To be honest, if it eats any form of protein, it is likely to eat meat. Even cows (known herbivores) eat baby chicks. I've seen a squirrel gnaw a baby chick alive as it completely ate it whole from squirming victim to nothing but bone and leftover organs. Birds are well documented scavenger-type opportunistic carnivores.

To be fair to Dark, there are morons who actually force their cats (and other carnivorous animals) to be vegan, which pretty much kills the cat. 95% of the time it's sarcasm, but there's always that 5%..

Use a nest box with a steel plated entrance. That should stop them woodpeckers.

I am certain that they know. But there is a fundamental difference between an animal being swiftly predated and having animals suffering for extended time periods under torturous conditions. And the amount of "Torture" as you probably self-proclaimed vegans believe in is quite the lowest problem that animals in meat farms face. Besides, i love how you claim it is murder when aninmals do the exact same thing: Kill to survive.

@@deathkey8108 I am not a vegan or a vegetarian. But I am prepared to be paying more for meat that is farmed responsibly. There are ways animals are being kept, which are simply horrific. We are talking about mammals with highly developed nervous system and the capacity to suffer. A bit of empathy goes a long way.

Brin The Kid These animals are wild and have the right to live where they want. Even if we move an individual (like the woodpecker), another one will probably move in on the territory. This is not the solution. Yes, nature is cruel, but, it's nature. All we can do is help by minimising humans’ negative impact on wildlife. We, immediately, put a metal front on the box after the tragedy, and will suggest to the company that sells the boxes to reinforce the fronts with metal in the future.
