Woodturning a Pierced Globe

My first try at a pierced turning, made out of Manitoba
To me, it is exciting to find the hidden beauty in a chunk of wood. Even a very plain piece of wood offers design opportunities. When working with plain wood, I often enhance the wood by carving or burning. My carved and burned designs mimic textures and patterns found in nature.

Great patience led to a lovely result, Heather. Great design! You reminded me that I have a Roto-zip tool like yours that I forgot I had. You gave me a great idea on how to use it in woodturning. Thanks!

Thanks Greg. This is the first time I've used mine in probably 20 years! I'm surprised it still worked. 😄 Thanks for watching ❤️

Great first try! Tip: For getting an equal sphere, use the top edge of a glass or jar that is perfectly round. Place iit against the wood to check for high and low areas as you turn. It just needs to be smaller than the diameter you are turning. You will be able to easily see where to cut or scrape to get a perfect sphere.

I was a bit unsure of the colour, but once finished and displayed outside it looked good ... oh and the piece itself is fantastic 😁 Suggestions ... 1) put your chuck key in the top position and then hang a heavy weight from it on the end of some string ... that'll stop it rotating while you're routing 👍 ... 2) to protect your chuck, just remove the piece, slip a plastic bag over the chuck and remount your piece👍

That's a cool unique globe Heather! Save some alcohol to sip on later and gaze upon the globe 😂

It was a great attempt at protecting the lathe from the overspray but after watching, I think I would try masking the paper to the lathe. Sadly, you had to make the sacrifice so others could learn. Way to take one for the team 😅.

Lol thanks! It was a pretty sad attempt to protect the lathe, honestly! I was more worried about the chuck! 😆 Thanks for watching ❤️

Now that was ambitious ... good on you ! The lacquer really helped too. How much ink did you eventually use ? Thanks for sharing. Take care. -Mike And the base of the RotoZipper was perfect for the sphere - kept the cut perpendicular !

Thanks Mike! I probably used about 10 drops of ink. Mixing it with alcohol makes it go farther

Yeah, way too much alcohol, Heather. That came out really pretty in spite of it. If you are using a liquid, it only takes a little. I use India ink straight out of the bottle. But if you want to dilute it, I'd go with a 75/25 ratio, ink to alcohol.
