I also went into this movie with no expectations. My girlfriend and I went to see it this evening because we had a gift card that was about to expire. I loved every minute of it. I actually had a moment of realization about halfway through the film in which I realized how much I was enjoying my time at the theater just taking it all in. I haven’t had that experience in a long time.

I hope every Christmas we get feel good winter movies like The Holdovers, Wonka and The Greatest Showman instead of those cheap Hallmark Christmas romcom that's getting silly and boring. The movie was supposed to come out back in March and honestly seeing the trailer and the concept of what King is doing, I'd say it's best that they moved the movie to December in anticipating Christmas. I can't wait to see the movie

I dont know about all of you, but this movie (with all its flaws), was great! It is such a feelgood movie. No pandering, just pure whimsical, magical atmosphere. I also came to see it expecting to hate Timothy's acting. But, even that suprised me. He was just very endearing and cooky. Every actor was perfectly cast. People laughed, people cried, and after the movie was done I saw people around me just had this lil cute smile. It is a much needed movie this season. I absolutely love it.

Instead of casting actual actors with Dwarfism for the oompa loompas, they did a freaky CGI Hugh Grant. That's utterly disgusting and shameful to me, and guess what? It looks like they're going to be doing the same thing for the Disney Snow White live action remake.

As a brit, it’s so cool to see a lot of mainstream British comedians in the limelight for a larger audience. Mathew Baynton who was on a show called horrible histories during my upbringing is in this and that’s so cool for me personally. Obviously rowen Atkinson is well known but it’s nice to see him in another large project and Matt Lucas was also another standout for me growing up. I feel like the US doesn’t get the same exposure to British TV and film as we do to the US’s. Hence why a lot of you suck at our accents 😂

To be fair, your accents disrespect consonants and vowels. You just straight up leave out certain letters like R and T from words. We Americans actually enunciate each and every vowel and consonant, thus American English is actually more accurate to what's written (excluding certain regions like Boston, NY and places with distinct American accents, but just the general American accent is what I'm referencing). Your silly accents make no sense.

Went today to see Wonka . I didn’t want to see it . But my MoviePass’s credits went over 80 so I needed to lose a few because once you hit 100 it gets impossible to use your credits effectively during movie droughts which happen a lot lately .. I LOVED Wonka ! I had fun. I was just completely taken aback with how light hearted and touching it was .. it wasn’t stiff or pretentious.. I enjoyed the music and the dance numbers immensely . Which is odd because I swore off musicals .. I found myself crying towards the end .. I was so moved ..this made me feel light and childlike .. this reminded me what it was like to be young, naive and optimistic and having life come crushing down on you ..He is passionate and relentless and it really comes through so well. I highly recommend it for anyone who has a touch of whimsy and a need to reconnect for childhood

However, while I agree he doesn't play charismatic roles very well, Timothée is at his best playing characters who are young, out of their element, and vibrant with energy. Hence, I enjoyed his performances in Call Me By Your Name and Bones and All. This energy draws me to his portrayal of Wonka since he was described with endless energy through gestures and handshakes in the book. Though Timothée's attractiveness helps him get roles, his career would plummet if he weren't talented, being solely an actor.

In this dark age of pandemics, wars, and abnormal weather, this film offers the sweet hope of a "dream". Although it is a classic musical, it is directed by Paul King of "Paddington" fame. The charming characters, well thought-out foreshadowing, and various other elements are melted down and solidified to provide the best Christmas movie ever made. Just came back from the theater and I agree 100% with your review. It's a silly yet adorable, feel good movie. I specially loved the fact that the villains were never perceived as dangerous so you were always at ease, not feeling dreaded at any moment, even though they attempted literal murder. That's not easy to pull off. Wonka was also ignorantly naive and positive and his great spirits were passed onto you. Timothee absolutely killed the performance, I also had doubts going into it after watching him on Dune and his okay-ish performance. I got pleasantly surprised by his great acting on this movie.

So I was thinking Paul King's probably got this one. And it sounds like I may be right!

I laughed, I cried multiple times, I wanted to sing. This was one of the most magical experiences I have ever had in a theatre. Timothee Chalamet played the sheer mania of Willy Wonka perfectly, and the supporting cast was packed with comedic geniuses. It was bizarrely political, but in a delightfully farcical way. No hammers over the head. If you haven’t seen it, see it. If you have seen it, see it again.

One thing I haven’t seen many reviewers bring up is the incredible voices in this cast. I would love to see more films casting people for their unique voices. A very underrated part of acting. I’d rather a cool voice than a pretty face every time.

I normally can't be arsed, but out of the blue I connected to THIS GUY cos I was looking for reviews on Wonka/Timothee'/British cinema and whilst I was listening to him I generally surmised that he cared about what he was saying, and gradually I cared more about the review. The review was very kind and intelligent, and I thought: I actually wouldn't mind seeing this (Wonka). I would probably only go to the cinema to watch this because I liked the review (by this guy). Good review. Well spoken without interruption. Very well spoken. I have to say as a Brit, Americans speak very very well about what they care about. They're better than we are, purely on their articulation of the language. OUR language!! BUT also (obviously) THEIR language. They, on the whole though (after many decades of tv), actually speak better than we do. Anyway, good review. Well articulated.

