let it slip a bit just before tightening. Thanks very much, my friend! You do the same. 😊
Nice bowl! I wonder if any of the myriad of 1911 grip makers out there uses Leopard wood for their grips? Have an Iver Johnson 6" slide case hardened finish 1911 jumping up n down sayin "me, ME!" LOL! That would really set off the finish of that one in particular. I'll keep looking.........................

Hello Ron, When I'm gluing up cutting boards I have found putting a piece of painter's tape onto the bar clamps sure makes clean-up easy. I stick it on flat not wrapping it around. Where do you get your ID coins? As always love your work, that is a real beauty.
