Woodturning - Curly Beech Platter (hidden bark inclusion)

welcome to this weeks woodturning video.
Woodturning - Curly Beech Platter (hidden bark inclusion)
In this woodworking video I use a woodturning lathe to turn a piece of air dried curly beech into a shallow bowl/platter
when woodturning a piece like this I like to take away layers until I see what shape the wood wants to be and which part of the wood is going to have the best effect, this is what i find so enjoyable about woodturning.
This piece of beech had a huge bark inclusion running right through the centre, normally i would leave this untouched but this one made the piece structurally weak, my solution in this case was to fill the void with CA glue and sawdust. had i have had epoxy resin to hand this would have been a good opportunity to add some colour. as it turned out i like the subtle impact of the sawdust filler

    Cheers John, yeah I really did, I knew that lovely figure was in the wood somewhere, the challenge was to work out which face to make the top and how deep to go. Hopefully I captured it well. It always interests me how many different outcomes a single piece of wood could have depending of how you turn it. I guess that’s why this never gets boring.

    Nice looking platter. One safety thing I would like to mention is I have been taught is that using steel wool on a spinning lathe can be very dangerous. If the wool string were to catch on the spinning wood or lathe parts it could cause serious injury to the woodturners hand.

  • @JackMackWoodturning

    @JackMackWoodturning

    3 жыл бұрын

    That is a very good point but you are missing the really important detail. Using wire wool is safe on turnings but it’s very dangerous to wrap it around your fingers to get a firm hold. Anything you hold to a spinning workpiece should be held with a gentle grip free from tangling with your hands. Thanks for your input. And thanks for following along 👍🏻

If you want to have a finish like this make sure you sand properly from what ever grit you need to start with through to 600, then finish with fine wire wool at a moderately high speed, then seal (shellac) cut back with wire Wool again (low speed) then top with a paste wax or danish oil.. 👌🏻
