Wonders of the Mind | The Clairvoyants | TEDxVienna

We have all felt a connection to another person at some point in our lives. That's a real thing. It's not in our imagination. It's something that can occur between any two people - even strangers. Two people who have never even met before can share a connection. And that's exactly what the Clairvoyants (Thommy Ten and Amélie van Tass) demonstrate in their performances! The Clairvoyants were awarded “The German Champions of Mentalism”, “Magicians of the Year 2015” and were chosen as the “World Champions of Mentalism 2015-2018”. In 2016 they took part in the biggest talent show in the world, “America’s Got Talent”. America voted them second place. In April 2017 the Academy of Magical Arts & The Magic Castle Hollywood awarded Thommy Ten & Amélie van Tass "Stage Magicians of the Year 2016" for their extraordinary art. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

    I don't know, but there is something special about clairvoyants. I've had the privilege in separate times of had meetings with clairvoyants while staying in the UK and they where spot on. I clearly remember one of them told me "fortunes awaits you in Jamaica" Lo and behold I am witnessing !!!

    @just another human I dont know what kind of academic credibility an author of a book with that kind of title possesses scientifically, but I have been to Xian, China, one of the worst polluted areas in the world. In fact, I've lived there for 3 years. The air pollution levels are so high to the point of me not being able to see very far sometimes on winter, and a constant gray sky from the microparticles. I am completely fine, and so were they before the outbreak. Your explanation not only ignores all discoveries about vaccinations, but also fetches evidence from what seems to be a pseudoscientific source. Pandemics occur quite regularly, if you didn't know, to predicting one isn't that hard, since eventually, there is going to be one.

    When the female volunteer makes the joke that she thought "Brad Pitt would come" gives us a little bit of insight into how the audience perceives the performance and how important scripting in narrative is on the stage. There was no reason or logic given to this selection process. I also thought it would become part off the routine they did. all in all a bit clunky. Could do with a director like so many other magic acts.

  • @HayleydeRonde

    @HayleydeRonde

    The selection was testing. Seems to me their response to asking the audience raising their hands would have prompted both to raise their right, they were checking for hand dominance also, so the act illusion would not fail. The touch is a slight of hand thread trick. Its still amazing to watch, it takes utter skill to pull it off so seamlessly.

  • @hawk_202

    @hawk_202

    @@HayleydeRonde they werent checking for dominance they were looking for a good match, not everybody is as tapped in so they go person to person if they raise the correct hand and then think of the correct celeb they use that person. if they raise the wrong hand and say a different name they would move on knowing that person isnt a good match/isnt tapped in and wont pull off the act. once they find somebody who they can predict then hand and the celeb they think of they know theyre connected and the trick will work, they even get the 2 members to mirror eachother at the start forming a mental/psychic connection. The people synch up just like a flock of birds Its just like hypnotism, some people just wont allow it to happen so selection is important. There is no trick here unles they have used stooges.............. there really are subtle psychic energies than can be picked up to perform this act. its just a matter of selecting the right people as many would not feel the impulses at all and ruin the trick/act alltogether. this particular trick is done all the time its the lowest possible level of psychic ability hence why celebs and random people on the street can pull it off. the people doing the trick really do feel the touches of the other person we are all more connected than most think.

    With magic tricks, ask yourself questions about anything that seems out of the ordinary or forced. The answers reveal the secret to the magic trick. Q: Why do the cards with the words have to go in the box? A: So that they can be replaced by a 2nd set of cards without the audience noticing. Q: Why does she hurry the volunteer when he is looking at the cards? A: So he doesn't memorize them. Q: Why does he have to close his eyes when picking a card out of the box? A: So he doesn't see that the cards have been replaced and they are all the same now - "hairspray." Q: Why does the female volunteer have to put her fingers in her ears even though the man is asked to silently read the card to himself without saying it out loud? A: She doesn't, it's just an excuse for the magicians to get her to keep thinking about her head and her hair. They keep referencing things like that. "I can see you've got a lot going on up there." "Reach over onto his head" "Use your feminine intuition" (and magician makes a flowing hair movement with his hands) "If you can come up with a couple of letters (pronounces it let-HAIRS)" "Stand over HAIR, right tHAIR" "Put your fingers in your ears, so you don't HAIR anything" Do you have a word? Something with HAIR? Oh okay weird let's see. Lolz

    @@traveltalesbykavi I haven't seen that exact trick on AGT but I saw a bunch of their other tricks and they seem to mostly to rely on some variation of post-knowledge and a reveal of something that is supposedly sealded in advance. For example, "tell me the name you were thinking." "Iris" "Now look in this locket around my neck, where I wrote something down before the show." (It says Iris). Wouldn't be surprised if it was something like that.

    The entertainment value of mentalism, like magic, is in wondering how it is done. What is not entertaining to me is when people believe there is a supernatural process at work. Decades after James Randi exposed Peter Popoff, there are still people who would gladly send money to fraudsters on TV who claim to heal the sick by channeling their god through a touch on the forehead. This act isn't claiming to heal the sick, and they're not bilking vulnerable people out of their pension checks, but their success relies heavily on exploiting people's vulnerability to supernatural claims. It's entertaining to watch a cat chase a laser beam across the floor because we don't expect more of the cat, but I don't get why TED would think an act like this fulfills their motto, "ideas worth spreading."

    TED's organisers are human beings and these guys are well talented enough to trick anyone even scientists. I wonder who is going to solve this puzzle.

    Sorry if you are a fan, but this is a staged performance with two paid actors. There is no trick or anything, purely staged. It would be more clear if we take a closer look at Howie's impression on AGT that year. Howie acted so bad, or in other words, he didn't like to act. When he got surprised of something, you can see there's a different impression of his.
