Let’s be honest here the wood burning ones are safer then gas ones provided you have your garden hose at the ready beside you and your not leaving it unattended. Propane fire pits have been known to blow up due to gas leaks and lack of maintenance. You can test for leaks with soap and water but eventually like anything else hoses, valves, regulators tend to degrade and wear out. Unless your testing it and checking your hoses and fittings every times you use it which unfortunately majority of people do not do then it becomes a ticking time bomb and it’s a matter of time. A wood fire pit gets a little out of control you can use your hose quickly. A propane fire pit gets a little out of control you try to shut it off but the flames maybe down there at the tank that you might not be able to shut it off you run far away before it blows and call the fire department. Propane leak can engulf blink of an eye quickly compared to wood. The only real threat with wood is sparks, embers and the base it sits on which can all be avoided with a proper fitting grate on top and sand and brick or stone underneath.
