Woodturning Inside Out 3 Stave Art Flame

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

www.AsWoodTurns.com
I had not completed a triple inside out turning for quite a while. So, after seeing Dale Dallon demonstrate an inside out flame, I had to jump back into it and incorporate the refinements I saw in his process.
Some of the refinements include:
- using CA glue dots to hold the first set of staves together
- using strapping tape for security
- cutting a groove for alignment when reversing
- rationalizing the wood preparation based on American Woodturner February 2010
Some facts:
- Board thickness(y) divided by 1.732 or thickness times 0.577 = distance to first cut(x).
- For a given board thickness(y), board width of 7 times x plus 2 saw kerfs is needed where x is the distance to the first cut.
- Subsequent cuts are 2x or y divided by 0.866 or y multiplied by 1.155
- A digital angle gauge is a great tool to set blade tilt.
Enjoy!

That's awesome thanks. I've been turning some dip pens which are partly 3 sided (using 3 colours of wood) and other dip pens which are round with an inside out section. The three sided inside out idea occured to me, which led me here. The flame looks amazing, so today I'll be attempting a pen with a flame in the grip (bulge in the dip pen). 16mm is the maximum diameter, so got the dread feeling already. It's amazing when I get a crazy idea how often I end up here. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.

Nice piece! I think I'll try to make one of these. Save your fingers! Use a dry sponge between your hand and the sandpaper. Should the paper slip or grab there's a layer of protection for your fingers. The sponge is stiff and gives the same support to the sandpaper as your fingers while protecting your hand. Hope this helps.

Hi Alan. At the first glue up, did you ONLY use the tape around the bundle and CA glue on each end? The reason for the question is I have seen others use paper between the staves so it would release easy after first cutting.

  • @AsWoodTurns

    @AsWoodTurns

    5 жыл бұрын

On previous inside out projects I have used paper joints. I've also used band clamps around the bundle. In Dale's demo, he used this process and I decided to try it and see if it would work for me. It did. I think paper joints are more secure but this was adequate. Thank you Ed Alan
