I've really come to love watching your videos. Any of them. You're a natural on camera, and I love the fact that it's not all super-rehearsed and "perfect." You're not just some guy showing his skills, you're like - I don't know, - everyone's friend, just trying to help us all get better. I appreciate that very much, and by the comments here I'm not alone in that. In a world that is going to heck in a handbasket, it's amazingly wonderful to find someone that's just down to earth, with no agenda, just sharing things he loves with other people. Thank you. Thank you very, very much.

I'm overly pleased to say that I made a 75 minute (each way) trip west of Chicago today and bought a FlexCut 3 knife pack with a stick of compound, on sale for $41.29. I had been following along with your videos using nothing but regular chisels I sharpened razor sharp. I bought a CHEAP set of carving tools from Harbor Freight for like $10 and it came with a "V" tool and 2 gouges, along with a couple chisels and that angled chisel you just showed (that I forgot the name of). Granted, those cheap tools took some elbow grease to get sharp blades and I had to remove all the tools from the handles, drill deeper and even, and epoxied them back together properly. They work great now. I had been wondering what the best, minimal tools were and, fortunately, I now have the ones you recommended and then some. You've been my sole inspiration and I watch your videos regularly to learn and just watch.

Excellent... Info shared Doug, When I first started carving, MY Dad started me out with a modified blade on a Old Timer Pocket knife... I learned the basic with that and then moved into dedicated carving knifes, "V" tools and gauges... I feel you are spot on with start with the basic's....Be it a pocket knife or a carving knife... Just start and let you mind and time go by in some really good relaxation time. Once you learn which way you want to carve then invest in other tools. Thanks for starting out with the Basics of carving...

Doug, I just love your honesty and no nonsense approach, thank you, you are a true inspiration. 👍
Love that you started the video outdoors! Thank you for this overview. My aunt has been a wood carver and traveling instructor for years, and I’m now developing an interest. Can’t wait to get started!
Thank you for this, so helpful! Love your shelf of 'friends' behind you! Beautiful work
Great video Doug! This series is going to be very beneficial to the carving community!
This series is a great idea. Looking forward to the tool sharpening. Just getting started in carving. Lucky to have spotted your site. Thanks
Thanks for all the info Doug! Really helpful!
Thank you Doug you are one hell of a teacher
Looking forward to this series.
Great video man, really looking forward to this series..
Just fascinating. Loved it. Thnx
I like simple. Thanks, Doug!
Great job covering and simplifying the basics. Thank you Doug.
Really liking this new series. Thanks for sharing. Really.
You have the best videos, you explain things in a way that I “get”. Just listening to you is calming and I feel less overwhelmed. You are also an amazingly talented carver. Cudos
Enjoying these videos Doug. Great for beginners and good refresher for those who have a bit of experience. Thanks
Very informative. Thanks Doug! 👍😁
Great video, thanks for taking the time to put it together. Good job
Hi Doug, I love your videos. What I especially love about it is your laidback attitude, your knowledge and the fact that you don’t cut and add new video material in the middle of a sentence. Sometimes you’ll blend in a new topic, but that doesn’t bother me at all. Anyway, keep up the good woodwork. Greetings from the Netherlands!
Hi! I'm learning how to wood carve because I've been stuck for the past 6 weeks in the countryside because of covid. There's lots of wood lying around here and I was so surprised to find that the wood is gorgeous once the tree bark is removed!! So cool to connect with different people from myself over this!! Also great fabricville joke :-)
Good video doug enjoy your sunday its rainning here a good carving day if i wasnt playing catch up with my chores thanks again
Great video. I like how you went over everything and taught us the mistakes you made to keep us from making the same mistake. You got me into carving as there was no videos when I first was interested.
Pretty good video, you really went into the depth of the knives that I 'need' to know, you may have peaked my interest in carving now....Thanks Doug!
Doug, I have so much enjoyed watching your videos. You have peaked my interest in carving the little figurines. I've done plenty of spoons in the past, but I'd like to expand beyond that. Over Christmas break, I bought the 1 3/4 carving knife, a V tool and a small skew chisel. Look forward to trying this. Thanks again for these awesome videos!
Thank you so much, Doug! You make it look really simple when there's a lot of information out there. There's a bunch of kits with several knives, but it's too much to deal with in the beginning. 2 knives is sure enough!
Thanks for getting me into this hobby. It’s kept me sane during lockdown here in England. I really enjoy not so good but trying. All the best mate

Why are you locked down, are you on house arrest?
So glad I found your channel. Its been perfect for a beginner like me starting this new hobby during this COVID19 time
Inspired by Doug I went out this morning and found some wood for my first whittlings. I so hope I can create something worthwhile, we'll see.

I just came across my first carving project I ever carved. I was surprised it turned out as good as it did because I remember it being a complete disaster! Be sure to save those first carvings so you can look back on how far you have come. Enjoy!

@@robvegart Not sure what it is, it was a fallen branch. Anyway, I decided to hone my whittling skills by using a hatchet and Mora knife to turn some cherry branches into walking sticks. Man, it's so therapeutic
Another excellent video I like how you stress that the extra toys have their place but aren’t necessary.
"Tiny Eyes, Tiny Guys" is the name of my lo-fi alt rock garage band. Great videos btw. Just whittled away at my first stick in years.
Very helpful video. Love the outdoor scenery.🍁🍁🍁
Thank you for sharing your knowledge and explaining you don't have to break the bank to get started.
I was gifted carving tools for Christmas from my granddad. I've never carved. It's a lovely gift, I'd love to put them to use.
Hey Doug...wanted to thank you for your inspiring videos. I have watched all of them and am slowly acquiring the items needed to get going. My new knife arrived and I just had to play a bit to see how it felt in hand. So far, all fingers accounted for and I am looking forward to this new hobby. Keep up the great tutorials!!
Easy to follow, easy to listen to, casual and humble. You’ve inspired me in my initial carving experience.
Thank you Doug for the information you share. This is helping me progress in my hobby of woodcarving.
What a hoot. Now I am in my shop measuring blades. See what you’ve done! Ha. Glad you put out a basics video again. Thorough and helpful.
Thank you for sharing, I’m just now beginning to crave.. you’re so helpful
Your approach to teaching is exceptional. I have learned more in the last two videos I have watched then a good portion of what I have tried to learn over the last 20 years.
Another great video Doug Thanks
Great video as always Doug!
Thank you for making this look fun....it is...
Thank you for your videos. I've never even thought of learning to carve until I stumbled across your channel. So intriguing, some of the cutest little figures ever, and you make it look so simple. Your knowledge and your sharing of that knowledge and skill is most appreciated sir.
Thanks for starting right the beginning Doug, I’m just at the point of buying my first tools. Thanks🤗🌈
Thanks Doug. I'm late to the party but, 4 years later, this is easily one of the best introductions to the tools needed I've seen. Thanks again, subscribed )O(
Thanks Doug!!! Really enjoying this series!!! You nailed it. I need to put down the phone and pickup the knife😬
doug, youre awesome! thanks for everything!
Love your videos, been binge watching them. Also love the little bloke looking out of the tree at the beginning.
Thanks for the schooling. I enjoyed it. 😁👍
I totally want to make one of those ghosts. Thanks Doug! I got started with carving finally thanks to you.

White tail deer ( PS ) coffee time Doug thank you for your information topic on carving tools
🌲🍁🌿 that’s was a great video. I’ve wanted to try something like this for a while, but when I see all the tools it does look very daunting and so I’ve never bothered. This has set the record straight, thank you 🌿🌲🍁
