Hi Doug. Much Love & thanks from Sweden =). I'm a bit new with carving but I love it already. Why is this project specific with basswood? It's really hard to find it here in Stockholm. The best I can find here is sprucewood. It's not a big help when I go to our Lumber store, they cant help and know nothing about wood sadly :-/. My wish is to move to the woods with my little family and learn everything about it. But for now, I watch your clips and try to get as much information out of you as I can =D.

Another time a book has beaten the Internet. Sometimes the good old ways are best kept alive. Brilliant carving projects for the oldest to the newest to carving. 3 years ago thus was made. Took its time getting here(West Scotland). Off to give this a try. Thanks for showing how it's done. 🏴😊👍
Thanks for another great video. I'm a beginner, but your videos have helped me immensely. I wanted to share a photo of the book you mentioned; but I can't add a pic. I think it is E.J. Tangerman's Whittling and Woodcarving from 1936. A few months ago, I saw this book at an antique mall but did not buy it. I thought about it a lot and how I always wanted to whittle. So I went online and purchased a new book on whittling and two Beavercraft kits (a comfort bird and a wizard). On Thanksgiving day, I carved the comfort bird and loved it. A couple of days later, I carved the wizard. I love my new hobby, so I went online and found some videos, and yours are my favorite. I've done a couple of pocket penguins and a couple of owls that are similar. I am starting a collection of video projects for the future, and that's how I came across this puzzle video. I did go back this weekend and buy that book that started it all. After watching this video and when you said the book was written in the 30s, I looked at the book for the first time, and puzzles very similar are included. Thanks for all the advice and helpful hints. I love how you explain things as you carve along (shadows, smoothing edges, etc). I did heed your warning about wearing a glove (even though I dislike the feel) and it saved my finger while carving a Moravian star. I learned a lot about cutting different angles across the grain (on my second one) but the first one snapped in two when I tried to make a deep stop cut with the grain and the knife slammed into my finger hard... bruised but not cut. Thanks again. Respect. rj
Carving and coffee tutorials are my favorite but I love these. Couple of great fireside projects for me. Amazing yhat the wood doesnt split with those. Thanks for sharing Doug !
Doug ..you are a natural with the camera ...your videos just make me realize that we carvers need more men to doing carving videos ..Iam loving your style my friend

Doug, me and my two sons really enjoy this “weekly whittle “ set that you are doing! We are having a blast , and making a huge mess, mimicking these projects. It has also gotten them even more interested in bushcraft and woodsmanship. Thank you so much and keep doing what you do! It’s definitely made a difference in my house! Ps, they loved the captive ball idea. Of course I have to do some sharpening now. But seriously, thanks bud!

Valentine’s Project is next! Thank you Doug! I’ve done two projects that have turned out pretty good if I do say so myself. Ha. You are a great teacher!!! Merry Christmas!🎄
You're a wizard, Harry!
Doug have a go at this method. Put the smaller piece in boiling water for a couple of minutes you can then remove it and compress one end in a vice. Once it has been pushed through the hole it will cool and dry and expand back to its original size locking it in place. Thanks for all the inspiration, I have just had a go at your five minute wizard (santa) from a 1" pine dowel and now on to a lime rainbow trout (will post on Instagram and tag you. All the best. Hello Doug! What a cool project! Thank you for sharing. I recently discovered your channel and I love watching your videos because you have a very pedagogical significance. I do some whittling myself and you really inspire me to new projects. Now, I came to think. I know that basswood (linden) is a soft type of wood that is very well suited for carving. Since I don't really have direct access to basswood, I was thinking about using willow wood because I have a big white willow tree on my property. The willow wood is also soft and I though that I might have similar properties to the basswood. Have you any experience with carving in willow?
Another great one!

Awesome projects thanks Doug! At the moment there are not a lot of recent carving vids being posted so excited your doing them. I’ve carved the ‘Ball in a Cage’ and although tricky I was happy with the outcome. One question, whenever I see you carve the wood seems to go like butter...I am using basswood and I have high quality new knives and chisels so not sure why I’m struggling. Did it get easier the more you did because hand strength improved? Is it possible my source of basswood is kiln dried? Would it matter if it was? Maybe even a tiny sample of your basswood to compare might help clear it up? Any thoughts would be most appreciated, thanks.

hi doug, been trawling through your videos for a while now. I'm finally starting this Weekend. hopefully an owl or a ball in a cage! do you think it would be possible to use the same principle in this video but to use a much bigger and thicker pieces? maybe 6x2 sized timber. was thinking if its possible, would make an awesome personal gift for someone as hand made art! thanks for all of your videos 👍
