Women vs Feminism: do we all need liberating from the gender wars?

There has never been a better time to be a woman: girls outperform boys at every level in education, the gender pay gap has been largely eliminated and women face no barriers to taking the top jobs. And yet, a new generation of feminists insist that women suffer a constant onslaught of sexual harassment and everyday sexism. There are calls to ban adverts, songs and behaviour like 'manspreading' or 'mansplaining' in the name of protecting women. But is it right to portray women as vulnerable to cheesy come-ons, bad language and banter? In this fascinating debate, we learn how the new feminism risks rolling back the clock on women's freedom.
Filmed at the Battle of Ideas 2017, the speakers are Joanna Williams, Helena Morissey, Eszter Kovats and Alison Wolf. The chair is Sally Millard.

@19:50 is she arguing that women cant have it all. So there is more work to do?... Men cant have it all. But life is unfair for women because they cant either? Why is it men are held to their choices, but women are the victims of having to make one?...

All of the rhetoric and controversy over this feminism issue is part of a much deeper problem. But, it is the result of the constant bombardment and culture indoctrination saturating our society from the SJW Leftist and radical feminist. Who's main agenda is to spew out propaganda through educational institutions, TV/movie industry programming, commercials, and electronic mainstream media in order to indoctrinate young boys and "shame them" of their natural masculine traits & become effeminate_ more like girls, and tell young girls that their natural femininity has no value unless they become more masculine_ like boys to gain some notion of a perceived power which they must attain. Although, from their perspective, intentions are good. However, their noble efforts have become radicalized ideology which is ripping deeper & deeper at the bottom of the foundation of our Nation and society (the traditional family). It seems the radicalist structure, leftist politicians, and feminist won't be satisfied until we find ourselves living in a bizarro world with the sexes switched completely upside down. I think that only the delusional individual could believe that a world with a society like that would be healthy and thriving?

It’s because feminist told women we’re better than men and therefore more privileged. So women believed it. Had women seen men as equals they would have learned from our experiences that having it all is a ridiculous pipe dream.

I already adore Joanna Williams work but I am now a super fan of Allison Wolf. Everything they said is on point. I was born in 1975 and have never known anything other than feminist wars, elitist victimology (and all the sickening rewards it reaps while exploiting and devouring others, even their own), lesbian separatist (different breed than lesbians in general) man hating, non conforming women hating, the petty is political feminism. This does not mean there were/are not a handful of feminists trying to combat it that I truly respect. There are but I have never called myself a feminist because of this. How can anyone in their right mind expect me to when the movement shattered, never to be put back together again, due to well off overbearing/authoritarian women seeking supremacy over everyone else 10 years before I was born? A tiny minority of hysterical, pampered and spoiled voices is all that’s ever heard or taken into account and they shit on everyone else while making our lives miserable.

The problem of gender discussions lies exemplary in the first sentence of this video description: "There has never been a better time to be a woman: girls outperform boys at every level in education...". What a cheer and what sign of gender equality! When girls/women outperform men in education, then there is no problem, on the contrary, it's "a big step forward to equality" (and more has to be done for women). Ultimately: Gender issues will never be solved, when only one side is heard. Women can complaint as much as they want, but when they don't listen to men and their issues, it is utterly useless. Women having problems/issues=men are the problem. Men having problems/issues=it's no problem, because men are their own problem and should be and act just like girls/women.

This is their definition of equality, when boys suffer. If you read some of the articles posted on feminist pages like The Guardian or Vice, you'll notice it is pure sexism and hatred for men. Somehow feminists can get away with insulting men but if men make one small joke on Twitter they lose their jobs. I hate these people and have avoided all women altogether now. If I'm walking down the street tomorrow and in the corner of my eye I see a woman getting raped I will keep on walking. No mercy or compassion left for womanhood anymore.

To be sure, it may be gospel truth that it's never been a better time to be a woman in this day and age. However, I would argue that life isn't supposed to be about being good for men or women, but rather should be good for men and women. The rhetoric espoused by feminism reaches outside feminism so that even those women that don't identify as feminists suffer collateral damage, often experiencing an inability to love, trust and respect as women once could, as if the things that are repeatedly drummed into our heads are having a social, emotional and mental erosive effect on humanity. This weakening of our hearts can only end badly for the species as a whole.

Debates such as this are incredibly timely, particularly as the above mentioned degeneracy is an absolute god send to a growing reactionary populist right movement. One suggestion; considering the enourmous impact of imaginative right-wing and far-right uses of alt-media platforms, would it not be worthwhile to package issues like those raised in a more graspable medium with a stratergy to significantly spread sensible arguments to as broad an audience as possible?

Bob Of Atlantis. You have a point! How does she propose to put a value on domestic duties? There are no qualifications to be a parent, no licensing, and no particular level of quality control. Consider, should someone that somewhat ignored her children get paid the same as one who smothers and coddles them? No one may dictate how a mother should raise their kids aside from clear abuse, there's no substantive and measurable right wrong too much or too little. This means the state would have to get involved to train and regulate childcare and women will ultimately need to get permission to procreate... Good luck convincing any woman to do that. Greater Good or not! Can you imagine having to go to classes before being allowed to be pregnant? Unenforceable. Furthermore, If there are financial incentives to being a parent, for raising children, it won't encourage men to be in the home. It will encourage even more single mothers than the current child support and welfare programs have already done. It will completely disregard the need for fathers, just their contribution to conception and taxation (& probably still child support), which will only increase the rapidly growing number of men who see more risk than benefit to any intimate relationship. It's not just about spreading money around "more evenly". Anyone who thinks it's that simple had far too little understanding of history & economics, and castes little to accommodate for human nature

I think its important to stop saying women when making these videos and discussions. Its every bit as important to identify and delineate feminists, and not lump them with most women. Most women do not hold these beliefs -- we are just inundated with this through the media because it sells ad space, its a good political tool, and most dangerous of all, toxic feminism is prevalent in the universities.

She raises some interesting points but I don't understand what is wrong with encouraging women and men to chastity before marriage? I know single women in their mid to late twenties who have slept with anything between 20 - 50 men... Who would want to marry a woman with such a past? How can a marriage have any form of trust when someone has a history changing sexual partners so often? And how can that be seen under any form of positive light? Surely chastity is a sign of self-respect, if nothing else?

Mostly, but it has also been adopted by simp men, who choose ignorance as a moral value. It’s forced on us all to accept narcissistic beliefs as an acceptable reality rather than fixable…similar to physical illness for the “sole” purpose of financial gain. The problem I see is that because feminism is championed by the majority in most media; adoptees tend to have quantifiable “privilege” in expression and behavior. This clout is of course nonexistent in the reality of those possessing less than a Billion ($/€/£) but can be inferred or adopted by narcissistic beliefs.

The number of women in tech decreased over the last 20-30 years, in part, because many were casualties of the last feminist gender quota war. It wasn’t truly their passion. It was someone else’s. I’m sure others left after the dotcom bubble burst. Some had children, their priorities changed and they realized they wanted to be at home with their child... because of life.
