Woodturning a Bowl from Bundled Firewood
Ойын-сауық
Inspiration and ideas can come from anything at anytime. I found some at the local hardware store in a bundle of firewood.
When the turning bug strikes, what choice does a guy have? I bought it, brought it home, and got busy!
I had to process the stuff, and it was definitely not choice wood by any stretch, but there was certainly some salvageable and useable wood between the cracks and checks and torn grain. The good news is, I made a pretty bowl. The other good news is, I still have some firewood to heat my shop.

Last time I was home in Australia I noticed my father's flue handle had broken and he was knocking the bare metal with chunks of firewood to open and close the flue as needed. Well he had this tiny drill powered lathe in his shed he had bought at some point so I grabbed a piece of firewood and a bench chisel and went to work, couple hours later (I had to set up this little mini lathe thing) I screwed on his new flue handle. He was very happy and this video reminded me of this good memory. :)

Absolutely lovely. "A few dollars for a bundle of wood at the hardware store." It's a joy to know you're in the world.
The segmented firewood bowl is incredible! Great work and vision, Rod. Thank you for showing the bowls I made and the encouraging comments!
Just as with a talented musician, the beautiful result is not in the tool or material but in the artist that creates it. Great work Rod.
Thank you for your service sir. My stepdad was a Marine and a fantastic parent. He passed away too soon.
1:13 ......Not going to lie, my butt was puckering when I saw that wood bouncing and binding. Very nice end product and enjoyable video. Thanks for posting.
The bowl is just gorgeous. It takes a real artist to see beauty hidden inside firewood. I love it.
That's really nice, love the shimmer from the segments as it rotates.

Wow. Always wondered what 'firewood' would look like if somebody turned it. I guess I know now. Absolutely beautiful. And to think that it could have been ash by now. Amazing.

THE BOWL TURNED OUT GREAT .THANKS FOR THE TIPS FROM DOUG
Something about his voice is just so soothing
That bowl is just beautiful and the concept of just a bunch of firewood reminds me of camping.
Firewood... it's not just for camping anymore. Looks great. Semper Fi, Rod!
That's really beautiful. You'd never believe it was a bundle of firewood. Thanks for sharing.
I'll never look at bundled firewood the same way again! Really nice.
Ahhh, the chatoyance! You taught me that new word in a video long ago. I throw it out there every once in a while to impress people. Thanks for another wonderful video and a larger vocabulary!
I love how you made something truly beautiful, out of something mediocre.
I like that we can take some old scrap firewood and make something so nice looking and useful. Great job, sir.
WOW! This is beautiful. I love how the whiter wood shines like pearl. Amazing.
I'd love to see an old piece of broken wood furniture become a beautiful bowl or vase, gaining new life as a new thing.

Good morning, Rod! The man, the bowl the shavings. You have some of the greatest shavings in the turning world. The bowl has a special beauty to it and the origin is where a great conversation starts. God bless & Semper Fi.
Wow, you have to love people that can turn something of nearly no value into a piece of art. Nice work Rod..
Just ran down to Lowe’s and bought two bails of hardwood firewood. Can’t wait to get started. Thank you for your inspiration.
WOW!!! Out of a bundle of fire wood?!?! Amazing, shimmering bowl sir! Thank you for making this video.
Gotta say I love tour videos I whittle with a knife wood strands like those are the dream so seeing you wood turn hundreds of those strands is very satisfying to watch.
That's what is nice about Wood turning. You can find supplies just about anywhere. I often stop as I am putting a piece in the fireplace and set it aside because something about it caught my eye, or pull over and rescue a piece from the side of the road.

Very beautiful bowl. Who would have imagined that those pieces of firewood had such a brilliant shine hiding inside. Great projects sent in by subscribers. Take care. God bless.
I think it looks great and Thanks for reminding me you sent those templates, I totally forgot about them with all that's been going on here, Thumbs up as always.

