WOODEN CANOE | Solo wild camp - Norfolk Broads, River Thurne & Hickling

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

A paddle in my hand build wooden canoe. The trip is about 13 km from LUDHAM, Norfolk to HICKLING HEATH on the northern trip of Hickling Broad with a solo overnight wild camp in my Zephyros one person tent.
Plenty of beautiful Norfolk country side to look at and magnificent bird life feature in this video. Grey lag geese, Cetti's and Reed warblers, Black birds and a murder of crows!
A windy second day is a challenge to get across Hickling broad.

So peaceful.I find the broads a bit like the M25 in summer, so canoeing/Kayaking , you can escape a bit, down the arms and back waters. My only fear from my Kayak, is meeting a fen raft haha. Snakes fine, but hate spiders .

I've seen much wildlife. Snakes, birds, deer...even otters. I think human powered craft are the way to see them👍🏻🚣🏻‍♂️

Finely balanced, the gurgling of the water providing a pleasant soundtrack. The 'leave no trace' message is key and you have done very well. Congratulations.

Love watching these wild camping videos Andrew! The camera angles and videography is amazing! I am getting an inflatable kayak next week so when i am back up in Norfolk I will definitely be doing some of the routes you have done! Is there any part of the broads u partially like which is quite and good for wild camping? Thanks a lot, Ben

Thanks once again to you Ben for your support. Good luck with the new canoe. Honestly, most of the Broads have lots of opportunities to wild camp, but perhaps River Ant has more wooded banks. I'll watch out for you over the next few weeks....

RAPIDS!!!! Thankfully not too many of them here in Norfolk. I think the question may be which do I prefer, wooden or inflatable?! All canoes are great. Thanks Sheila for watching.

Who does the drone shots! they add an interesting dimension to the video. Also do you know Simon the guy in the woods? he does a similar channel, wondered if you may do a joint video at some point or a group camp out with other like minded adventurers...

The drone is "selfie"! Sometimes a challenge! Yes I watch Simon, it would be a great idea and a privilege to do a joint video.... But I don't think he knows who I am..... I'm just an amateur!

Thanks Mike for your comment. There is good access parking at Ludham, off Horsefen Road (main village) you can also get in the water at Ludham Bridge. But the parking is limited in terms of number of spaces. At Hickling, there is a reasonable sized car park with good access. I wish you well with your trip and thanks for watching

A question, please... I know that the wind proved a problem but would you say that a kayak would handle the Broads conditions better than a canoe (lower centre of gravity versus the waterline, single paddle but less storage volume etc.)? I'm attracted to the notion of using a kayak in the Broads in the manner you have done with wild, but responsible, camping.

  • @divum

Yes, in my opinion a kayak would be better. I think, if I had stowed my equipment better and moved forward, I could have mitigated some of the effect of the wind.

Looking at your boat, the hull looks roughly symmetrical so maybe sit on the other seat and paddle stern first. Loading most of your gear up front. That looks like it will put you more central in the boat (better trim). I always do this paddling solo and put 10 litres of water upfront too.

  • @divum

Great Tip. Thanks. One bad thing about my canoe is the fixed seat. I wish I could move it fwd. Any how it's always great fun!!! Thanks
