Wood Violins Viper Review | Electric Violin Shop

Музыка

Electric Violin Shop staffer and long-time Viper player Matt Bell explains why he prefers the Viper on stage to any other violin and outlines several compelling reasons that you should too...
-The strap and chest support system provide security and freedom to move around and interact with audience and musicians on stage, as well as providing great positional flexibility and playing comfort.
-The cool looking 'flying V' body design is an attention getter that helps break the paradigm of what the audience expects a violin to look and sound like. The lack of an upper bout provides easy access to upper positions.
-Geared tuners are far superior to wooden friction pegs.
-Optional frets help you locate your notes on the fingerboard in situations where you may not hear well enough to always play in tune otherwise. The Viper's special low profile frets allow for vibrato and glissando.
-Most Vipers are equipped with a Barbera pickup--the Cadillac of violin pickups!
-Get a Viper in 4, 5, 6 or 7-strings

This is why I think 7 String Fretted Viper Violins are so much easier than a standard Violin especially for begginers, 1) the strap allows the instrument to hold you, 2) it's lighter weight, 3) the 3 additional strings facilitate transposition, 4) the geared tuning machines make it easier to tune, 5) the 24 frets along with the fret dots make it easier to find the notes, and 5 the solid flying V body adds a bit of rock n roll.

I'm an electric guitarist. I don't think I'm interested in a Viper because what they offer the violinist I already have (a rock vibe, lower pitch, and freedom of movement; which some non-shoulder-rest techniques appear to mitigate). Is the support bar that sits underneath the violin able to lay down flat or be removed easily? I'd like the ability to have the violin strapped to my back for when I'm not playing, and pull it up front when I'm ready for it. But I'm unsure with that support post and not knowing if it can be made lay flat. (I know it is necessary for support when actually playing but wondering where it can go when strapped to my back).

Similar and less expensive is the Line 6 G30, which is a belt pack that could attach as shown in the video. This instrument (7 Strings & Fretted version) is so much easier to learn on than a Standard Violin & Viola because 1) the 3 additional Bass Strings (C, F, & Bb) facilitate playing in every key, 2) the frets help find the notes, 3) the geared tuners facilitate tuning up & restringing (strings load into the tailpiece), & 4) you've got a Strap (like a Guitar). The Flying V shape also adds a bit of Rock n Roll to the mix.

It depends on number of strings, whether it has frets, which pickup it has... The most common configuration is a 5-string fretted with a Barbera pickup. Those prices, as of March 2023, start around $4200.

I would have said that isnt the only reason there is a bowt, surely a lot of people find that having one makes shifting positions easier (for someone used to a normal violin)

I actually like NOT having a bout. The thumb stop is in the same place. And if you're bumping the heel of your hand on the bout for third position, that's actually not ideal. I do understand that it's a little like flying without a net, but you get used to it very quickly, especially if the instrument is fretted. We had a customer special order a violin (not a Viper) with no bout and no thumb stop. Now THAT was a hard instrument to play.

Options include 4 to 7 strings, pickup (we recommend the Barbera pickup option), exotic tops and finishes, and frets. Electric Violin Shop The 7 String Fretted Viper can even be tuned as a 7 String Guitar which I did that (but down a whole step) by using Viola D'amore Strings made by Thomastik (Super Flexible for a bright steel string sound) so I could emulate the Reed Organ. The other neat thing about a 7 String Fretted Viper is you can use it to play Choral works by alot of composers making it the "Choir" of Violins which is why I call it a "Choirlin" cause it has the same range as a Choir.

Unlike a guitar the curved bridge and neck allow for individual strings to be bowed for sustained melodic playing. The timbre of the strings and of bowed strings in general, as opposed to strummed or picked guitar strings, is quite different as well. That said, the fretted Viper does let a violinist do a lot of guitar sounds and techniques .
