The Neverending Spalting. This is a GORGEOUS square of wood. And for those who don't understand why turners leave the corners on... it's a Zen thing. Helps you feel the wood and how it will turn. Why do something the easy way when you can take a longer more picturesque journey?

I'm a newbie, and I don't understand why turners will take all the knocking of turning a square into a round. Wouldn't it be easier to cut off the corners on a table or band saw so you startvwith an octogon shape rather thsn a swuare? Inreally like the esthetics of the bowl shape you chose. The result is really nice.
@alansimpson596
Жыл бұрын
You got there before me. I'm a dedicated hobby woodturner and was first introduced to the craft while at school many years ago. Probably because tools of weren't such high quality then we had to first take the corners off with a large block plane thereby making it octagonal. I still do it today using the bandsaw and it only takes a minute and makes the piece easier to turn. I can't understand why woodturners today don't practice that method. I'm in no way taking away from the piece as it's a stunner.
@JackMackWoodturning
Жыл бұрын
I have over ten years experience at the lathe and my bandsaw isn’t set up correctly to make these cuts. Overall it is faster and safer for me to use the lathe. I think you guys will like my latest vid. You could win some great gear to help you. 😊👍🏻 kzread.info/dash/bejne/a3dk08GPfL3YmMY.html

Nothing the past couple of years, but the last piece I restored was a antique Hoosier Cabinet. Those that were used in kitchens before modern cabinets and containers. What is up this year now that it is getting warm, is 2 chairs of my grandmothers'' that are aprox 1940 or 50. I am going to work up to the family pie safe built in the 1870's. I know it belonged to my gr grandparents, but maybe originally gr-gr grandparents. I have a long list because if family doesn't want their family antiques anymore, they offer them to me and I take them. I love old pieces.