Beautiful work, as always. Love to see something boring turned into a piece of beauty.
Absolutely beautiful! You've discovered my secret, aside from two details, I buy my firewood by the cord and I don't have a planer...yet. Otherwise, this is the same process I use to make everything that comes off my lathe, it's incredibly rewarding to scroll through the pictures afterward and see the evolution of a slab of firewood to an elegant family heirloom. Thank you!

I never would have thought of that. My son is an artist and musician. He also teaches art at a local elementary school.Love that guy and you remind me of him.Impressive bowl Rod. Thanks.
Great bowl, Rod. The chatoyance is really nice, too. You said that the wood was nothing special. That was true until you finished with it. Now it's something very special. Stay safe and healthy. Bill
A beautiful piece, as always. Happy New Year and stay safe.
I am in love with this bowl! Gorgeous!
Gorgeous. Just bought my first lathe, been watching tons of 101 videos to learn, and guys like you for inspiration. 👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻
I like how the light makes the wood shimmer. Great use of less than top grade wood!
That is a thing of beauty from something destined for the wood stove.
It's amazing, I haven't turned a bowl yet. But I will soon, maybe in about a month. But for now I'll just keep watching when I can.
I am not normally a fan of segmented bowls but this is exceptional - a lovely thing of beauty and craftsmanship - with great chatoyance too! I love that you made this from timber that would otherwise have burned. Thanks for sharing,
That looks so good. I love the subtle sheen it has. The slightly different colours makes it look great.
That is beautiful! I love your work. You are truly an artist on the lathe! Thanks, Dave.

Well done, Ron! The chatoyancy is fantastic. And, well done making the value of that firewood so much higher.
We have a saying around here to describe a master crafter/artist: 'Give him/her a handful of ashes and he/she will turn it into gold'. Well, that's exactly what's happening here! Thank you for sharing!
Oh wow what an awesome and stunningly beautiful bowl the different colors in the grain is fantastic. It is good to see that you are still we and healthy.
Mr Humphrey, besides your incredible turning talent, you have such a beautiful and calm voice. You should make a channel only reading some stories for kids. I´m sure they´re gonna love. Cheers from BR.
Whether it's sitting by the campfire watching the flames dance in the night, or looking at the beautiful bowl you've made from the same wood...it's proof positive that all things have uses and hidden beauty. Semper Fi
Definitely a home run. The flash off the grain as it spins is superb. And from firewoos too.b

Rod, I've got about 4 large drawers full of scrap pieces of wood, I'm starting to use them for segmented vases, bowls and goblets. That bowl is beautiful, great job as always.
Its beautiful!! I rarely comment, but I enjoy your channel so much. And thank you for serving.
Absolutely beautiful! I always love the shimmer of the grain when turning on the stand. That oak piece made a perfect base. Great job Ron!
You brought that chatoyancy like I love.😍😍😍
Wow, that’s beautiful. Great job.
Beautiful bowl from firewood, literally. Thanks for sharing.
Beautiful bowl, Top! You never know what you'll find in firewood.
Oh my goodness! STUNNING! ❤
I usually put a segmented rim on my bowls. Making rings takes extra effort and time but create a look unlike a solid piece of wood. I also use a drum sander to flatten them to get a good, tight glue joint. Ring segments have minimal exposed end grain so turning and sanding are usually easier too. Laying out the segments, end to end on masking tape makes glue-up easier and faster. I still use a clamp to squeeze the ring for tight joints until dry. This is a good way to use those offcuts and scraps too small for regular turning. Good job, Ron.
Absolutely beautiful! Who knew firewood could look so good!
Like it no. Absolutely freaking LOVE it. The shimmer mesmerizes me. You should cut the kindling that has cool features up and put in resin for another bowl. 💜💜💜💜💜
Watching beautiful things being crafted out of ordinary low buck junk reminds me of what all of us ordinary people poses on the inside and what we all can be crafted into by Gods hands if we let Him.
Love the shimmer and luminescence. Nice job.