I have to say, I find it weird when people dunk on Tim Burton's Wonka movie. I personally never minded it, as I found it as off the wall and weird as something you'd expect from a Roald Dahl book. And his work tended to be pretty fantastical as it was! Maybe because everyone was so attached to the 1971 film (and Gene Wilder's, RIP, iconic portrayal). Thing is, Burton wasn't remaking that film, and Johnny Depp wasn't doing an impersonation of Wilder. It was its own film that takes its own twist on the source material, and I was okay with that. It's better than Burton's Alice In Wonderland movie, THAT'S for sure!

The one thing that made the original film adaptation memorable was... Gene Wilder. His version of Wonka wasn't just a whimsical character full of life and joy here to spread goodwill through candy... there was a slightly crazed and sinister side to him as well. A live action Mad Hatter, a trickster who could do real damage when dolling out punishment if you were naughty and crossed him, all while devilishly enjoying your torment. And those filmmakers went with that... even showing some of his madness during the scene with the rather trippy ride in the boat with a vision of a chicken getting beheaded. They should have kept that somewhat darker tone and black humor in this prequel as well.

  • @Jumpyfoot

    @Jumpyfoot

Gene Wilder said one of his conditions for joining that movie was that they keep the scene with the cane when he emerges from the factory and then does a forward roll in front of the crowd because from then on you never knew whether Willy Wonka was telling the truth. I always liked that.

  • @dan_hitchman007

@@Jumpyfoot Yup... that's what I meant by a trickster. Watch Wilder's subtle facial expressions when he's watching the kids. There is a sly bit of malevolence in his glances. He's not exactly a good guy. This prequel was supposed to be based on Gene Wilder's version of Wonka, but they play the role safe and don't explore his dark side.

Anyone else think this movie was crappy? Wonka had no mysterious witticisms like the original, if anything it was a precursor to the depp movie- which I didn’t enjoy that much. I had really hoped that they would do justice to the original film but of course that didn’t happen. They had to make it too poppy- and nothing original about it. I think it would have been better if they had a plot with a darker and mysterious/ wondrous/ imaginable undertone, much like the wilder version. This one was not that. And I think that’s what true wonka fans want- a trip back to their childhood- with less flat casting and. Someone at least comparable to gene wilder’s personality/ character.

From the trailer I was someone who thought the movie was unnecessary & Timothy a miscast yet I was totally surprised. Timothy was great & a unique Wonka which is what we need. Great to see Wonka in his early days instead of a remake for the third time. Some funny characters & Noodle story added to Wonka's nicely. Hugh grant also made a hilarious oompa loompa. The songs weren't the most memorable although a select few were good. Overall the movie provides a nice magical feel to it which is lacking in current movies. Overall 7.5/10 & now my 2nd best Wonka movie behind the original 1970's.

I actually loved it. Some part of me was trying to remind me that I didn’t care, but the movie is so incessantly charming and fun, I kept finding myself caught up in it and laughing at the surprisingly funny moments. I didn’t cry, but I was damn close during the last ten minutes or so. It wasn’t perfect. Some of the humor fell flat for me, and the acting of the young girl was noticeably one-note. And I felt it could’ve been 10-15 minutes shorter. But none of that stuff will stick with me. I’ll remember this movie for a long while. It was extremely fun and I’d love to watch it again someday.

But nevertheless I gave the movie a chance and I’m really glad I did. I enjoyed the whimsical nature of it, and I could tell it was more family friendly by that and the pacing. It was enjoyable to see this character in a different setting and situations and I really liked the songs too. I got a little teary eyed at a few moments during the film and that at the end full on had a cry with the sung message of “imagination is your liberation.” Honestly I’d love to watch it again and will definitely be listening to the soundtrack 👏🏽☺️

Am I right in presuming though it’s a prequel it’s not connected to the Wonka from old movies? As his back story seemed much darker and more twisted and I’d presume this more happy go lucky (seemingly) character wouldn’t be a full prequel connected to the older works?

Chris Stuckmann saw a movie and has nothing but positive things to say about it. Which movie is this? His reviews are all the same these days.

Thanks for the review! I tought it was the best Disney vives of the Disney's movies done this year... and it's not a Disney movie. Some directors and excecutives from that company should see it and learn a lot of pacing an humor for movie made to be entretained.

Nothing will ever top Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. That being said, I don't have a problem with their being another Willy Wonka movie as long the writer and director's heart is in the right place. Watching your review has really encouraged me to go see this when it comes out.

This movie is actually great especially seen through the lense as a prequel to the gene wilder classic - this film will bring audiences in again and again and I shead a tear too at the end and don’t care
