Actually Liu Chunhong (CHN) outlifted everyone here and defended her gold medal in Athens, both 69kg and 75kg, with a +75 silver too (2nd place in +75 is 277kg) Cao Lei needs the 159kg lift for gold (only to beat the defending champ)

@FrogmortonHotchkiss I am definitely right about the unfairness. The best solution would simply be to have even heavier divisions than 99 (e.g. 75, 82, 90, 99, 109, 120, 131, +131 - because there are very few women over 131 and it is already a REALLY extreme weight for women). Likewise, men should have limited divisions e.g. 94, 105, 118, 133, 150 kg and then one unlimited +150. This adjustment would make the REAL stars (e.g. Tatiana Kashirina) shine even more.

Well, definitely, having more divisions would help everybody find their optimum shape. And you know what would be the ABSOLUTELY best thing? To find a PROPER formula for determining the value of any weightlifting performance, based on weight, height, gender, age, various body dimensions, etc. etc. etc. and then have a single World Champion based on that. But I understand that's quite tricky and people wouldn't like it. More medals mean more happy people... :-)

@FrogmortonHotchkiss Even if we ignored health and aesthetics (both of which would be seriously sick), the absolutely best female lifts are done by 98-133 kg "girls". Therefore, the weight divisions should continue WAY beyond 75 kg (e.g. ...69;75;82;90;99;+99). The current situation CLEARLY is that e.g. a 76 kg female weightlifter faces a HUGE unfair disadvantage compared to substantially heavier competitors.

@jakubkrcma That's not fat-weight though surely - the massive weights will be due to drug-enhanced muscle, with the excess fat possibly playing a role in covering it up. I think you're probably right about the unfairness, but I don't think aesthetics is a relevant concern.

@jakubkrcma I think sportsmen should just be best at the sport, surely? That's their aim, not to be role-models or pin-ups. Are you implying that Olha Korobka has an unfair advantage because she is very fat? I would have thought it would have more disadvantages than advantages - she has to lift kilos of her own excess bodyweight.

The very best female lifters are in these NORMAL divisions (classes), not +75. A sportsman should not be disgusting to look at (too fat) - like they are in +75. A sportsman should be a role model, an example of discipline, health, fair play, etc. The same applies to the heaviest male divisions, of course. BTW: Olha Korobka in +75 weighed 166.97 kg (368 lb)!!! That's just plain ridiculous... There should be a few heavier divisions than 75 and a CEILING around 109 kg (240 lb). A bit more for men.
