I just pushed play on this wonderful sister's video and heard her say, "90's" and my 60 - year - old - ass almost lost a decade!! Figuring (like most narcissistic men) that I was the first to . . . well I'm sure you all get it. She probably got more comments on that than her paneling! Well I guess I should see if her knowledge of DIY is better than that of popular American history.

I`ve done this technique many years ago. It worked and it was very satisfying once the job was complete. Although, it is very labor-intensive. In my case i had to do 3 coats of the compound to have the perfect smooth look I was after, which means sanding 3 times crack by crack and clean in depth due to the dust of sanding and please prime before applying your paint. If you want to save some money it is a great way to do it but if I may, i would recommend doing one room at a time so you can determine if it is worth your time and effort to do this and also block the doorway and anything you do not want dust to get into with plastic or something (heater, lighting, light switch, outlets etc..) because you will find dust in places you never imagined could penetrate. lol P.S. Bryan Collins, I live in a mobile home as well and if your foundation isn`t concrete, i imagine your home must shift during temperature changes like mine, (I live in Canada, very cold weather in winter) if so, you may get cracks in your walls. I did. just a little heads up. :) Your wall looks great Mia. Good job. :)

Overall GREAT TRANSFORMATION! FYI's for reference It's called a drywall knife (not a spatula). Always clean the panelled walls prior to priming with a vinegar and water solution to remove any smoke or grime. Allow to dry overnight. (Solvents in other cleaners may react with the paint) Priming prior to painting is best for proper adhesion, especially on a panelled surface which is slick. If primer isn't used any slight tap on the wall can cause paint to chip off very easily! Also make sure proper drying time is allowed between mudding to let the gas escape or your paint will bubble and remember drywall compound does shrink and may require a second application. Sand in between applications for smoother surface. And it is a pole sander 👍 Also when staining over a finished wood (sealed with polyurethane) you need to use a gel stain, a standard stain cannot penetrate polyurethane. Panelled walls are 50's.

Warning for people attempting this. Wood expands and shrinks over the years and with temperature changes. The filling might crack up. It would be interesting to see a follow-up of this video if it still looks any good. Edit: I realised she did an update. Seems like it went ok

Amazing work!!!! I visited a restaurant that I have visited for at least 20 years. In the interim, they renovated the place. One of the walls is a brick wall and the best renovation is how they cleaned the brick and polyurethaned it. It has a nice gloss and looks so fresh. I'm planning to do that to the brick around my fireplace. That may be a nice touch in your newly renovated living room. Good luck!!!

Thank you. I have paneling in my basement. My house was built in the 90s. I think the style is definitely older looking, but I guess some people still liked it later. I will have to try what you did to your room.
