I just got a Jotul F500 V3, with rear exit exhaust, which is mounted in front of my old fireplace insert, with the stainless flu going up the old flu. After using it for a couple months now my experience is that it works much better, gets hotter, and does so much faster, if I keep the ashes to a minimum. I do not ever, while it is being used daily, remove and empty the ash tray, because when you pull the tray out, hot ash from above falls into the void and the tray will not go back in place unless you remove the extra ash, which is nearly impossible without a vacuum... And I don't want to be vacuuming hot ash. So I use two metal buckets. I put a bunch of hot coals in the double bottom bucket and set aside. I get a larger metal bucket and fill it with the rest of the hot ash and set outside to cool off. I reinstall a small layer of the hot coals from the double bottom bucket and build my fire on top of them... Usually 4-5 strips of cedar bark right on top of the coals, front to back; then 3 larger cedar logs crossways. Then I'll put two smaller oak logs at a 45 on top of them (since they are 16"and too Long to do front to back-next year I'll cut 12" logs). This will get the stove up to 300 degrees in 30 minutes. Then I can reduce the air intake and add larger logs as necessary. Early on I left 2-3" of ash in the box, and it was difficult getting the stove up to 300... Now it gets there easily.

Can I ask you a few questions? I bought my 500 Oslo in 2014. It’s been great until this season. Burning too fast yet somehow it’s also not throwing the heat it used too. Nobody services Jotul in my area. Does the airflow system on top of the stove require replacement or servicing after a period of time?

I've used a jot 500 for over a dozen years now and they are a very good stove. It seems to burn far more efficiently than the 600 which I also have. We never open the front door on these stoves. They draw much better from the side door, plus you can load much longer pieces from the side. 22 inch for the 500 and 24inch for a 600. Also you don't get nearly as much blowback working the side versus the front. Just crack the door and the draft starts pulling, you can lay your start anyway you want.

Just bought a house with this same stove in it, my first wood stove. Still learning the ins and outs but already love it. Thanks for your insights on long-term ownership.

I have the 600 and really love it! I load most of my logs front to back oriented which keeps them from rolling against the front door. Also, depending on how cold it is, I can lay 4 logs wide or if I don’t need a lot of heat, I can lay 2 logs wide. I REALLY like that option and flexibility.

I have the same firewood bag works great. I've only had two fires in the stove and absolutely love it.

We love our Jotul. It has done a great job heating our home for years now.

Awesome video. Love jotul. We had a jotul no. 3. It was too small to heat our house and we got a brand new lopi liberty steel stove and man thing throws some heat. Really excited to use it for a full winter this year. Nothing beats a nice woodstove.

Matt how do you like the Lopi compared to the Jotul? Does it still hold heat when there are small coals? I love my Jotul, but I always smell a bit of smoke. Cats iron stoves have too many seams. I like the idea of a steel stove because the only seam is the door. Let me know how they compare. TIA, Joe

Yeah mine holds heat pretty decent I have an issue with my door seal hopefully nothing major think latch needs adjustment or better gasket cause I'm over firing a little and door isn't sealing fully. But I was getting at least 7 to 8 hour burn overnight and still had hot coals in morning and fired right back up

@@joeganusi8522 dealer I bought it from came and adjusted door latch to seal tighter seemed to fix problem. Our wood was cut to size for our old jotul 3 so wood is small for new lopi and extremely dry but it seemed to burn way better and controllable after door latch was tightened. We got new wood this year cut to proper size excited to see how it burns this year. Stove can take 24 inch east to west and 18 north and south so that will make big difference this year.

Very good info.I bought the new. Jotul 200.Also very good stove.Run 45% less wood then the old series 3.As you I start to fire on the top.

Tell us more about the comparison of F200 and F3. Have you had an F3 CB before? Does the smoke come out when the door is open?

So this stove is meant to burn full blast up to temp and the catalyst glows red. Then when the jets kick on you can adjust temp with the air lever I. Front of door. Once you get a bed of coals load the wood once and the. You don’t have to touch. It for at least 10 hrs.

How does this stove compare to the older steel stoves? We have to feed ours very often but it puts out great heat...

No reason to buy wood from Lowe’s to start a fire with 40 acres. I’m sure you have pine trees on hand. Stick a handful of pine needles under your wood with a few small scraps of dried pine kindling and the fire will roll. Nice fireplace build too.

