Woodturning a Spalted Maple bowl

Small spalted Maple bowl with a Monster in it!
“Many of the woods I use are from trees that are cleared for construction. This is wood that would otherwise be burned or end up in a landfill.
To me, it is exciting to find the hidden beauty in a chunk of wood. Even a very plain piece of wood offers design opportunities. When working with plain wood, I often enhance the wood by carving or burning. My carved and burned designs mimic textures and patterns found in nature.

Poor wee worm ... it's head must be spinning 🤣... I'll only put wood onto a fire now if it's rotten or too small to make anything ... yet another beautiful piece 👍

Thanks Barry, I'm starting to make a few smaller bowls from the smaller pieces.

Thanks Doug! I'll probably keep this one due to the cracks. I wouldn't want to sell it and have it split on them

Pretty piece of wood. Can't go wrong with spalt. Glad the cracks didn't turn out to be a major issue.

Thanks Clint! The cracks may open up at some point, so I probably won't sell this one. It will just be a "catch-all" on the bench

Pretty bowl. Nice work. Have found bugs in wood before, but don’t really like finding half bugs though. 😳

Meet me at your southern border and I will roll/toss some nice spalted, but solid wood across the line (no bark or worms). Some wood is just too over ripe to bother playing with (experience). Better to have spalted, but still solid pieces.

How do you like the water base sanding sealer? I have a large amount of lacquer sanding sealer but don't like applying it by brush(not gonna spray it like you are supposed to)

I like the cleanup of water-based products. It helps to tighten the grain and raise it, like other sanding sealer, and it sands really well. I don't use it on every piece, mostly just on punky wood. But I like it! Thanks for watching ❤️
