Wood Turning Impossible Connected Rings

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

I thought it would be cool to woodturn a goblet with connected captive rings. Connecting the rings together was more trick than magic, but it was cool watching them dance together on the stem of the goblet as it spun on the lathe, and it will be fun making people guess how they got intertwined!

Very cool. With my luck the ring would break when trying to put them together

nice. i did the same but i didn't cut the ring with the saw, i break the ring with my hands and then glue it with regular wood glue and so the broken part is not possible to see. (sorry for my bad english)

Nice work! A bit of constructive feedback is that you can see sanding marks in the cup of the goblet and the glue line in the ring, if you use a glue that doesn't soak in as much on porous timber like that, you won't see it as much, maybe a bit more sanding would get rid of it? Look in to some hooked ring scrapers too, you can get the rings really nice and round with them! As i said, not having a dig, just giving advice, ignore it if ya like! I still watch your videos!

Hi Drew, Nice goblet. There is a way to turn interconnecting captive rings. I have seen a video of it being done but not something I will ever try. Take care Drew. Cheers, Huw

Well done - i.e. making us watch to see how you interlocked the rings. Perhaps use a fine blade fret saw and hide the cuts in the grain next time? The cup itself ? Pleasant shape and nice wood, I like it😊 Thanks🙏 Stay safe. -Mike😷⏳

I greatly appreciate the effort you put in wood turning, let me give you a tip and a hint. The tip is simple, next time break the ring instead of cutting it, and chose the right spot to break it, that way you will break it following perfectly its grain and when you glue it back it will be almost invisible. The hint is to take a wood turning course or to buy and study some good instructional dvds, you have a great potential, but it will be completely disclosed only when you will learn to ride the bevel properly, riding the bevel will give you perfect control on the shape, it is the key of accurate and effortless turning, i have seen in your videos how you deal both with the grain parallel and perpendicular to the rotation axis and nor riding the bevel properly seems to be your main problem. Take my advice in a positive way, as I told I see some good potential in you, my goal is not to take you down, but to help you as I am convinced that you can do much better then now if you will learn that fundamental turning skill.
