Woodturning -Inside-out Ornament first time ever!!

Correction!!
In the video I said that I've been turning since January 2001! I meant to say 2021!!🤦‍♀️
This is the very first inside out christmas ornament I've ever made!
This is a non-traditional way of doing it, as I turned it before cutting it in 4, and reversing the pieces.
I used a piece of an oak staircase spindle that I purchased earlier in the year.

That's a novel way of doing inside out turning, as a new turner myself it's something I've yet to try (only started June of this year) .... but Christmas is coming so it's time to give it a go, as I've no bandsaw it will be the 'traditional' way. Cheers and keep turning!👍😁

I like your piece. I am an aspiring turner. I watched a video of a guy in Europe that made a holder that held the 4 already cut pieces together as a block on both ends. He then turned the blank between centers. His method did not require glue until the turning was complete.

Thank you so much! I'm going to try that method too! Right now though, I have lots of 2"X2" pieces of oak ready to turn. (They came that way as stair spindles) if I put them together, they would be too big for ornaments. (4x4") I do have a plan for that though! Probably a future video!

I never would have thought to use table salt! But I know that I should have at least used course sandpaper. As for the skew, it's the very first tool that I tried when I got my first lathe. I still get catches, but I'm fairly comfortable with it

I made one of those, but cut and glued it before turning. Getting it unglued and reassembled without damaging the wood was a pain. I like your approach better. If I try it again I think I will try to fill the small gaps between the pieces with sanding dust and CA glue.

  • @spiritwynd

Iv seen people use paper between the blocks before gluing, to ease the splitting after. Or they make a jig, to hold both ends together without glue. But I think I like this way better! Although, I've never tried those other ways. You just have to cut exactly down the center

That turned out very nice and your skew work is very commendable. This gives me more incentive to re visit inside out turning. What I found helpful was to glue a cross grain block on the end where the live centre goes so it's not trying to force the glued pieces apart under the pressure applied from the quill.👍
