This is what David had to tell about the song: "Having lived in an apartment on the edge of Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Toronto, I had developed a fondness for it from seeing it in the distance on a regular basis and also from a few visits inside the gates. There had come a period of time when I had been doing some soul searching of sorts and had made a habit of going jogging in the cemetery after work as a form of therapy. It was June, it was hot, the cemetery was beautiful and its beauty crushed me every time because everything hot and beautiful only reminded me of her, even more. It was during this cemetery jogging therapy that I realized that my old self no longer had a future. Upon that conclusion, I felt as though my previous self had been buried there and my new self would need to be reinvented somewhere else. The old me had to die so the new me could eventually, someday, maybe, actually thrive, again. "

Ratcliff The truth is i don't think theres any irony, but that he knew soon or later he would be the next one, He wrote songs about people who lived or surrounded him that died or passed away in tragic deaths. His friends from childhood or people he met as an adult and drastically had a shit outcome as a stupid death out of nothing. In a sense he was basically death, Who ever he hanged out with, would turn out dead soon or later and that his time would come soon aswell, And it did, You might find my next words hilarious and stupid but this dude could have been a real saint and he him and we all interpreted someone who just writes music about deaths.. even tho as an atheist, some of us who walk the earth seem to have a true unique religious path in their way that was set for him or any of us to have our entire life. And David was one by the looks of it.

I'm lucky I got to see him a week or two before his passing in a little bar in LA , I was lucky because his songs and how he sang them will always haunt my memory , I remember walking up to him and asking if he was David and he said yeah , so I stayed and watched them play with only a handful of people . then I learned of his death a week or two later . pretty sad maybe I made his day .

Ever since I discovered Woods 5 a year ago they have rocketed to my top favorite bands. The legend of David Gold continues to grow and he will not be forgotten. Though sad, his words are a comfort to those of us going through hard times. Only those who are sad will understand how relating to David’s sadness actually helps us feel seen and understood and thus a little better. David sharing his darkness is actually a light to so many, and over time more people will discover his genius. He gave so much more in a short time than most do in their longer times. We celebrate him and love him.

I've been listening to your son's band songs for almost 10 years and I'm terribly saddened that I didn't catch any of his concerts or posts on social networks. Imitating him, I started playing the guitar. His songs helped to get through the deaths of friends and parents. No matter how bad my mood is, I know that at any moment I can watch a video where he pulls a kitten from the ceiling and see a happy and smiling person I never knew. The contrast between the lyrics of his songs and the person that I see in the video helps me realize that tomorrow will be better than today, no matter what happens. Woods of Ypres has had a huge impact on my life, and if a person lives as long as he is remembered, then David Gold will live until I die, and longer.

I read somewhere that when life seems to be going well we enjoy the music, and when life presents some challenges, we listen to the lyrics. I often when I hear sone song think, I was supposed to hear those words this moment. 1 want to believe , that there is another dimension after this life that we only know about. I am not in any hurry to get there. Until That time we all are responsible to seek balance in all our health dimensions !( physical, emotional, intellectual, social snd spiritual). I am comforted to know that David is in your heart and in your loving soul. ❤️😁☀️

To Esther Gold and the woods community. I know it’s ten days before David left this world but I feel now is the right time to post this comment. I discovered this band about late September of this year. And learned about this great band. And I would like to say David has help me and I can say this many in this community with mental problems or coping with loss or just the struggles of every day life when I ever have a bad day I will sit and listen to Woods of Ypres. David just knew what to say his words speak to many people not just that but I can now say this band is tied with my favorite band of all time. But we are not here to talk about that. I would like to thank Esther Gold on her still communicating with the community. And I can say that for all and finally I as I right this I’m listening to Grey sky’s and Electric light and listening to Davids words and he’s right when he said “We miss them now so much that they are gone. Took them for granted for living so long. We read words again and listen to them again as we start to understand what they where trying to say” now we all understand Rest In Peace David you will be missed.

And Paradise Lost had a few less than stellar albums before they came back to the doom metal fold. Thankfully the last couple have been much less synthpop and more back on form. I do find that these three bands resonate with me. There's nothing else that helps me unwind better than music from one of them if I'm stressed, can't sleep or am having trouble focusing. I used to listen to Shades of God before job interviews, it always left me calm and at ease, ready to go. Edit: I'd have to give an honourable mention to Children of Bodom too. Not quite the same thing, but an excellent band nonetheless!

I remember listening to this band when they were not known that well. Woods of Ypres video's on youtube not even reaching 30K views and now 2.6 million views! I wished David was still wish us... It broke my heart when I saw heard he died :/

I didn't know this man was dead. The song took on an entirely different meaning whenever I found out. I can't stop listening to it. I started crying. My uncle hasn't got a gravestone. This world took everything from him and left him for dead and didn't even give him a gravestone. This song is kind of like a gravestone. It'll be far better than anything I'll ever get.