I just got mine BUT I’m a little confused on how fast it would take for it to heat up in the house? I’m a beginner in this so please bare with me

I lived in the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont (-46F) and heated with wood...never saw that fire starting technique. We used to use tiny oak scraps that came cheap in a feed sack as the only kindling. Down here in NC, I'm going to make my own fat wood...even though this is Lowes hometown. Thanks.

The strap was a good idea, it took some of the pressure off of your bucket lip. My forks have a wood 2x4 set vertical in those pockets at the base of your forks and they help you imagine where your forks are. Great video! Are you burning walnut?

How does this stove compare to older iron or metal stoves?

Having had the V3 installed for awhile now, have you run into any issues with it? If so, what?

I have a similar one I’m guessing older model tho the front glass frame is slightly different but totally same all the way around

Nice stove but keep an eye on your combust or. Heard some reports of failures and warping.

The Jotul F500 Oslo is our second Jotul (after our old Jotul #6) and we're happy with it. However, I watch the Jotul F500 Oslo on KZread and they all have very clean window. That's not the case for us. After a few hours of operation, the window turns dark gray and we can't see the fire anymore. What should we do to correct the situation? Our wood lighting is like most of those on KZread, but unlike them, with a flame that burns upwards, our flame comes back towards the glass and that's where the grey deposit (soot) builds up on the glass and prevents us from seeing the fire. Thank you for your suggestions.

Too long, put the fat wood on the bottom then build up. Wranglerstar thinks the knows everything.

You don’t use side door to load wood ?

Do the ashes actually fall down into the ash pan or do you have to let the fire burn out and remove them?

Why would you want to remove the tubes? No need to clean them inside, just brush them off outside. You can remove the top and clean off the blanket if you think you need to.

You really should cut back the Air Supply earlier. I know you were just doing a demonstration but your stove should have been a heck of a lot hotter with all the wood you put in there.

How economical it is and what the price is

I backed my truck into garage. Attached engine hoist to stove and raised off truck. With stove in air moved truck and lowered stove onto cart and wheeled to house. No tractor needed. Heavy stove though. Sorry to see all that walnut go up in smoke.

Sounds like that worked out well for you. We use what we have to make it work. This stove has worked fantastic for us for the last couple years now and it is our primary source of heat. Super efficient. The black walnut was a rotting tree that had been down a while out in the woods and was unusable for anything else. We also have 40+ and still counting Black Walnut trees on our property that we are getting Walnut sap to make syrup from and I also will be milling some of them up on our Woodmizer sawmill. Yes. Once the fire is going strong, I like to use the longer pieces.

Also, once your fire is going and stack temperature (that’s where you should have your magnetic thermometer) is up to temp….put in larger wood. Give it five or so more minutes and close front damper. Secondary burn action will begin.

Are you burning black walnut as your larger pieces?

There may have been... unfortunately. We have quite a bit of black walnut on our property and I think there was one downed tree that I cut up for firewood that may have been one. I now have my Woodmizer Lx25 sawmill and am making sure the good stuff goes to the mill instead of the wood stove.

In 2021 that was a 3000$ stove.. That stove today retails for 4700$.

If you close in on the door to a few inches open while the fire is coming up, it will create a circular breeze in the firebox for better turbulence.

Is that WALNUT, you are burning in it?

This is not how to light a fire 😂 Start it once and let it burn down before adding.

Exactly. Top down does not work well, too slow. You want a fast and hot fire. Minimal smoke.

Why do people keep supporting Amazon?

no offense but they ripped you off!!! a woodstove is the easiest thing to install. not to mention you didnt need double wall pipe the whole way just through the home where its going through the roof. a fool and their money are soon parted. if you are gonna burn wood just take the time to learn how to cut, split and maintain it. oh and get yourself a double axel wheel cart you can bring in a weeks worth the wood.

If you are going to have the pipe going very close to the wall, you sure do, unless you want to burn your house down! If not, then uninsulated pipe is fine. It is pretty easy, but I can see in his case, running all that huge pipe up through the roof is a bigger project. For $600 I would have not even had a second thought about having that done. Here, local stove place wants $850 to install a wood stove into an existing liner--basically just put on a new T-pipe end and screw it in. A wheel cart, really? I have the same Kubota tractor he does, and cut and split my wood from my 80 acres. Even with the tractor, I use an open 8 x 4.5 foot trailer that I attach to my car to bring wood to the house. It holds just enough when it's overfilled (just over half a cord) to refill my woodpile against the house. I have to repeat that about 8 times during the winter for the 4.5 or so cords I burn to heat it for the year.

So wat you took some rocks from outside wy dont u do sometin useful and donate to peta
