Woodturning a Spruce Burl

Ойын-сауық

This is the 2nd spruce burl I've turned. This one was interesting, having sappy like pockets (though not positive it was sap).

I haven't had any issues with them and I love the fact that can I can change the jaws in about 20 seconds. The jaws are not numbered and can be attached in any order. No regrets. Take care.

I have two chucks I use - a Nova and an Easy Wood. When I started turning I got the Nova as part of a buy package with my mini-lathe. That was an extended Excelsior that I used for hobby crafts - Christmas ornaments and the like. Over about 18 months of use, I bought several accessory jaws for it so when I upgraded to a PowerMatic 2014, I bought a 1-1/4" to 1" adapter for the new lathe and kept using the Nova. But over time, Carl Jacobsen and other You Tubers convinced me to try the Easy Wood. So when I had some extra dollars, I took the plunge. I've had it maybe nine months and I have to say I reach for it about 2 to 1 over the Nova. No slam to the Nova but at age 69 with hand tremors, dealing with the Nova's bitty screws is a pain. The EW runs smoothly, easy to change jaws (although I don't have many yet - hence, the reason I still use the Nova) and I like the set crew locks, etc. Also, I've seen zero runout so far. And of course, the ability to quickly spin the jaws in or out is nice - not necessary but nice. So that you can calibrate the validity of my comments: I've done carpentry since I was young on and off but getting into turning and carving is a late thing. Broke my back a few years back, so I've gravitated toward hand work, as I can't walk rails or wrestle cabinetry any more. I am strictly an amateur but one with lots of somewhat relevant experience, primarily in cabinet-making. I've turned a fair number of spindles (35 ornaments for family last Christmas, some magic wands as gifts, a couple of mallets, lots of learning pieces, etc.) and am now skill building in bowl turning. Mostly small stuff, under 7" diam x 3" height. I've made mebbe 20 bowls so far, both live edge and 'straight,' Some of the bowls are quite small and the EW chuck using the jaws that came with it does a good job hold in shallow recesses and short tennons for those bitty projects. Largest so far has been a 12" x 5" live edge. SUMMARY: I'm no expert but while I like both, if I had it to do over, I'd go Easy Wood. I just finally retired and haven't got my site up and running but you can see me at www.michaelwmcdermott.com as a temp measure and at least know a bit about the geezer making these statements..

Thanks, Michael. That's great info. I'm just trying out some furniture and cabinet making. For me, woodturning is so much easier. I need to get a better table saw...right now I have a $300 rigid and the cuts are difficult to get exact--not great for trying to building a cabinet or a table!!! Good luck with your turning and have fun with it!

@@PFWoodturning Dunno what your budget is, but when I started rebuilding my shop (lost most of my tools and equipment to burglars), I sprang for a SawStop three years ago, when I started doing woodworking again after breaking my back. I got the cast iron table contractor version and I am beyond happy that I did. Blew through a pot of my insurance settlement (about $3000 with tax, etc.) but I would do it again. The safety angle is important but the best things about it are the big three - precision, accuracy and ease of adjustment. As I said, I don't do cabinetry anymore but I use the SawStop to break down materials and for cutting parts for my 'flat' work. If you want to know more, feel free to email mcwordsmith@comcast.net.

I have both the Easy Wood chuck and a Nova chuck. I like the Easy Wood chuck because the jaws open wider and I can make larger tenons. I now use my Nova chuck just for Cole jaws and that way I don't have to continually screw them on and off. The Easy Wood chuck is expensive. I was able to buy it on sale and had a gift card which brought the price down.

Peggy, another nice piece. Regarding four jaw chucks, if your going to spend $400+ for one, you should consider the Vicmarc 120 chuck. Great chucks that will last a life time and available with a variety of jaws. The other chuck that I use is a OneWay Stronghold. Great chuck and well made. Again, thanks for all your great videos.

Came out real nice Peggy. You surprised me at the end though. When you showed us the bowl at the end, I thought you had switched it up with another bowl. Given that the inside seemed to have a low profile and looked really shallow. (Compared to the taller outside height of the bowl I had saw earlier...) But it all came together when you showed the outside of the bowl, I saw that it was the same one. I realized then that you just chose to not go as deep as you could have on the sides when you hollowed it out. Nice turn... V

I have had an easy wood chuck for several years, and it was one of the best tool investments i’ve made. Other chucks are kinda easy to change jaws. This VERY easy, VERY secure and VERY well made. Love mine and would be lost without it.

@@PFWoodturning Maine is pretty far from South Louisiana. And with gas prices the way they are, road trips are on hold for now. Maybe one day we could do a wood swap. We’ve got a lot of Cypress, Oak, Sycamore and Pecan down here. We also got a lot of pine, but it’s way to sappy for turning.
